What is your specialty Alyssa?
I don't know if I have one but I'll tell you where I started.

When I was about 12 we got this pittie, (see photo). Her name is Starburst. She had come from and abusive home and was abandoned. Starburst was one of the sweetest dogs. So gentle and caring, even with an obnoxious young girl. When I met her she cowered from the movement of a patio chair. I knew I had to help. Over many years she grew past most of her discomforts and fears and continued to be a happy girl.

When I was 18 I started volunteering at the shelter we got Starburst from and I fell in love with the work. Fast forward a year, my grandma said I should be a dog trainer. So, I went to school.

Skip to 21, I moved to La Crosse and met Tracy, owner of Happy Tails, and started learning from her. Shortly after, taking up a basic manners class. Shortly after Starburst passed.

Now, 27, I wouldn't say I have a specialty but I would say I have a special place in my heart for dogs that need rehabilitation and a second chance. My two current dogs, though they may try to convince you that they are not loved, have never known the life Starburst did and as long as I am alive, I will work hard to prevent dog abuse. Rehabilitate those who have suffered through it. And, love every dog I can.

Stay... how do I train a stay? How can I make my dog good at stay? Let's talk about this for a second.

Homemade brain puzzles are a great way to keep your dog busy through out the day. Lily loves a rolled up towel with treats.

Lily acting natural

As a trainer, I get a lot of questions about leash manners. "Why does my dog pull?" "Why can't my dog walk in a straight line?" "Why does my dog halt?" The answer is simple. It's natural. That is natural for dogs. Understanding a dogs natural instincts can often be the first step to training. Lily often zig zags and halts when we walk but we trained out pulling. Leash manners can be hard but it is never too late to start. As the weather gets warmer, leash manners will become more important. Things that can help: 1. Eye contact games 2. Consistency 3. Food and toy rewards (even on walks) 4. Patience Don't be afraid to reach out about private lessons. Sundays are wide open. I am also available early mornings if you like to get your walk in before work!
