We just love to visit with our past puppies! Today I groomed miss Phoebe (formerly Lisa from the Simpson litter Artemis X Vinny) she walked into the house like she knew exactly where she was. Said hi to her granddad Flash 1/2 brother Kal, daddy Vinny, aunt alita, and her BEST friend Drax (a malinois) I really do enjoy grooming poodles 🥰🥰

Yesterday was a great day! Flash and Artemis earned their AKC Farm Dog Certification!!! We ran 2 trails yesterday and qualified each trial! So that earned the farm dog title! Both dogs worked so hard! Thank you Lucky Dog Sanctuary for hosting such a great event!

I copied this! This is a great explanation of how much actually goes into a responsible/reputable breeder! Choose your breeder wisely! Ask questions!

🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩
It’s way more of a commitment and work than everyone thinks, if you do it the right and responsible way. Here’s to all the preservation breeders that breed to better the health and commit to be there for the life of their puppies! 👇👇👇

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?

BREEDER: $**** dollars.

POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!

BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?

POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $1200. You reputable breeders are so over priced.

BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way, why don't you try it yourself?

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!

BREEDER: For FREE I can teach you how to do it, and in addition you will have the knowledge to do it again.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!

BREEDER: To start you will need a Female (average cost $3000 and up) and a Male (average cost $3000 and up) or Semen (average $3000 and up). You will need to do Genetic & Health Testing on them, averages about $1500+ per Dog. Lets not forget Progesterone Testings, C-Section Inseminations, Ultrasounds, X-rays, Semen Collections, Storage, Semen Analysis, potentially Semen overnight shipping and so on ($2500+). Raise and provide Daily Care, Feeding & Grooming for 2 years of the potential Stud/Dam, (minimal $300 per month) Oh, don’t forget Monthly Prevention, Annual Vet Visits and any other additional Vet Visits.
On top of this if you Show - Entries, Equipment, Travel etc.

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...

BREEDER: For $10,000 you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.

POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.

BREEDER: OK so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 3 weeks to help with delivery, care ( a million loads of laundry) plus weeks afterwards to monitor mum and puppies.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Ten weeks?? it's way too much time for me! I have to work.

BREEDER: Plus You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has a unforseen emergency.

BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($150/ test ) & C-section($2000-$5000) and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand/tube feeding supplies in case of emergency....

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!

BREEDER: For $5000+ you can buy them.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a Puppy.

BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are No Vacations or Holidays, while you go to visit with family & friends we are home at our dogs side caring for them. It is a no breaks commitment.

THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a Reputable Person/Breeder, you aren’t only purchasing the Puppy but also: Knowledge, Support , Experience, Love, Time, Sacrifices, etc...

**Plus the cost of Life Time Support to the Puppy Owners…

These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg (best case scenario!!!) as a Reputable Breeder who takes on this journey full time!

Very well said…

Realistic Expectations
You go to the breeders home. The pups are all social. They are quiet in the pen. The breeder shows you videos of them being totally relaxed at a dog show. All looks amazing and you bring your puppy home.
Then reality hits. The puppy may cry in the crate for the first few nights making you tired and agitated. The happy social puppy is refusing to greet the half dozen overly excited friends you invited over to see your new puppy. The puppy refuses to walk on a leash. Many are wondering how did my perfect puppy turn into a nightmare.
So let’s discuss realistic expectations of when a puppy goes home. First of all the puppy has been in the breeders home since birth. They had their mother and often littermates. They had their routine, were taught expectations and were completely in their comfort zone.
Now suddenly they are taken to a totally new environment. Picture yourself being dropped into an unknown country, often in a different part of the world. You know only a few words of their language. Differnt trees, animals, smells, temperature and people. Now in the middle of this we are switching up your routine, decide to have a party with people you dont know, and ask you to do jobs you have no idea about. Overwhelming to say the least.
This is what every puppy goes through when going to their new home. Stress manifests in different forms. From not eating, reluctancy to play and greet people. Being apprehensive at the vet’s office or as strangers reach for them. Diarrhea, vomiting and depression can occur.
So what can you as a new owner do to help your little one acclimate?
- most puppies take 3-4 weeks to acclimate to their new home. Repeat after me THREE to FOUR WEEKS! Not a 1-2 days. I can’t stress this enough about how much time is needed for a dog or puppy to feel comfortable in their new home!
- limit guests during the first week. We understand you are excited to show off your new baby but they need time to adjust. Plan on waiting 1-2 weeks before inviting people over
- ask guest to sit on the ground and let the puppy approach them. No squealing and grabbing the puppy
- set up a good routine
- restrict the puppy to a small area of the house. This not only reduces them being overwhelmed but also allows you to watch them
- don’t expect a 9-13 week old puppy to walk on a leash. Instead work at home with a leash where they are comfortable. Let them drag the leash, use treats to encourage them to walk with you
- if your puppy is refusing to walk give them time. My first trips to town with puppies a walk around a small block took 1 1/2 hours. We only move when they initiate the movement as they need time to take in the different environment
- understand your puppy needs time to see you as family. Expecting an immediate bond is unrealistic
- train your puppy. This not only helps you to bond but the puppy to look to you for direction and input
- lastly be patient. Don’t declare “omg there’s something wrong with this dog”. Nothing occurs overnight. Outings should be planned at puppy speed. So while you might imagine a fun walk around the lake in reality your puppy might only be able to handle walking a short distance that day.
Most outings for me take a long time, as I am often just standing still as the puppy cautiously explores the new environment. Patience is key!
Remember if the puppy was wonderful at the breeder’s house but now is struggling, you as the owner, need to help the puppy adjust which takes time, patience and training. Have realistic expectations and give the puppy positive experiences. Each puppy is an individual, don’t compare your current puppy to past pets and judge their behavior based on how another dog handled things. Lastly, try to see thing’s from a puppy’s perspective and adjust situations accordingly.
