Here is a good reminder about the importance of regular dental exams. Poor Ceasar is a 19-year-old quarter horse gelding who recently got lucky enough to acquire new owners. They brought him in for routine vaccines and an exam for weight loss. This is what we found. The severely overgrown bottom tooth on the right side of the screen in the first picture has literally pushed a hole through the roof of his mouth into his sinus cavity (called an oronasal fistula). This tooth was overgrown because the top tooth in that location is absent. Horses have hypsodont teeth, which means they continue to erupt throughout the horse's life at a rate of about 3 mm per year. It has taken many years for the tooth to be overgrown to this degree. The rest of his teeth have severe sharp points, hooks, and uneven wear as well. The staining on his cheeks is caused by Ceasar chronically biting his cheeks while trying to eat. It is unlikely that he has ever received dental care with these extreme abnormalities. The second picture is after dental floating. He will need repeat dental care in 6 months to further correct his bite and reduce the overgrown tooth further. Yearly dental exams are recommended for all horses so that we can prevent severe issues from developing. Call us at 252-566-5041 if your horse needs dental or other care. Just a heads up to our clients. Check the dates on your Coggins and other things that you may need done on a deadline. We are currently scheduling farm call appointments into April and May. Dr Ipock is still the only vet at our clinic and this is our busiest time of year. Short notice farm call service may not be available. We can always see you and your horses more quickly at the clinic as a haul in appointment. Don't wait until the last minute to get on our schedule.
