Marjorie is ready for her new home!!

Marjorie is looking to be around 15 years old.
She stands tied, stands for the farrier.
Loves to be groomed and does well for fly spray and baths.
Stays fat off air.
Leads and loads.
Loves attention.
Super sweet.

Marjorie has a pretty obvious roach back. She will be a pasture puff and not sound for riding or driving.

Tucker is ready for his new home!!

Tucker looks to be around 12/14 years old.
Stays fat off air.
Stands tied.
Leads and loads.
Definitely not a lover and tends to be more stand offish.
May need some reminders about the farrier. Certainly more of a project.

But the longer he stays more the training he gets and the more his dollar signs will go up.

FROM A PARENT:
One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to ride horses?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my kids to ride horses.

So, if I am not paying for them to ride, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go to the barn but go anyway.

- I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body.

- I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates.

- I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that score they'd hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading.

- I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

- I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships.

- I pay so that my kids can be in the arena instead of in front of a screen...
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for horse riding, I pay for the opportunities that horse riding provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!

Little Pedro is doing so good!!!

He got his first bath and learned to load in the trailer yesterday.

Here he is learning how to load and unload from the trailer.

When we picked him up it took 3 of us and a butt rope to get him in. And he jumped out when we unloaded him. Now he is walking in and out like a gentleman.

These 2 will be available soon!!

First they need to gain some weight and remember their manners to be good citizens. After that they will be available for their new barn.

The one with the halter on is Marjorie.
The one without a halter still needs a boy. He is a super sweet boy.

So did anyone lose a rooster?
🤣 this rooster has given Kayla quite the laughs today. He has went with her everywhere. He is definitely not ours and was first seen no where near the barn but by the road.

This weekend has been super busy for us!

On top of lessons and training we took in another rescue.

Meet Pedro!! He is around 4 years old. And 13 hands tall. He won’t get much bigger than this.

He will be gelded in the fall (when flies aren’t so bad) and this gives him a chance to get some handling and manners under his belt before this happens.

So far he is super SWEET and loving! He is very personable but not invading in your space.

Within one day he is already picking up all 4 of his feet and leading around.

We are so looking forward to what Pedro can become.

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

Last day at camp.
While we painted horses with washable non toxic paint we learned body parts. We painted this saddle to identify parts too.
Then of course we had to give the horses a bath and try out the water slide on the pond.

Update on Shovel!!

Shovel is an 8 year old bay mustang mare.

Shovel has really progressed so fast.

She stands for grooming, fly spray, and picks up her front hooves. She stands for saddling as well.

Today I decided to girth/cinch up the western saddle in her. And she did WONDERFUL! Not a single buck.

Shovel is a-vail-able to an approved home with experienced person to further her training.

Here is an update on Flower. She is the chestnut 10 year old mustang mare.

She has zoomed in her training! I also think she will make such a nice English going horse.

Last night she got a bath 🧼 with shampoo, conditioner for her mane.

She leading great. Catching has become easier for her. She is starting to want to walk up to me instead of walk away.

Touching her legs is still very scary for her.

She has gained probably 125 pounds. With 125 more to go she won’t be rode for a while. Plus she just isn’t there mentally yet.

Flower is a-vail-able to someone knowledgeable with mustangs. Mid x x x to approved barn

Title verification in hand.

Day 2 and our final day at English camp!!

Todays craft we left the horses be the artist.

I’m certain everyone made it to their goals. They worked on gaining confidence at the canter, taller jumps and even went over a small oxer (wide jump)!

We ended today with a little swim in the pond to test out the water slide!!

Now on to the next camp!

Our camp craft today was painting this old saddle and learning our saddle parts.

Ethan named the 2 mustangs. This one is Flower.

She is 10 years old and the slowest to trust. But man I really feel like once she trusts she is going to give her all!
She has been a full 30 days. When she got here she didn’t want to be touched, petted, loved on. She just wanted you to leave her alone with her food.

Just this morning, she walked up to me for the first time. She asked to be caught, to be loved on.

And just her short time here she has learned to lead back-and-forth from her turnout to her stall, some grooming, walk and trot on a lunge line and most importantly just to be around people

When you are good enough that you get the tour.
We managed to get to the front gate with little problem. So I figured we would call it a day. She is not a fan of grooming yet. But she will be soon. She has gained probably 125lbs in the last 3 weeks. She still about 150lbs to go.

Our Story

KO Stables was established in 2015. However that does not mean that is only how long we have been riding and training horses for. Kayla started riding just when she was 5 years old. She rode english, western and ba****ck. She started out riding quarter horses, paints and thoroughbreds. Kayla learnt to jump when she was 9 years old. She also competed in local shows. She got her first horse in 2000 as her Christmas present. What a dream! She was a sorrel quarter horse named Perfect. Perfect like her rider did just a little bit of everything. Kayla then made the move to Tennessee Walking Horses and she fell in love with the breed. Her second horse was a black TWH by the name of Titan. Although, he was a gaited horse; she also jumped with him. Kayla was always the oddball at the barn. Everyone else rode english while she rode western. She ended up losing Titan in 2004 and stepped out of horses for a couple of years. She continued to ride with a friend at some local trail riding places. She was able to get back into horses full time in the year of 2006. She made her way back to quarter horses. Kayla was able to take on a working position for a well known trainer for her lessons. Kayla ended up falling in love with competitive trail and hunter under saddle as well as well barrels, poles and western pleasure. This is where Kayla also developed a passion for teaching other riders and individuals how to ride and work with horses. Kayla has developed her own unique style of teaching that helps children overcome their nervousness, where they learn about safety, how horses think and react, and how to ride. She incorporates some fun sayings to help the rider envision what they are doing incorrectly so they can improve their riding to help them get their horse to do what is being asked. She loves to teach as much as she loves to ride and train.
