As 2024 draws to a close, it’s impossible to ignore how much the dog training field has shifted.

This year, we squarely confronted archaic practices that rely on pain, fear, and intimidation and the aversive trainers who prop them up. In doing so, we’ve taken personal risks, lost old alliances, and exposed how deeply our industry must still reckon with its own failures.

We are done pretending that those clinging to fear-based methods deserve an equal voice.

As we move into 2025, our commitment to challenging violent, coercive techniques only intensifies. We will speak out against exploitative police dog programs, reject legislative half-measures designed to placate abusers, and push harder than ever to eradicate these tools of harm.

For every person who has stood with us, who understands that this fight is about more than just training dogs - it’s about safeguarding their wellbeing and our own moral standing - thank you. While progress can feel painfully slow, we have made remarkable strides. We refuse to yield. We will not grant ground to those who seek to stall our momentum.

The path forward is clear: no more excuses, no more compromises, and no more space for those who insist on pain and fear.

Stay engaged, share these truths, and help us build a coalition strong enough to ensure that cruelty is never again the cost of working with dogs.

Julie is the trainer behind Dixie Dog Training. Julie has been a certified professional dog trainer since 2005 after a career in mass communications. She started at a big box pet store teaching group and private classes and after 6 years decided she could help more people and their dogs by taking training into people's homes. Through Julie's education and experience with both human and animal learning, she creates custom training solutions for all her clients. Julie is 'Mom' to 3 dogs, a Hound mix named Travis, a Greyhound mix named Wally, who was also a HABIT therapy dog, and a German Shepherd named Ghillie. Julie has also been lucky enough to share her life with Saints, Basset Hounds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Labs, Border Colies and Golden Retrievers. When Julie is not working, you can find her volunteering at local events, area dog rescues, working around her old house, and watching sports.
