Noble Hill Rescue, Inc.

Noble Hill Rescue, Inc. We are always looking for forever homes for our adoptable horses. Nice horses are available for all levels of experience.

We also have many horses who will find sanctuary here. Love horses but don't have time or space for them-consider sponsoring one! Most of the horses have had a career of being on the road, however we have Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, Quarter horses, Morgans, and Thoroughbreds (and sometimes Haflingers). All the horses are sweet, gentle animals without vices like kicking or biting. Some are well trai

ned and some need some training. Most make great horses for kids that can ride or older folks that still want to!

Happy arrival anniversary, Blaze! This gorgeous boy is a Morgan Mustang cross who came to us last year after a leg injury ended his buggy career. He is the perfect patient for the extra care he needs, allowing you to work on him with great manners and patience! It's hard to believe that Blaze has only been with us for one year as his friendly, curious personality makes it seem like we've known him for much longer.

I am borrowing these words from a man that speaks to the very heart of horsemanship.

“I need to know my job, what I'm trying to teach, and you don’t learn that overnight. It takes a lifetime to learn how to live a lifetime. I see young people that are around horses for four or five years, and they know it all. They haven’t even scratched the surface. It’s amazing what a horse will get done in spite of them, and if he didn’t fill in, we wouldn’t get much done with horses. It’s amazing what the horse will do for us if we treat him like he’s one of us." - Ray Hunt

Ray's quote is taken from an article 'Words of Wisdom from Ray Hunt' by EHC which appeared in the 'Eclectic Horseman' issue #16, April 2004.

"Friedrich Nietzsche was the protagonist of one of the most moval episodes in the history of Western thinkers.

It was 1889 and the philosopher lived in a house in via Carlo Alberto, in Turin. One morning, as he headed to the city centre, he found himself faced with a scene that changed his life forever.

He saw a coachman hitting his horse hard, exhausted and unable to continue. The animal was completely exhausted, with no more strength to move forward. However, the man continued to whip him to force him to move despite the obvious fatigue.

Nietzsche was shocked by what was happening. He quickly approached and, after scolding the coachman for his behaviour, he hugged the horse now on the ground and began to cry. Witnesses say that he whispered a few words in his ear, words that no one could hear. According to legend, the philosopher's last words were: "Mother, I'm stupid".
After that moment, Nietzsche fell to the ground unconscious and his mind collapsed. He didn't speak for the next ten years, until his death. He never managed to resume his rational life after that episode. The police were notified and the philosopher was arrested for disturbing public order. Shortly after, he was taken to a sanatorium.

The society of the time considered Nietzsche's gesture — hugging the mistreated horse and crying with him — as a manifestation of his madness. Although many still see the episode today as the result of his mental illness, there are also deeper and more conscious interpretations.

The writer Milan Kundera, in his novel The Unsustainable Lightness of Being, takes up the episode of Nietzsche and interprets it as a request for forgiveness. According to Kundera, Nietzsche apologised to the horse on behalf of all humanity, for the cruelty with which we treat other living beings, for having transformed ourselves into their executioners and having subjected them to our service.

Nietzsche was not known for a particular interest in the animal world or for an environmental sensitivity, but undoubtedly the episode of mistreatment had a huge impact on him. That horse was the last being with whom he established real and emotional contact. He did not identify so much with the animal itself, as with his pain, finding a bond that transcended the immediate. It was an identification with life.

Today more and more people, both inside and outside the scientific field, recognise how aberrant animal abuse is."
