Fun Fact Friday!

Yawning is contagious-even for a dog!

Research shows that the sound of a human yawn can trigger one from your dog and its four times as likely to happen when it’s a yawn from a person they know!

We highly recommend you try this at home! 🐾

Hello everyone!

We have received some guidance from the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) on how to handle this unidentified respiratory illness in dogs. We would like to share their recommendations with you along with our added recommendations and protocol.

What is this new respiratory disease that everyone is talking about?

Veterinarians throughout Indiana have reported a potential new strain of respiratory illness in dogs. The source of the illness has not been definitively identified, earning the reference to “mysterious respiratory illness in dogs” in the popular press. We do know that disease is caused by a bacterium, but this particular strain has not been seen previously.

Affected dogs may begin to show signs of lethargy, fever, decreased appetite, productive cough, nasal and/or ocular discharge, respiratory distress, or pneumonia. Symptoms worsen quickly over a period of 24-36 hours. These cases may also not respond to traditional antibiotic therapy and have a cough that lingers beyond the normal period of 7 to 14 days.
Widespread media reports have been generating worried inquiries from dog owners. BOAH and Buck Creek advise caution, not worry.

What are our recommendations?

• Be vigilant in monitoring your dog for signs of illness after boarding, holiday travel, or other activities where pets may have commingled with others. If a dog develops a cough or lethargy, a veterinary visit is recommended.
• Make sure all dogs are up to date on all their recommended vaccines including distemper combination (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvo), Bordetella, and canine influenza.
• Reduce contact with large numbers of unknown dogs when possible. Just like with other respiratory diseases, dogs that are co-mingled may be at greater risk for developing the illness.
• Keep sick dogs at home whenever possible (unless taking them to the veterinarian for examination or treatment). Social settings carry inherent risks of disease spread.
• Avoid communal water bowls shared by multiple dogs.
• Brachycephalic breeds, senior dogs, and dogs with diagnosed heart disease, seem more susceptible to the negative effects of this illness.

Recent and upcoming holiday travel and boarding may generate a spike in cases in the coming weeks and through the end of the year. Therefore, IF YOU MUST BOARD YOUR DOG, please make sure that your boarding facility ASKS for and CHECKS your vaccine records. If they do not require records, we highly suggest avoiding that facility until there are more known facts about this disease.

What if I have an appointment and my dog starts coughing prior?

IF YOU HAVE AN UPCOMING APPOINTMENT and your dog develops a cough beforehand, please notify our clinic via phone. We will require all dogs that are coughing to be seen in our isolation unit for the foreseeable future. This means that all coughing dogs, and their owners, will go to and stay in our isolation room for the entire appointment. PLEASE DO NOT WALK UP FRONT TO OUR RECEPTION DESK. One of our receptionists will facilitate payment through this isolation unit.

What do I do if my dog is coughing? Should my dog be seen?

Yes. Patients that have a sudden onset of coughing should be seen by their veterinarian. Your vet will choose the best protocol for treatment based on physical exam findings and other diagnostic tests that they might deem necessary.

We will continue to keep you updated on this as we get new information!
