Wheatland Veterinary Hospital is excited to introduce our new Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Skinner.

Dr. Skinner was born and raised in a small town in California. From a very young age, she aspired to become a veterinarian. Growing up on a small farm, she raised and showed horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats. These FFA projects, combined with the interactions and guidance of local veterinarians, honed her animal husbandry knowledge and skills. This sparked her interest in animal care and desire to become a veterinarian.

After graduating high school, Dr. Skinner attended Fresno State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in animal science. During this time, she worked at a mixed animal veterinary practice, in addition to managing Fresno State’s school sheep herd. Her work experience not only helped prepare her for admission into veterinary school but also solidified her decision to become a veterinarian.

In 2017, Dr. Skinner was accepted into the Kansas State University College of Veterinary medicine and was excited to begin her journey to the Great Plains! During her time in veterinary school, she was a member of several college clubs, worked for the college’s large animal ICU, and assisted in several research projects. In 2021, Dr. Skinner achieved her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Since graduating, Dr. Skinner has practiced in Western Oklahoma and in Edmond before landing in Kingfisher with her husband and son. Dr. Skinner is excited to begin a new chapter as part of the Wheatland Veterinary Hospital team!

In light of the recent outbreak of Canine Influenza Virus in Oklahoma City and surrounding communities, Dr James Matousek would like to share his professional opinion with the clients of Wheatland Veterinary Hospital in Kingfisher, Oklahoma on the virus and the necessary precautions that need to be considered.

Canine Influenza, or dog flu, is caused by influenza type A virus that is specific to dogs and currently includes two infectious strains. Canine Influenza is highly contagious in confined populations of dogs and can also infect cats. It is not considered zoonotic and, therefore, cannot infect humans.

A mild form of Canine Influenza, involving a soft, moist cough or dry cough similar to kennel cough, is most commonly reported. In addition, clinical symptoms can include sneezing and nasal discharge. In more severe cases, pneumonia-like symptoms of high fever and respiratory distress have been observed. Although the majority of dogs recover without incident, in rare instances it can be fatal to dogs with other health complications.

It is important to remember that Canine Influenza cannot be diagnosed by clinical symptoms alone. Not all coughing dogs have been infected with Canine Influenza. Although, testing for Canine Influenza is performed at Veterinary Disease Diagnostic laboratories, the necessary sample collection and submission can be performed at Wheatland Veterinary Hospital.

Treatment for Canine Influenza should be left to the expertise of a veterinarian. A vaccine for Canine Influenza does exist, however, unfortunately, it is unavailable for shipment at this time. When the vaccine is available and obtained, Wheatland Veterinary Hospital will be prioritizing the administration of the vaccine to high risk patients first. When suitable supply of the vaccine is attainable, it will be available to all patients.

If your pet is exhibiting clinical symptoms of Canine Influenza and has recently been confined with other dogs known to be infected, you should seek the advice of your veterinarian.

Your Wheatland Veterinary Hospital, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma will consider all scientific and common-sense approaches to helping treat and prevent Canine Influenza for the welfare of its patients! We will be taking every precaution to minimize exposure of healthy dogs to Canine Influenza by safely scheduling appointments and monitoring entry into the building of dogs exhibiting Canine Influenza symptoms or have been in contact with another dog positive for Canine Influenza. Please contact on our office at 405-375-6099 if you have any questions or concerns!
