We hate to quill your vibe, but… porcupines can’t shoot their quills — no matter what cartoons told you.

Their quills are just modified hairs that detach easily if a predator (or unlucky dog) gets too close.

So if you see a porcupine, don’t panic — it’s not loading ammo. It just wants to snack on tree bark and slowly (but pointedly) go about its business.

Do you know what animal is the main predator of porcupines in Massachusetts? 👇 Share your guess in the comments!

UPDATE: OWNER FOUND. THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

Do you know me? I was found wandering on Rt. 106 Kingston in the area of Hawthorne Road and West Street approx. 6:30 PM. A good Samaritan took me in and contacted Animal Control. I am in their good hands now safe and sound in a warm bed. If you have any information about me, please contact Kingston Animal Control/Shelter 781-585-0529. I do have a microchip, however it is not registered, so I'm hoping my humans see this post. Please note she is a Sr. dog with a possible neurological condition.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION:

Introducing Ginger! Ginger is a 3 year old mixed breed. Her paperwork says terrier mix but our best guess is maybe a black mouth cur or beagle mix. Ginger was described as "perfect" by her previous owner who due to his own health issues had to surrender her to us. She is playful and energetic and just wants a lap to sit on and a face to smother in kisses. Ginger has amazing recall to whistling as you can see in the video. She is intelligent and curious and did we mention adorable? She's never been around kids and will require a meet & greet if you already own a dog. Ginger is spayed, current with vaccines and looking for her best friend. To apply for Ginger, find her on Petfinder or find the application on our page. Thanks for looking.

As the days get shorter and colder, it is not uncommon to see nocturnal animals out during the day. They are busy gathering resources in order to survive the winter. It is always a good practice to keep your distance from wildlife and to call a licensed rehabilitator or animal control officer if you have concerns that an animal may be sick or injured.

About Us

Kingston Animal Shelter provides temporary housing for lost, stray, or abandoned cats and dogs in our community until they find their way home by reuniting with their owners or adoption! The shelter is given a small operating budget from the town for heat and electricity but all other care is possible through donations and volunteering. The whole shelter, our Wet Nose Pet Food Bank, and the animals that stay inside depend on donations for food, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, cat litter, vet care, etc. along with the time and tender care of hardworking volunteers for survival. The shelter has received countless donations from the community, which is how we are able to save the helpless pets we house. The shelter animals are so grateful for the generosity that the Town of Kingston’s community continues to show them! The Kingston Animal Control team works out of the Kingston Animal Shelter and includes two part-time Animal Control Officers: Joanna “Jo” Boudreau and Meghan E. Wrightington. The Town of Kingston also has the Animal Inspector: Debra J. Mueller who handles barn inspections and animal quarantines. The shelter and animal care is also maintained by so many wonderful volunteers, for without their dedication, the shelter would not be so accommodating.
