Gun Dog’s Breed of the Month is The German Shorthaired Pointer.

Many opinions exist regarding the actual origins and ancestry of the GSP, but most historians agree that the breed development was started by a cross between the old Spanish pointer and traditional continental pointers. German hunters decided to then further cross the breed with tracking hounds to further enhance scenting ability and to soften the temperament of the emerging breed.

During the 1860’s, another cross was made with the English pointer to improve the speed, style, looks and pointing instincts of the breed. The end product of all these efforts was a sleek, good-looking, intelligent, loyal and versatile gun dog with incredible stamina, an acute sense of smell, a highly developed pointing instinct, and an eagerness to retrieve fallen game either on land or in water.

A breed that is now loved and celebrated as one of the most popular gun dogs in North America.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Max here! Look mom and dad no more leash! Any who, it’s kind of bitter sweet because Deep Root Kennels and trainer Joe are pretty amazing, but I’m super excited to leave spring training camp tomorrow in the best shape of my life to go back home and show my family that I am a changed dog. Although I will need training the rest of my life to stay fit mentally and physically, I now possess the skills to be a well behaved companion wherever our adventures take us. To trainer Joe, I would like to say you were fair but firm and I respect that, hopefully we will meet again on the trail my friend. Lauren Tedesco

Happy Tuesday everyone, Max here at Deep Root Kennels. Trainer Joe isn’t understanding that I am not a morning dog. These 6:00am trainings are for the birds even though they do make my day a bit easier. I am almost ready to go home later in the week. This morning I am learning the difference between down and sit. It can be a little confusing at times but I’m starting to get it. Lauren Tedesco

Happy Sunday. Max here reporting from Deep Root Kennels. This morning after our obedience session, trainer Joe introduced me to the atv and as my reward for doing such a great job this morning, he took me on a little excursion to the corn field. I had so much fun with all the different smells. Now I’m ready for my Sunday nap. Lauren Tedesco

Happy Saturday everyone, Max here! Today has been exactly one week with trainer Joe and I have learned so much. I even got to show off my new skills to my family on Thursday. This morning to my surprise we had snow, boy oh boy do I love the snow!!! Trainer Joe and I are continuing to progress in my training daily. This morning we are working sit/stay, recall, and my finish out to about 100 yards. It’s a lot of running but so much fun at the same time. Lauren Tedesco

Max here! Just getting my morning training session in with trainer Joe. We are making progress in our training and I’m learning so much. It’s a beautiful morning to be outside.

Hi Max here! Today Trainer Joe taught me heel, sit/stay and recall. I wanted to check to see if he was for real with all this stuff, so to mess with him a bit I thought it would be funny to go down when he told me to sit. Since Trainer Joe is such a neat guy I figured I would listen eventually and not give him too much of a hard time. Lauren Tedesco

Hi my name is Max. I moseyed on over to Deep Root Kennels this morning for a few weeks of obedience school. My first day was challenging with all these new rules and expectations, the pictures pretty much some up my day. I’m getting to know trainer Joe a bit today and he seems like a pretty cool dude. I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can from him during my stay. Lauren Tedesco

I get the question all the time at what age should you spay/neuter your dog. Below is a nice research article to help make an educated decision.

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2020.00388/full

Neutering (including spaying) of male and female dogs in the first year after birth has become routine in the U.S. and much of Europe, but recent research reveals that for some dog breeds, neutering may be associated with increased risks of debilitating joint disorders and some cancers, complicating...

Hi my name is Waffles, aka (Waffles Texas Ranger). My family dropped me off for obedience school today at Deep Root Kennels for two weeks so that I can learn how to be the amazing dog everyone knows I can be. Joe the trainer has already taught me so much in my first class, i know how to sit at doors, sit on command, walk on lead without pulling, and how to stay on this super comfy bed my parents got for me called place. I’m not great at all these things yet but give me a break it’s my first day. Sandra Lovejoy Hupertz

It’s bitter sweet that Athyna went home today, her big sis Nykita came to visit for a group training before heading home. Both girls will be missed, it has been a lot of fun training both of these remarkable dogs. I look forward to hear about all their future adventures. Ashleigh Willison-cale

Winter Storm! A day off work! Training a Husky! No problem! A little snowshoe adventure today with Athyna to the back of the property. I think Athyna is wise beyond her years and was kind enough to allow me to make the path the entire way. Ashleigh Willison-cale

Athyna and I using the snow mounds to play hide n seek! The game of hide n seek is great to work on sit/stay, down/stay, being out of sight, working recall and having some fun all at the same time. Wait for it! Ashleigh Willison-cale

Training Doesn’t Always Go As Planned

By Allan Klotsche, Wildrose Midwest

So often in magazines and online training forums we read about the perfect dog who does everything exactly how he is supposed to. But, in reality, this is not always the case with training. Many times our dogs will not be able to successfully complete the task we set out for them. When our dogs struggle like this, we have a very important training philosophy – SIMPLIFY. Rather than losing our temper and getting upset at the dog, we aim to help the dog achieve success by simplifying the drill. The more they struggle, the more we simplify – often times going back to some basic skill that we know they understand and build back from there.

For instance, if we are working on marking drills and the dog cannot find the original thrown mark, our helper who threw the original mark, will throw another mark when the dog is in the right area and guaranteed to see it. Once the dog picks up the bumper (it doesn’t know he failed to get the original one), the dog is then recalled back to their owner and feels good that he has completed the retrieve. What this sequence does for the dog is gives him a sense of confidence that he can complete this again. Immediately, we will run this marking drill again with the helper throwing the original mark back to the exact location where the dog just picked that retrieve. As the dog is now sent for the mark he will likely return to the area where he had previous success.

Another example would be a dog that breaks down short of the intended target perhaps due to changing terrain. Rather than let the dog run around pointlessly and “accidentally” finding the bumper, we will recall the dog back to us, walk 1/2 way up to the bumper and resend him. If this simplification works, great. If not, we shorten it again. Once the dog successfully completes the retrieve from whatever distance, drop the bumper back in the same location and extend the distance back to the original location, or at least part way there.

Before we start our training, we always have a Plan B in mind in case things don’t go as we intended. Don’t let yourself or your dog get frustrated by making things more difficult than you are confident your canine can handle.
