Grateful to Dr.Callie for nominating HorseSense and to the Holmen Business Association for voting us in 2nd place! HorseSense is surrounded by the best community 🐴😆

We also think Baby P needs to do more of our check presentations because that smile is a 10/10💕

Dr. Callie is a member of the Holmen Business Association and proudly nominated as her choice for a non-profit to be apart of the first ever Holmen After 5 “Shark Tank” event. HorseSense took second place! ✨

We have a human anniversary today😆

Today marks 9 years since Christy began her journey with HorseSense as the Operations Manger! As Operations Manager, Christy oversees and manages the care for our beloved herd (both in and out of the lesson setting) and also ensures our beautiful property is maintained. Christy became a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor in 2018 and an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning in 2022 through PATH, Intl.

Christy has always loved horses and began taking lessons and showing when she was in her teens. While attending college, Christy was a part of the UW-L Equestrian Team and competed in IHSA competitions. Christy also teaches riding lessons at a local stable in La Crosse and was the coach of the UW-L Equestrian from 2014 to 2019. She enjoys all aspects of horses including the daily care, training, riding and teaching.

Christy’s favorite thing about working at HorseSense is witnessing the connection that is made between the horses, riders, and volunteers during lessons.

Thank you Christy for all you do and always making sure our herd is taken care of 💕🐴

A HUGE Thank You to J.F. Brennan Company, Inc.!

We are beyond grateful to local business J.F. Brennan for their Full Sponsorship of Ozzy! Thanks to their generous support, Ozzy will receive the financial assistance in the veterinary care, nutrition, and farrier care he needs to continue making a difference in the lives of our riders.

Without our incredible herd, the accomplishments of our riders wouldn’t be possible. Our horses provide comfort, encouragement to youth, adults, and military Veterans in an inclusive environment in our community. But they can't do it alone.

Every sponsorship directly supports the health, well-being, and continued training of our herd, ensuring they can keep changing lives.

We still have other herd members available for sponsorship! Want to learn more? Know a business or organization that might want to sponsor a horse? We'd love to hear from you!

It was the first day of spring and yet the view felt a bit un-spring like 🤣

Life on the ridge means lots of snow drifts so thank you to AJ’s Lawncare and Snow Removal for getting the driveway all plowed! Especially since they came after an already very long and busy shift. We are super grateful for their willingness to come and help us! 🐴❄️

It was a wonderful weekend of learning and connecting🐴🤝

Thank you to River Valley Riders for hosting this years PATH Intl. Region 6 conference this past weekend and to everyone who made the weekend a success! HorseSense had an anniversary yesterday👀

Help us wish Tito a wonderful (and belated) FOURTEENTH HorseSense-iversary!

Tito joined us in 2011 and he has been worth his weight in gold ever since. He is our steady eddy and wonderful with new riders, individuals building up their core, and ones who may be a bit fearful at first. Tito is patient, stoic, and always willing to give riders the time they need to get comfortable with the routine.

In Tito’s spare time you can find him eating to his hearts content in the pasture, napping in the sun, and hangout out with Bud and Poptart. We are grateful for a magnificent 14 years with Tito and look forward to many more 🤎🐴

Thank you to Property 1 Commercial & Residential Maintenance for helping us get some pre-session barn maintenance completed! We are always so grateful for everything they help us with around the property and this is no different.

The stall barn maintenance was part of the grant that we received from the La Crosse Area Community Foundation that made the new stall fronts happen as well. So again, thank you LACF for your continued support!

Our Story

HorseSense is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with and without disabilities through a friendship with the horse. We strives to improve the bodies, minds and spirits of riders by providing weekly therapeutic horseback riding lessons that:

Create a positive environment for learning Emphasize the capabilities of each rider Improve physical health Provide a sense of accomplishment and control

There are several benefits youth and adults with cognitive, physical and psychological disabilities experience throughout lessons as they master their riding skills. Sitting astride a horse increases balance and coordination, strengthens muscles and brings about body awareness, for example. And through complex, interactive lessons, riders practice their speech, reading and problem-solving skills as they learn to follow instructions. Other benefits include: improved reflexes, weight-bearing ability, range of motion, stamina, hand-eye coordination, sensory integration, left/right discrimination, decision-making, independence, patience, physical fitness and responsibility.

The impact of therapeutic horseback riding is life-long as such benefits hit the very core of our riders: their identities. Riders build their self-esteem and self-efficacy by regulating their emotions to convert negative feelings into constructive motivation. This motivation they experience throughout lessons carries into their everyday lives, empowering them to believe in themselves and their abilities.
