Samuel is so photogenic!
βΌοΈThat concludes 2024 kidding! βΌοΈ
Back in February, we thought Shirley (also known as Penny) was pregnant. We even had an ultrasound and were told she was bred! We had planned for late April babies π
Then, our standard size Lamancha buck jumped the fence and got to her. Much to our surprise, she was in fact in heat.
Shirley is a mini-nubian, which means she is about 50% Nigerian dwarf and 50% Nubian. So she is slightly smaller than a standard goat, but much larger than our Nigerians. For her to deliver kids from a standard size buck, could be difficult.
Today she delivered a single huge buckling! He was 8.2 lbs, about 3 lbs larger than her biggest kid last year.
Samuel, as we are calling him, is 27% Nubian, 23% Nigerian, and 50% Lamancha. He comes from some pretty great dairy lines, though he is from two different breeds so he will not be registerable! π Both parents registration is pictured.
Thanking God for a safe delivery, and mama did such a good job!

A major solar field is under construction about 10 minutes away from us. It's an ugly sight to see approaching the large city near us.
I have many things I could say about that, but instead I'd like to vent about the impact this has on a small farm.
Our power company has had 4 outages so far in June, which has completely destroyed our small egg operation. 82 chicks, supposed to be hatching this week, are lifeless and I'm left to deal with that and the impacts to our customers.
The power company assumes no responsibility. I'm not surprised. I'm thankful they are doing all they can, but as a paying customer who pays the electric bill on time, I don't appreciate a setback like this that costs our farm a large amount of money.
I apologize to all who ordered chicks for June. I will get your chicks to you, and I so appreciate your patience through this rough month!

Stalls are cleaned out, which means summer kidding and fall breeding are just around the corner!
We have 2 does to kid this summer, in early July, and have 10 pairings planned for our January 2025 kidding! π
We just made this beautiful little wildflower area this year and it's coming along so nicely πΏ πΊ
These ladies were confirmed pregnant with blood work yesterday!
Both of these girls have fooled me in the past, so I wanted confirmation, as they will be due in July while we have lots of events and traveling happening!
We are so excited!
Shirley's babies will be mini-nubian/Lamancha with excellent milk lines behind them, and Stella's babies will be AGS registered Nigerian dwarfs (out of Reese).
Kids from Shirley and Stella will be available - message me for reservations!
My sweet girls!
Disbudding and pregnancy check day! π
This sweet little guy comes home to us today! π

π£ π£ π£ LAST CALL for Icelandic chicks for the year! We are finishing up our final round of incubation this week and next week.
β β β UPDATE: we have hatched 87 of these amazing birds for 2024, towards our goal of 100!
Icelandic chickens are a rare breed of chickens originating from Iceland. They are considered "threatened", nearing endangered.
This breed of chickens is incredibly hardy. They do very well in cold winters, and they also are very smart - they have great instincts against predators so they do well to free-range. As free-range chickens, they are efficient to forage on their own so they are an economical breed to have.
As a family, we have an annual goal of introducing 100 of these threatened/endangered chicks into the world. I'm finally catching up on our wait list for chicks - and have room to take more orders for end of May/beginning of June. Please let me know if you'd like to order some of these incredible chicks!

These are called Icelandic chickens. Icelandics are a rare breed of chickens, as they are considered "threatened", nearly endangered. They originate from Iceland, of course, and trace back to at least the 9th century.
They are cold-hardy, have a long egg-laying life and lay well over the winter. They are also known for their excellent foraging abilities and they do well to free-range., making them very economical and sufficient. In my experience, these chickens are very intelligent and are very resistant to predators, despite their love for free-ranging.
$4 each or $40/dozen.
Delivery available throughout Iowa and Northern and central Missouri on select dates, and availability on my Spring reservation list.
Babydoll lambs are the sweetest! π
Just look at that face π
Charcoal Tea Tree bars are restocked!
These are an excellent facial bar - charcoal is a gentle exfoliant and tea tree cleanses pores, with the addition of goat milk to moisturize. β€οΈ
No artificial colorants or fragrances so you can feel good about what you nourish your skin with!
This is colored simply with charcoal and rose clay powder for a pretty swirl and some added pore cleansing.
$6/bar

As of now, we have 46 chickens. We recently sold a handful, and lost a few to a feisty fox, prior to getting our curious, poultry-loving, training-in-progress livestock guardian dog. 3 of our chickens are true free-rangers, who never set foot in this coop, while the other 43 free-range during daylight hours and then retreat to their big ol' red house. We have a variety of breeds - brahmas, americaunas, polish, silkies, partridge chantecleres, welsummers, calico princesses, and newly hatched Icelandics - which are about 6 or 7 weeks old. Of the icelandics we hatched, we have 3 cockarels and 6 pullets (yay!!!). Icelandics are something I'm super excited about. They are a rare breed, I believe they are defined as threatened, though there are lots of breeders starting up in America. These chickens are incredibly hardy, having originated from Iceland. They can also survive almost entirely without feed as they are fantastic foragers. We hope to offer hatching eggs and chicks in the future! β Pictured at the end: Duchess, our only remaining purebred silkie hen β€οΈ
