TIGER HAVEN

TIGER HAVEN Tiger Haven is a Sanctuary and Rescue facility for big cats, much like an animal shelter for dogs and house cats - except that we are a "no kill" facility.

And, the cats that come here for sanctuary are given a permanent home. Thanks for your support!

Anya came to Tiger Haven in October of 2016 with her brother Ivan. They were born at an accredited zoo that breeds for many zoos around the country. Genetic diversity is essential for good breeding and since Anya and Ivan are siblings they were not a compatible breeding pair. After 10 months the breeder couldn't find a suitable mate for either cat. Rather than keep them, he decided to send them to Tiger Haven.

Anya and Ivan are Amur Leopards, a subspecies of Leopards. They are found only in southeastern Russia and northern China – rarely found – as they are critically endangered.

Anya is a very sweet and friendly girl. She will always come to greet her keepers when they stop by.

Since these Leopards were quite young when they arrived at Tiger Haven, we look forward to caring for them for many years.

Did you know big cats account for 2 out of the top ten most endangered animals in the WORLD?

The Amur Leopard and the Sundatran Tiger are in the top ten list, and although their populations have dwindled to less than 100 cats in the wild, conservationists are doing everything they can to bring them back.

A mother tiger loves her cubs fiercely. She will do anything to protect them and keep them safe.

Maybe the saying should be "mama-tiger" instead of "mama-bear".

All mothers have a little bit of tiger in them.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mama-tigers out there.

Big cats are beautiful creatures, but make no mistake, they are powerful and wild.

One of the most important things to remember is that wildlife should be respected.

Most big cats at Tiger Haven are friendly, but we still do not interact directly with them because we respect their space and strength.

All of our cats are given a home for the rest of their lives, where they can live comfortably and peacefully.

Talaja is a liger, which means she has the best of two worlds.
A liger is one half lion and the other half tiger.

Since Talaja’s father was a lion and her mother was a tiger, that makes her a liger. If her father had been a tiger and her mother a lion, she
would be called a tigon. Ligers typically are the color of lions
but have stripes like a tiger. Their looks and personalities vary
greatly because they possess traits of both big cats!

Ligers do not occur naturally because tigers and lions do not
exist in the same habitat. India is the only country in which li-
ons and tigers both live, however they are in different areas.
Ligers are usually bred as circus attractions and are rarely seen
in zoos.

Talaja came to Tiger Haven as a cub on September 2, 2002
when she was only 2 1/2 weeks old. She thoroughly enjoys her new tiger family and doesn’t have any idea that she is different from them in any way.

Meet Sparsh!

Sparsh arrived at Tiger Haven on April 23, 2012 when he
was just about 4 months old. He spent those first four months of his life working, as a picture-cub.

“Picture-cubs” are infants small enough to be safely handled by the public, who pay a fee to have their photo made with a tiger, lion, or other type of cub.

The sad thing is, after about 3 months, the cubs get too big for their jobs and can no longer be safely or legally handled by the public. At this point, they become disposable. Luckily for Sparsh, his owner knew of Tiger Haven and called to see if we had room. We agreed to take Sparsh and give him a permanent home.

It didn’t take long for Sparsh to become very comfortable here at Tiger Haven, he liked his new large enclosure and all the attention he received from the staff. Sparsh bears the scar of having lived his first 4 months in a pet carrier, as is the case with most “picture-cubs” you can see the rubbed spot just above his nose in the photos.

He LOVES swimming and playing in the pool with his toys!

Visit our website to learn more about cats just like Sparsh today.

The Tiger Haven Story

Roane County in rural East Tennessee is where you will find the tiger, lion, leopard, puma, snow leopard, jaguar and clouded leopard. In this unlikely setting you can hear the lions roaring their territorial songs at dusk, watch the tigers playing in the morning sun, and sometimes see cubs curled up asleep in their mother's gentle paws. Take a walk around the wooded enclosures and look closely. You may see a tiger's eyes peering at you above a rock, her ears flattened sideways like airplane wings so she won't be seen. Pretend you don't see her (usually you won't), and, in the time it takes to blink your eye, she will suddenly appear beside you at the fence. But only in play as she chuffs her friendly greetings to you.

Where did these majestic cats, the largest of all land predators, come from? And why Some were confiscated by authorities either because they were mistreated and abused, or because their owners could no longer take care of them.

Some are retired circus performers, some are surplus from zoos. Many were awaiting ex*****on because they couldn't stay where they were, and there was no other place to go.

There is a tale behind each cat (pun intended), but they all have a home now-with large, shady enclosures and pools for summertime playing, and where they can play with their friends, both feline and human.
