Friday Fun Facts, featuring Mushka & baby Spudnik!

The Keeshond (pronounced "kayz-hawnd") is historically referred to as a barge dog, having been kept as guards and companions on Dutch vessels. They are one of few breeds who throughout history have only been bred for family companions and watchdogs. Today, not only are these dogs still excellent family companions, but they also shine in the fields of obedience, agility, rally, and therapy.

The plural of the breed is Keeshonden ("kayz-hawnd-en").

Baby Spudnik (12 weeks) had a big day Friday!

We are continuing to get him comfortable with grooming, using short exposure periods and lots of fun snacks along the way! He got all of his tiny nails trimmed, and then Dremeled for the first time! He got his first professional bath, and we learned that for now, his favorite dryer is Mom's hair dryer. 😊

He even got to go on an adventure trip with The Houndry . I have no doubt this little fluffball slept HARD at the end of his big day.

🌷 Spring is finally here, and warmer days are (eventually 😂) on the way! 🌷 So I thought this would be a good opportunity to discuss once more, something that all pet owners have to deal with at one time or another -- fleas and ticks! 😝

As a pet groomer, a couple of misconceptions that I hear from time to time are "It's Winter -- they shouldn't be getting fleas when it's cold outside", and/or "My dog doesn't spend all THAT much time outside, I don't know how they would have gotten fleas ".

As a pet owner, I am dedicated to keeping both my dog and cat on flea prevention year-round! Not only because getting rid of fleas on your pet and in your house is SUCH a chore; but also, Winter weather in East Tennessee doesn't truly get cold enough for long enough, to ensure that all fleas die. And fleas can enter your home in ways other than riding in on your pet! One could easily hitch a ride on your shoes as you come home from any number of daily activities, as one example.

There are a wide variety of flea and tick preventative products available, from topical liquids, to collars, and oral tablets. I am happy to discuss these products with my clients and give my personal recommendations based on my personal experiences, but please keep in mind I am not a medical professional and my advice/suggestions should not replace the recommendations from your veterinarian. 🧑‍⚕️

Welcome to the Coat & Crest family, baby Spudnik! ☺️

Spudnik, an almost 9-week-old Keeshond, got to meet his groomer today! We worked on introducing him to various pieces of equipment, a little brushing, and were able to trim all of his very sharp puppy nails with assistance from his new Mama and a can of spray cheese!

Raising a puppy to be accustomed to grooming takes a lot of dedication, time, and effort by both the family and their groomer. I look forward to watching this sweet one grow. 🩵

Happy Saturday, everyone! I hope you will all enjoy your weekend despite the rainy weather.

I wanted to give a brief update, as I'm sure there are some folks who aren't aware yet what's been happening with me lately.

On the Sunday & Monday of Thanksgiving week, I had two major surgeries. It was a completely unexpected event, and definitely not one that I would have planned right in the middle of the holiday season. For pet groomers everywhere, this time of year is the busiest of all, and I always look forward to getting your pets clean and cute for holiday festivities!

I have been at home recovering these past few weeks, and now am slowly getting back into driving and working. Things are "one day at a time" right now as I work on regaining my energy & stamina so that I can get back to my regular multiple-appointments-per-day schedule style.

Thank you to everyone who has shown me so much love & care during my recovery! It means so much to me, and I so look forward to seeing everyone again as I am able!

I wanted to take this opportunity to send out a friendly reminder regarding some health hazards that Halloween poses for our fur kids.

Chocolate and macadamia nuts are both highly toxic to dogs. Best to keep all the chocolates to yourself, whether or not they contain nuts.

Xylitol has become an increasingly common sweetener in many of our products today - from sugar-free gum & candy, to peanut butter, pudding cups, and the list goes on. Products containing xylitol should be kept out of your dog's reach year-round, as it can be toxic within as little as 10 minutes after ingestion. Please don't risk spending your Halloween night at the animal ER, instead of curled up on the couch watching Halloween movies with your fur baby, or enjoying trick-or-treating with your children.

Summer is in full swing 🥵

This time of year, pets can develop itchy, flaky skin, allergies, etc. It is not uncommon for pet parents to seek prescription relief from their veterinarian in order to help their pets feel better.🩺

If your pet has been prescribed a medicated shampoo for its skin condition (regardless of the time of year), please don't hesitate to let me know at the beginning of your appointment! These shampoos typically have to rest on the skin for an extended period of time, and I am happy to accommodate this during their bath. 🛁 🐾

One of the sweetest parts of this job for me is watching families grow.

Whether that looks like ~

🌷 A family welcoming home a puppy after grieving the loss of their older dog.

🌷 Being there through the years as a family goes from their newlywed apartment to their first house, where they bring home their first child.

🌷 A family with only one dog, welcoming a second dog home.

🌷 Being present during the time Baby Sister is brought home from the hospital.

Mamas (of all kinds) -- I see you! Working hard and loving your families with your whole heart! Thank you for welcoming me into your "day-to-day" and trusting me to help care for your fur babies, letting me love them too.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit a wonderful new business in Oak Ridge, The Backyard, AND help a pair of shelter kitties while they are in their quarantine period, preparing for adoption!

Sweet new mama Olive got her (likely first ever) bath, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and mats shaved from her fur. She was very unsure of some elements of her grooming session, but with the help of a Happy Hoodie and an extra pair of hands to comfort and reassure her, she truly did amazing.

Handsome man Pewter was an absolute love towards me at the shelter. Purring, rolling on his back, etc, he couldn't get enough attention and petting. He tolerated his nail trimming, seemed to enjoy his ear cleaning, but turned into a 🌶️ spicy señor during the shaving off of his mats which was very needed. He was much more compliant for his comb out. I believe with time and gentle, regular exposure to grooming, these two wonderful cats will become accustomed to it as part of their bright, healthy futures!
