Kathys Camp for Canines

I have had a few requests for reservations since I ran this.... Just rerunning.

Today marks a happy sad day at Kathys Camp. As of today I will no longer be taking any new reservations. I have accepted a position working for the Great Smoky Mountain Association. All current reservations will be kept but no new ones can be made. I have loved this business. I have loved all of my dogs and pet parents. This is just the right thing for me. I love the Mountains and can't turn down an opportunity to work there. I appreciate each and every one of you for your support over the last 3 years. You helped me find my way and I am ever grateful. I will do my best to find another home sitter I can refer you to. Thank you my friends. I will miss you.

Labradoodle Creator Now Regrets Cross-Breeding

I was just discussing this with someone this morning. I have a Labradoodle. He is wonderful but I have often said "this is a man made dog." Sometimes I think we mess around too too much.

The Labradoodle, a mix between a labrador (lab) and a standard poodle, was originally bred for a woman who needed a non-allergenic guide dog. Now, the man responsible for the breed's creation says he regrets creating a new breed – and the problems that came with it.

Last year a stray showed up at camp. Thankfully he had a rabies tag on and I contacted the vet to find the owner. Please watch your pets, especially this week!

More pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. Many of them are terrified of the loud booms and run away. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this year!

Camp does not accept dogs that aren't spayed or neutered. (once appropriate age) Please spay and neuter your pets. There is no reason for the unwanted animals other than the ignorance of people. It's your responsibility to make this happen for them. Your pet will be happier, less likely to roam, and you can rest in the fact you are part of the solution. If you have a male dog ...it's not ok that they knock up the neighborhood. Just because you aren't dealing with the puppies doesn't mean they don't exist. Do the right thing.

Dear Grady, Just because the cat moved and the sun is barely up does not mean you need to kiss me and get me up. It really doesn't. This boy wakes up raring to go...no doubt about that. I love my campers and Grady is one special boy. I am looking forward to some down time next week though. This campmaster has a week off! Enjoy your day camp families.

Camp is preparing for Diva's return today. Lady is chillin' and one of the coolest campers ever. Ok, I say that about all my campers but she is my first basset hound camper! I have decided Lady is half sloth until there is a cat involved. Poor Cats.

Lady loves cats. She is absolutely perplexed by these animals. She can't rest or sit down if there is a cat anywhere in her sight. Her nose can find them when I can't! She may just want to eat them but I think it's love. Poor Cats. Have a great day!

Please pay extra attention to what you plant and what you use in your garden. Many plants, plant foods, additives and mulches are poisonous to cats and dogs. There are lots of plants that are good for them too! Do your homework.

PET OWNER ALERT

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don’t have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s web site,

This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.”

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called ‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Concentrated levels of theobromine are in this particular mulch, making it deadly. Don't bring it home if you have pets.

Finding out a long time camper is returning again, against his old age odds, makes this Camp master smile big time! JACK is coming. Jack is coming. You all know how I feel about my old bestie Jack. I am so happy. Did I mention older dogs are my specialty? They don't deserve to be kenneled...they deserve Kathys Camp!

OK. I REALLY have no availability for the rest of May or any of June. I appreciate the messages and the calls but I REALLY have no more room. I wish there were two of me and double the room but I have to be able to manage the campers in my house. If you need me in July or August you better be in touch now. I have very very limited availability for those months. My heart can love them but my square footage is limited. :)

May is filling up fast and June will be full before long. Make your reservations today or your best friend will be caged up in a crate in a fenced in kennel while you are at the beach. That is just wrong. I provide a home environment and never crate or cage your dog. Let me know how I can help you have a better vacation knowing your dog is well cared for at Kathys Camp.
