Sterling crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday.

In September, we welcomed Sterling, a beautiful old trail horse with a lifetime of stories behind him. He was surrendered to us by his owner.

After multiple consults with the vet over the last few months, it became clear that his underlying health issues were too serious to overcome.

Before saying goodbye, Sterling enjoyed a feast fit for a king—a warm mash with apples, carrots— and one last sunset surrounded by care and gratitude of those who love him. Sometimes the greatest rescue of all for these senior animals is being sent off with dignity. Please enjoy his last moments with us in the video below.

Rescue work is never easy, but it’s a privilege to give these animals a safe, loving place to recover, and to ensure their final moments are filled with peace and comfort. Run free, Sterling—you’ll always be in our hearts. ❤️🐴

Adoption Pending: Billy

Today, we are celebrating Billy, a 16-year-old Quarter Horse, as he heads off to his new home!

Billy came to us when his previous owner had to surrender him due to changing circumstances. After a bit of a training tune-up, Billy is ready to shine in his new role as a trusty trail horse.

We’re thrilled to see him embark on this next chapter, bringing joy and companionship to his adopter. Wishing Billy and his new family many happy trails ahead! 💕

We are thrilled to finally be able to share the inspiring story of Johnny Walker, a Tennessee Walker who has overcome incredible adversity and is now on the path to his forever home! Due to legal restrictions and our fight for custody, we haven't been able to post or share anything about this special horse since his arrival with us in June 2023. We are so excited to share Johnny's story with you now:

RCER got the call from Cle Elum animal control regarding a horse that had been forced to live in a horse trailer for several days with no food or water in extremely hot weather. Authorities seized the horse and arrested the owner on animal cruelty charges. We took the horse right away, and that's where Johnny's story with us begins.

🦄 Physical Rehabilitation: When Johnny arrived in June 2023, he was in dire condition—underweight, dehydrated, and fearful of his surroundings. He struggled to walk due to the muscle atrophy and needed constant rest. Thanks to dedicated care, within just a few weeks, Johnny began to regain his strength. By October, he had gained about 100 pounds, reaching a healthy 1157 pounds, and by November 1, he reached 1250+ pounds! His recovery was fueled by a nutritious diet and a lot of love.
🧠 Mental Rehabilitation: Johnny’s mental journey has been just as significant. Initially unsure how to behave like a horse, he slowly learned to embrace his freedom. With the introduction of a pasture mate in August, Johnny began to thrive, gaining confidence and enjoying normal horse behaviors like grooming and playing. This companionship has been crucial for his emotional recovery.
Johnny’s remarkable recovery highlights the importance of proper care and rehabilitation for animals who have suffered abuse. We are proud to announce that he has a pending adoption!

Thank you to all who donate to RCER. It is your donations that help make our work behind the scenes like this so successful and helps us to continue our mission to fight against animal cruelty. Together, we can ensure that stories like Johnny’s have happy endings!

We appreciate Central Washington Equine Hospital's swift response in caring for our newest addition, Sterling.

Sterling, a senior quarter horse, is in need of rehabilitation and a forever home. The vet staff all loved this old man and his resilient spirit. He is at his new foster home where he will be on a vet prescribed nutrition plan in order to get his weight back where it needs to be.

Thanks to our volunteers' efforts and donors' contributions, Sterling is able to receive this essential medical care.

In order to support Sterlings recovery, please visit our website at rodeocityequine.com or via PayPal @ RodeoCityEquineRescue.

Also, a reminder that this Saturday we will be hosting a used horse blanket sale at the New Life Church in Kittitas from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will go to helping horses like Sterling.

Rambler (New name Pepe) Adopted. This young fellow knew he found his forever home last evening. He came to RCER as an abandoned c**t who was scared and worried if supper was a daily deal. And add a halter into the mix as a daily occurrence. Yesterday, he timidly lead up to a trailer, looked it over a bit and walked right in. Thanks to Paul and Jenny for providing him🥰 his new digs.

Sometimes, rescue isn't always a happy ending. We were only able to offer this horse a final act of kindness. Animal control agencies rely on people calling in and reporting potential animal neglect. We always encourage those who call us to contact their local authorities if they are suspicious of potential animal neglect.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers who rushed to try and save this horse.

A severely neglected horse was euthanized this past week and Deputies are seeking animal cruelty charges against its owner.

On Wednesday, June 19, Deputies learned that the landlord had been corralling the 20-to-25-year-old gelding on the property in the 13000 block of Road 10-Northeast north of Moses Lake. Deputies could see that the horse was in bad shape, noting in the report that the spine was protruding, ribs were visible, hips were noticeably sunken, hooves had not been trimmed in some time, hair was falling out and the horse was suffering from pest damage. The horse’s water source was filled with algae, and there was no readily accessible food supply.

Based on the evidence, Deputies determined that the horse was starved, dehydrated, and exposed to excessive heat leading to unjustifiable suffering. Deputies were granted a warrant to seize the horse and returned to the property on Thursday, June 20 accompanied by staff from Rodeo City Equine Rescue from Ellensburg.

While loading the horse into a trailer, the horse collapsed. The horse was transported to a local veterinarian where an examination led the vet to conclude the horse had been neglected for at least a year. Since the horse was so malnourished and unable to support its own weight, the horse was euthanized.

Deputies have forwarded to the Grant County Prosecuting Attorney a recommendation of a charge of first-degree animal cruelty against the horse’s owner. First-degree animal cruelty is a Class C felony. Among other possible penalties imposed by the court, if convicted, the owner could be permanently prohibited from owning, caring for, possessing, or residing with any animals.

LOVING HORSES; When doing rescue work sometimes you see things that break your heart, sometimes it is something you can fix and sometimes it is something you that brings tears of joy. This is one of those we can fix and find a wonderful person to give this animal a home. This is Babs in 2011 when RCER took her in and the second pic is now. Babs is 28 years old and still doing well, thanks to Wanda, her wonderful mom and caregiver.
