Saturday, June 29th, we had the pleasure to provide our annual low-cost vaccine clinic. We gave free exams & rabies. We also provided discounted core vaccines and microchips for pets. Dr Shaw and fellows have been part of a yearly vaccine clinic for over 15 years now and we want to ensure that it continues so that the animals of Klamath County can stay happy and healthy 8).

We want to give a giant THANK YOU to everyone who attended, braving the heat and ensuring their beloved pets received examinations and vaccinations. We know it’s a long day and hope that your fur friends are better for it.

Remember to get your dogs licensed this week, if you can. Animal Control is waiving late fees between July 1st to the 5th.

We’d like to give a SHOUT OUT to all of our volunteers for their time and dedication to helping the pets of Klamath County: Heather, Caitlin, Mary, Whysper, Allison, Jon, Kalea, Leah, Becca, Christine, Alicia, Shawn, Samantha, Jaime, Ray, and Ryan. We couldn’t pull off a vaccine clinic like this without all of you who are committed to helping us provide exceptional care to pets in our community.

Our SPECIAL THANKS to Pet Medical, South 6th Veterinary Clinic, Hullman’s Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Samantha Wilson, Elanco Vet Supply and Take A Hike Dog Walkers for donating their time and supplies. Businesses like this, giving to our community, make it so that we can continue providing this service yearly.

Dr. Shaw and our crews were able to examine 203 pets, implant 41 microchips, and give 159 free Rabies vaccines, 76 Bordetella, 88 Distemper/Parvo combos, 28 FVRCP, 72 Leptospirosis and 26 Leukemia vaccines.

Here’s to making it happen for many years to come! May you all have a great summer and an enjoyable upcoming holiday.

Is mounting or hu***ng a sign of dominance in dogs?

Hu***ng or mounting is a fixed action pattern (FAP), which are innate behaviours. These are behaviours that are common to all members of a species and require no learning. A Fixed Action Pattern (FAP) is a predictable series and stereotypical sequences of complex actions triggered by a cue - www.simplypsychology.org. www.sciencedirect.com.

Hu***ng or mounting is NOT:
Dominance
Controlling you or another dog
Alpha behaviour
Only seen in unsterilised dogs
Only seen in males
Only seen in younger dogs
To cause you embarrassment
To get your attention or get back at you

Hu***ng or mounting by male or female dogs of any age CAN be due to:
Excitement
Sexual rehearsal
Burning off pent up energy
General stimulation...yippee, something’s happening!
Stress/Anxiety/Displacement behaviour
Play
Hyperarousal
A medical issue
Boredom
Frustration
Burning of excessive energy (like zoomies)
Ambivalence about a situation or a dog
Unease
Tiredness

If you are worried:
Make a note of how many times a day this is happening.
Take your dog for a medical check up.
Contact a up to date science-based behaviour consultant to identify the triggers and the emotions to be able to develope a modification plan to improve the emotional state and hence the behaviour.
What to do in the moment - if the dog underneath seems uncomfortable and stressed then please interrupt. It may mean that the 'top dog' is unable to read the body language of the other one. Rather redirect that energy to a toy or chew as opposed to saying off. Give him something mentally stimulating to do instead. If they are having turns and alternating this behaviour with other behaviours like chasing, tumbling, play bows, etc., then leave them be.
Be careful of your dog doing it to random dogs in a park that he does not know. The unknown dog could become aggressive due to not wanting the behaviour.

Note - many Google searches for this behaviour will bring up the word dominance. The behaviour is not due to such a simplistic, misunderstood term. Dogs do it to pillows, toys or furniture - do you think that they are trying to dominate those inanimate objects? Every dog is an individual with unique emotions. The feelings and motivations for the behaviour will differ from dog to dog but it is certainly not about dominance. Don't believe everything you read on Google and check your trainer's/behaviourist's credentials. Let's not label every behaviour beyond our understanding as dominant 🙂

Most guardians rush to sterilize their dogs when this happens...it may not make a difference.

While working the we had the privilege to meet a fire survivor who unfortunately lost everything - even his animals. While trying to find his cats and be of use, with not having a home to go to, he was helping set out traps and recover any animals he could. He did end up finding one of his cats. She had been burnt over by this hot fast moving raging forest fire that had already claimed countless lives of pets and wildlife. He knew, because he had spoken to us about other cats, that he could bring her to us for care. He continued to set traps and go about helping find any other surviving animals and ended up bringing us three more. We honestly weren’t sure, at first, if she really was his cat, but he came in a few days later to check on her and not only did he tell us that she was his cat, but she told us. She turned into a completely different cat when she heard his voice. A new life was ignited between the two of them. He got down on the floor in front of her kennel and was careful of where not to touch. And he spoke to her. Not only was he a much happier man with a fresh breath of hope, but she became more animated and talkative and started fighting harder for him and us. She was badly burned, but she was showing signs of improvement.

Even though he had lost everything, even though he would end up burying all of his own cats, he was showing up for her. He made an appointment every day just about to see her, to talk to her and hold her. She responded by meowing back and telling him about her day. He almost always left in tears, but he and we were hopeful that his grand love of her would see her through the hard days. We really believed, even with as badly as she was burned that she just might pull through. This week though she needed our oxygen chamber. Her owner still showed up. He talked to her through the plexiglass. She would respond almost unfailingly. But in the last couple of days she took a turn that we just couldn’t get her to turn around from as these fire patients sometimes do. One second they are doing great and the next they just aren’t. She sadly reached a point that we had to help her make a hard choice; to allow her to continue to struggle with no hope of recovery or to humanly euthanize her to save her from suffering. That call was made for her own good to help her cross over without allowing her to suffer any longer. As you can imagine this was not only hard on all of us, but her human as well. Somebody who had already lost everything and now he was losing the last cat he had raised as well as a lot of hope that her survival meant for him also.

Whenever we deal with these rescue situations we take on a lot of extra emotions. Everything is heightened as we want to see every creature in our care survive and survive well. We want to make sure the right pets go home with their actual owners. We do get a ton of anger directed at us because we have to wait to identify some pets. Folks are sad, desolate and desperate to find them. This is all expected and, while not ideal, we accept it and try to do the best by the pets and the owners.

What wasn’t expected by us was when this man came to pick up the body of his cat, that he very much loved and that definitely loved him, was his response. As he was leaving carrying his cat in the box we had carefully put her in, he stopped before opening the door and turned a round - he caught the eyes of a staff member, who had spoken to him almost every day since his cat had come in for care and after some very obvious deep thought and just utter loss of words he, in an emotionally strained voice, said, “Thank you for liking me!” He then opened the door with one hand as he hugged the box containing the body of his beloved cat with the other. He left us to go bury his furry friend as well as a lot of the hope he had left we are sure. Before he left we called out to him to stop him for a minute while we cut some flowers out front and gave them to him to bury with her. With a quiet “thank you” he placed them with her in her box and left.

While this is a extremely sad story to share it’s actually moments like this that not only remind us that we don’t give in vain, we help pets who are in desperate need of care, but we also help their owners to maintain connection to them. This keeps us striving to do better for, not only ourselves, but all we serve, four legged or two.

To black mama cat and to sweet Walter we say thank you. Thank you for allowing us to care for her and in turn - for you.

Update.

This is one of the cats that was pulled off the . He’s doing better and healing well. His people have found him and been into see him. Having his people come see him seemed to give him a second wind and he’s now not only still fighting to heal but he’s come out of his shell and become more outgoing with the staff. A lot of people asked about his eyes and if he was going to be able to keep them and or see again. Those were questions that we could not answer with any kind of certainty. With treatment his eyes are now not only open but he is showing signs of being able to regain his sight. He is showing promising signs of being another successful survivor!!

Sorry for the long post but this is something that hits close to home for us and needs to be shared with the public!!

Most of the vets in Klamath Falls find a way that they can help the community and help. We have chose to do that by partnering and giving back with Disaster relief efforts. That comes with extra training, money and certifications. It also means a lot of extra stress and danger. A lot goes on behind the scenes for us to be able to respond and help play the small part that we play when we show up and answer your calls for help.

In this line of work we have a personal policy and a professional policy to NEVER make promises’s as even with the certifications, training, experience and modern first world technology we have we can’t promise any kind of outcome. So we don’t make promises!!

While working the partnered with another mutual aide agency Relief Angles. We made a promise!!

On the second day of this fire we where working evacuations and stopped to deliver water to a family who where living all of our worst nightmares!! They where survivors of a hot and fast burning wild land fire that had already clamed several homes and everything anybody needed to live. The fire was still raging and they where not out of danger by any means!

While we where dropping off supplies needed for them to help them survive this living hell they where fighting. We where getting ready to leave to go to our next call out. I felt a tug at my T shirt. I looked down to see this sweet face. The world seamed to stop in that moment. She reached her hand up and whispered a “here”. Asking what this was we where answered with “this is for you! Keep it safe”. Taking a chicken feather from the little hand held up to me I responded with a robotic response of “ok….thank you!” The response that came from her eager voice almost brought me to my knees and tears to my eyes (There’s no crying in baseball or on the fire ground!) knowing that there was a very high potential that there was a very high potential to answer with true honesty…..”promise!! Promise me that you will keep it safe!!” Having no clue how this promise could be kept she was given the promise that we would keep it safe!! The fire ground had already showed us that we are playing within her rules. We where playing a potentially loosing game and the advantage was in her favor. our lives meant nothing to her!! Nothing in this life is promised so who are we to make promises!! But a promise was made non the less!!

After consulting several trusted friends. This was what we came up with as the best answer to keep this scared promise that was made by us to somebody who had survived a living nightmare and was still living it.

We have so many stories that we can’t share publicly and wouldn’t if we could. After getting permission from this little Angels parents we can now share this story.

It’s moment like this that keep us all doing what we do. We do what we all do for the animals, to speak for those who don’t have a voice. Sometimes we don’t know how much what we do trickles down to helping others! These are the moment to live and give for! There is always hope even if it is a small voice that some would dismiss. All we have to do is listen!

This little fire survivor was pulled off the Golden fire by our teams. After hospitalization and treatment he was able to be returned home to continue to heal with the rest of his loving family. Our staff was all very sad to see him go, but very happy with his outcome. Working these fires can take its toll on, not only the field teams, those whose job it is to go work the fire lines, but also the staff who treat them during their time with us. These moments are savored by us - as every little win and success story for the animals is why we do what we all do.

Update: This cat is still with us. He receives medication for pain & inflammation daily, fluids if needed and the scabs on his eyes are slowly healing and coming off on their own. We still do not have an update on whether there is sight out of those eyes. We have a possible owner, but we won't know for sure until he heals up a little more. Most of his identifiers were singed off and eye color plays an important identifier. Thank you to all who have contacted us about this cat. Definitely a sweet heart (they all are even if feisty). We will update again when there is time.

This kitty was pulled off of the fire. Does anybody know who it belongs to? It is currently being treated but needs its humans.

1800 hours July 23 2023

Sorry for the late update. Cell service has been poor.

GOOD news!! We where told that while there is not a cantainment yet “they have high hopes that the lines they got put in over night are strong and they will be able to gain control of it. Have to get through tonight and tomorrow but have high hopes” so because of this we where released from staging to being on call. They weather that was predicted for today didn’t come to variation while allowed them to make great progress!!

Update!!!

0930 July 23 2023
Over 2,000a O% containment. Still burning hot and fast!! Today will bring a red flag warning for our area which will potentially fuel this fire even more then it is it’s already burning!! She’s a beast and showing now signs of being slowed down anytime soon let alone contained! It’s going to be a very horrible day for a lot of our local community members!! We can not say this enough or loud enough!! We support premature evacuations!!!

Update!!
As of 0300 hours. We are back home and going to get a couple hours of sleep before we get busy again today!! If you are in a evacuation zone we beg you!!! Do NOT wait to call for help to get out!! This fire is not one to wait on and stay and rid out!! Today we will be under red flag warning and this fire is already running uncontrolled!! Even though we are working with other trained and certified team member and Law Enforcement there’s times we can’t not get in to get you out if you wait!! Today got a bit….sporting for our teams. Tomorrow will be worse!! So PLEASE!! Call early so that we can make sure we can actually get into you to help you get out safely!! Today brought a lot of loss to a lot of people and it is only going to get worse. This fire is going to be a long term event like the Bootleg was. Today was just a preview of what this fire is capable of! We will be back out on the front lines again as soon as we can safely do so! While we hope to not have to see you today we stand ready when you call and will do all we can to get you and your animals out safely!!

Update!
