Starting the new year with new adventures! We have added 2 beautiful new faces to the homestead! Everyone welcome Jasper and Jolene! They are loved so very much! Ensley saw a donkey on her last field trip and asked if we could take it home. She didn’t want to leave that donkeys side and gave that donkey all her food from her cup she had. There was mini ponies, highland cows and many deer she could have shared her food with but nope it was all that one doneky. She kept asking to get a donkey from dad and within a few weeks he surprised her with 2. She is in love with them! Asks to sleep in their barn with them and loves hugging them and brushing and feeding them. She is even great with carrying the hay bag down to them as well!

Hey friends! Just popping in for an appreciation post here! Look how beautiful these eggs are from our girls! BCM's, olive eggers, Easter eggers, pink eggs and speckled! I love having a variety of colors in our flock!

Did you know the heaviest, recorded egg ever laid by a chicken weighed 1 pound! For comparison, the average medium-sized chicken egg weighs about 1.75 ounces and the average goose egg weighs about 5 ounces. Keep in mind there are 16 ounces in a pound! Shew! Talk about an over achiever huh 😆

Can we talk about Duck p**p?? OK I know gross but come on it's so cool at the same time!!
Did you know duck p**p is basically like a 2.8:2.3:1.7 NPK fertilizer?
No other livestock manure has NPK ratio this high.
The closest one is turkey with 2.8/2.4/1.2 but with less p**p per pound per day. This means with duck you get the most p**p per day and you need the least p**p to get the same level of fertilizer. Duck p**p is the bomb! Its a cold fertilizer so it won't burn those plants either!

Hey hey hey my friends!!!

Let’s talk eggs!

Duck Eggs vs. Chicken Eggs 🍳
Duck eggs are larger in size than chicken eggs. The whites in chicken eggs have a higher water content (more runny) than the whites in duck eggs. Duck eggs have larger yolks and a higher yolk-to-white ratio than chicken eggs.

We have both. Yes, they are different from each other, so I am gonna break it down quick:

🦆 Duck eggs are GREAT for baking.
🐓 Chicken eggs have thinner shells.
🦆 Duck eggs are larger and richer than 🐓 chicken eggs.
🐓 Chickens are prolific layers year-round if taken care of correctly, but 🦆 ducks are as well with much less light necessity.
🦆 Duck eggs stay fresh longer because of their insanely thick shell.
🦆 Duck eggs contain 30% more protein and a different type of protein than 🐓 chicken eggs, so if allergic to chicken eggs, most can eat duck eggs and vice versa.
Ounce for ounce, 🦆 duck eggs contain more Omega-3, Vitamins A and D, fatty acids, choline, folate, and iron than 🐓 chicken eggs.
🐓 Chickens lay well for about 1-2 years, then dramatically start slowing down production, while 🦆 ducks lay solid for 4-5 years before they slow down.
🐓 Chicken eggs come in a lot more colors.
So there ya have it!

Did you know Ducks can sleep with one eye open?
Ducks can turn off half of their brain while keeping the other half alert for predators. They will usually only fully rest both halves if they are feeling safe & protected either in the middle of a large group of ducks or in a safe location. P.s. they are eating the tadpoles from a pot that was left on the porch with rain water in it… we have 100’s of frogs here so these ones went to good use 😉

Hey friends! Did you know that chickens right eye focuses on food and near things, and the left focuses on distance and possible danger?
Also they can see in ultraviolet wavelengths too! Humans see in three color bands (red, blue and green); chickens have these too but have UV in addition. It is thought that the ultraviolet band helps the mother hen know which chicks are her healthiest so she can concentrate on raising them. It may also help her determine which eggs will hatch-a neat trick! This could explain why she will kick some eggs out of the nest.

Hey chicken fam! Did you know….

Chicken’s Hearing Can Regenerate

A chicken’s hearing is a very valuable sense to have. As prey animal, they need to be able to hear acutely.

Their hearing is so acute they can determine where the sound came from and pinpoint it to within a few feet.

So what happens when a chicken’s hearing starts to deteriorate? Simple, they grow new hearing cells.

They can regenerate cells as they are needed so that the affected bird has nearly 100% hearing.

This is currently being studied as it has huge implications for human deafness.

How cool is that?!?

Ellie loving on Diego. We have official confirmation he can never be released due to malocclusion. We have to trim his very wonky incisors until we can find a vet that can remove them. I’m going to be checking with UT to see if they can do the procedure. Did you know squirrels have 16 molars? He will forever be our baby. Just hoping to get him eating some more solid foods with his molars. His incisors have caused issues with being able to eat so he is still currently being syringe fed three times a day. Hoping UT can help and that it doesn’t cost us too much.

Hey friends! Been awhile! Shew we have been busy for sure! We hatched out some quail and they went to their new home! Worked on the garden and we have gotten 6.8 lbs of green beans within 3 picks on a small 3 x5 bed… we have tons of cucumbers that will be coming in the next few weeks and a few more garden beds full of green beans are starting to pop up. We have radish, squash, zucchini and a few peppers that are slower to the game but coming around! Here soon our ducks will be laying their eggs as well!
