Kodiak Animal Shelter

Kodiak Animal Shelter The Humane Society of Kodiak has operated the only animal shelter for the entire Kodiak Archipelago since 1995.

The Humane Society of Kodiak has been contracted by the City of Kodiak to operate the Kodiak Animal Shelter since 1995, changing it to a โ€œNo Killโ€ shelter for friendly, adoptable animals in 1997 thanks to community support. It is solely through memberships, fundraising, and donations that we are able to spay/neuter and provide other veterinary care for the animals awaiting adoption. We are not me

mbers of, nor are we formally affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society. We have our own bylaws and mission statement and operate independently to service Kodiak Island in its entirety, including the city, Borough, Villages, and the Coast Guard Base. Our focus and the point to our fundraising is to prevent the cruelty of animals through education and by promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing the population of abandoned pets through spay/neuter programs and to promote the proper care of animals impounded at the shelter. If you have an after-hours emergency, please call the Kodiak Police Department (KPD) at (907) 486-8000. If you have a found or surrendered animal, you may leave it in the drop-off hut after hours, but please leave us with information on the form provided in the hut and please call KPD to notify them of the pet.

Our Story

The Humane Society of Kodiak is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charitable corporation managed by a volunteer board of directors, since 1994. Our organization has operated the Kodiak Animal Shelter for the City of Kodiak since 1995, becoming a "no kill" shelter for friendly, adoptable pets in 1997. We are the only such service provider in the Kodiak Archipelago, and we service the City of Kodiak, the borough, and all surrounding villages.

Our focus and the point to our fundraising is to prevent the cruelty of animals through education and by promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing the population of abandoned pets through spay/neuter programs and to promote the proper care of animals impounded at the shelter. Our volunteer board is made up of community members who enjoy the Alaskan lifestyle and have lived on Kodiak Island for many years.
