Had a fantastic training walk with our alumni on October 26th! Practicing leash manners and navigating distractions not only strengthens our dogs’ skills but also builds a stronger bond between the dog and owner. It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come and how much fun we have along the way.

Mr. Stan here likes to fly up the stairs at home, so during training we're making sure to show him a lot of structure regarding the stairs. We walk up them slow, we walk up them at a normal pace, we stop on them, we go up them, then back down, then back up. We stop at the bottom of the stairs, at the top of the stairs. We work on engagement before, during, and after! There's a lot to do to work on this!

📣 Guys, we have to talk about a myth. The myth that your puppy should be free roaming in the house without a leash or supervision.

This is very false! Your puppy should never be free roaming your house. Puppies are just that, puppies! No matter how much you train or what commands you teach, they're puppies. They're young and they're learning. Don't let them teach themselves the wrong thing.

You don't let your baby free roam your house on the floor, right? They sleep in a crib, right? They have designated spaces and constant supervision, right? We don't expect babies to know right from wrong for a long time, right? We don't allow babies access to things they shouldn't get into, right? So we need to do the same with our puppies.

Puppies need crate training, not just a secluded room, or a pen, they need a crate. A place to mentally shut off with no other options other than to mentally shut off. They need you on their leash anytime they're out of that crate. They need your guidance. They need to be rewarded for relaxing in the house. They need you to catch them the exact moment they try to steal a shoe. That way you can properly correct them in the moment, rather than 15 minutes later when the shoe is destroyed in the other room. They need to be corrected in the moment for what they do wrong to LEARN that it's wrong. They need you to show them how to just lay on the floor and know that is their only option sometimes. If they're not capable of that, they go in the crate. They need to learn that it can't be "go time" all the time. They need to be taught how to appropriately live in your home.

Miss Gwen went on her first official training assistant outing last week. Tony was working on his Service Dog training so Gwen tagged along as an official “distraction”. She has been working her whole life for this role. Haha. We did a little exploring before the assignment started. This was her first time seeing the ocean and seagulls. She rated it a 10/10.

This is what proper off leash training looks like!

Have you ever heard someone say that their dog can sort of be off leash sometimes in the woods as long as there is no distractions? Well, that's not true reliable off leash training! For starters, the dog must understand at least, sit, down, heel, come, and place on the leash while under distance, distraction, and duration. Then, off leash training consists of the proper use of the e-collar, meaning it is conditioned overtime with the dog's existing commands. Again, at the least, the dog must understand sit, down, heel, come, and place all under distance, distraction, and duration. If all of this sounds like it's a lot, it's because it is! This is a lot of hard work and dedication!

If you're looking to get this level of training with your dog, reach out! It makes photoshoots a lot easier! 😜📸

Here’s Jon’s bio!! We couldn’t drive this crazy train without him!

Meet Jon Powderly, the office man at A Dog’s World Unleashed. Jon started working at ADWU in 2021 and immediately became the Director of Administration. He decided to leave his old job in finance because he wanted something that would excite him and allow him to expand his skills in business. After a decent amount of persuasion from his father Dick Powderly, the owner of A Dog’s World Unleashed, Jon decided to join the team. Since then, Jon has become an integral member of ADWU. Jon manages customer relations, front office operations, financial and business operations, building maintenance, hiring and supervising office staff, and human resources. He wanted something different that would give him a lot to do…he surely got what he asked for!

One of Jon’s favorite parts about his job is being able to witness the relationships the staff build with the dogs. He sees how deeply the staff care for the dogs and how they treat them like their own. If anything, Jon feels as if A Dog’s World Unleashed has created a community that feels like a family. The relationships that have been built between the customers and the staff is something unique and amazing to be a part of.

Outside of work Jon’s passion is soccer. He coaches soccer and watches his kids play. His son plays for the varsity soccer team at Silver Lake High School, and his daughter is a Division 1 soccer student athlete attending Boston University. When he was in high school, he played soccer and has since passed the tradition to his kids who love it and were inspired by him to play. Additionally, Jon enjoys fishing, boating with his family, and tending his yard and his vegetable garden.
