Happy New Year’s from our crew to yours!!! This year we have had 100s of paws come and go through our various training programs. We thank you all for trusting in us and for continuing to follow through to give your dog the very best life that you can. After the year we had I don’t think any of us can say “I’ve never seen that before”. Yup we have seen it all. Keep up the good work…and if you don’t then come back for a refresher. 😁😘

PUPPIES!!!!!

It’s been a regular puppy palooza around here. Starting your pup off right with training can help avoid behavior issues from developing. We teach the pup about rules, structure and boundaries. The leash becomes your open line of communication to help you teach and guide your pup the proper way to behave in your home. Puppies are cute but they can also be land sharks. They can be frustrating. We teach you how to navigate this phase to create the dog you always wanted. The pics are a few examples of our newest batch of baby sharks. Some are small some are big. All are on their way to good manners. If you’re adding a pup to your family this winter come see us!

📣 Our next AKC CGC class info below!!! 📣

📣 We are holding our next American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen class! When and where? The first CGC class will be FRIDAY, January 10th at 5:30pm, and continue for the next 5 Fridays. Classes will be held at A Dog's World Unleashed Training Center. Class will be 5:30 to 6:30pm. We will have 5 spots open!
If you are not already clients of A Dog's World Unleashed, we will need your dog's vaccination records. The price will be $600 for 6 weeks. Payment and vaccinations can be taken the day of class #1. Please inquire to sign up.

What is CGC? It's a 6 week course that prepares you and your pup for the CGC test. We will prepare you for all 10 requirements and more. Upon completion of the classes, test day will be scheduled. If your dog passes the test, you will receive a certification from the AKC (American Kennel Club).

Lucky and Gwen had a few days off over Thanksgiving weekend so we “worked from home”. As trainers we have to let our dogs be our resume so we have to practice what we preach. Are they perfect? Nope, no dog is and that’s not a realistic goal. We can always make improvements with practice and consistency.

Lucky still struggles a bit in high activity areas like walking on a sidewalk with traffic whizzing by. We work commands to give her something to focus on and be rewarded for. She doesn’t have to love the situation but she does have to handle it. Flight used to be her go to. Now she knows she can look to me for guidance. She loves food and if she stays in an uncomfortable situation she gets paid very well. She now looks forward to going on adventures. She might still get spooked but thanks to the food reward the overall experience is positive for her.

Now let’s talk about Miss Gwen. She has a serious prey drive that’s starting to take over her ability to focus on anything else. I let that go way further than I should have because we are busy with work. Classic excuse that we as trainers hear all the time. Well now here we are and I have to go back to basics with her. I have to control her amount of freedom (crate and leash) and find ways for her to engage with ME. I have to be more interesting than Mr. Bunny. It’s a lot of work to add to the regular work day. Not what I wanted to do but I HAVE to do it now or we will have a real problem soon. She has caught and killed several rabbits so she knows she’s a good hunter.

Moral of the story…there are no excuses. We can all make some time during our busy lives to make sure we are giving our dogs what they need. Even if it’s just 5 minutes. We look for the quality of a lesson not quantity of time. So what are you going to do with YOUR dog today?

We will be spamming our own page with pictures! We have been busy bees working with a wide variety of issues lately. We have not been great about sharing pics. That will change today.

In this round of pics we feature Cody the Frenchie. He struggles with overstimulated anxious energy. He has figured out how to avoid things like getting his nails done or being examined by a vet with his bag of tricks. If he uses his teeth the uncomfortable things happen. During his training he had his nails done by our amazing groomer Joey Hutchins. Was he prefect? Nope. Did he get his nails done? Yup. Here’s his visit to Lowe's Home Improvement where he has to deal with being around stranger and noise. We use his obedience training to bring structure to and uncontrolled environment.

Tony and his mom/handler have been nailing it on their public access skills!!

As a service dog, it's important that Tony has body awareness when he's out in public. We don't want service dogs to be a bother to the public, in anyone's way, or sticking out in aisles. We've made sure that he understands where his body is, and how to tuck himself next to things, or even under things!

You can see that whenever his mom leaves him in a command to walk away, he's always against something or tucked under something so the public can easily move around.

Let's talk about fireworks 📣 If your dog does not have the genetics to be able to handle things like fireworks without training, you have to train it! Even in dogs with good genetics, you still may have to train for it! No, not all dogs need excessive training on this.🧨When I met Johnny, he really did not mind fireworks at all. Later on with him, I screwed up. I taught him to love fireworks, in a bad way. I let him chase Roman candles. So for a while, he got into high prey drive around them. With training, we slowly chip away at him being not being overstimulated around fireworks. When I met Karma, she was living in a kennel in AR. If anyone knows the south, you know that gunshots are everywhere. She was already desensitized to it. The sport that we compete in, has gunfire in it at every level. She hears noises like that, up close, twice a week. When I got Hazzard as a puppy, I made sure he was around things like gunfire, fireworks, and loud noises. He always "had a win" around them. High value and big rewards! I never even acted like the fireworks were happening. When we train for sport, he is also around gunfire twice a week. Some of it was genetics, and some of it was training with all 3 dogs. With working dogs, we are already working with high drive, stable, and confident dogs. Not all dogs are that. Not all dogs grew up around gunfire, or anything like that. For dogs that are not genetically not the most confident, did not grow up around gunfire/fireworks, and have no training history with gunfire/fireworks, it takes time! It takes a lot of consistency, time, and reps just like anything else ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️🧨 It is never too late to start working on training for fireworks! There's so many things we can do to work on this issues. This is a good time to do it to practice for next year! Charlie Girl came to us needing confidence, structure, and to help her with some reactivity with other dogs. But look at her today!
