At our employee Christmas party every year, it’s tradition to say a prayer as a gathered group before the meal.
One of the employees wrote out the prayer as a poem this year and read it out loud. We thought it would be a special thing to share with you.
A Christmas Prayer - Veterinary Edition
Dear Lord…
Thank you for another year under the sun
A year that feels like it’s only just begun
Thank you for…
A handful of chickens and a whole lot of cats
A sprinkle of horses and a few rabid bats
Thank you for steady hands that close up big wounds
Thank you for the mama cows having calves under full moons
Thank you for the ones who just need a nail trim
And for the fresh bowl of food for a dog who’s too thin
For a Tom Cat with an abscess that makes us say ewwww
For the tired mother sheep who just gave birth to a ewe
Thank you for those who work all day long
Then go do homework and baths and sing bedtime songs
Thank you for the Krueig right there in our lobby
Because Veterinary Medicine became all of our hobbies
But sometimes we are tired….and we JUST NEED SOME COFFEE
Thank you for teaching us what we should strive to be
For the receptionists that understand the client who can’t speak
Because they just don’t know if it’s really that time
We know you see us, and you help us shine
For the employee who just couldn’t say no
To another stray dumped in the road
And for the ones who clean up the p**p and the p*e
Day in and day out without missing a beat
For the endless piles of laundry
that prove we are keeping patients comfy
And for our office cats - even when they are grumpy
For the teeth that need cleaning
The a**l glands that need squeezing
And the asthmatic cat who can’t quit wheezing
For the full boarding kennels and the staff who are always there
Filling water bowls and giving pills to the ones left in their care
For the groomer who drives 100 miles round trip
To give hair cuts and de-sheds with a clip and a snip
And the blow dryers that are so loud ear plugs must be worn
And for the bathers who can probably name every shampoo ever born
For the ones working through lunch more often than not
For the tech on the floor eating food that should be hot
But she’s more focused on giving her dying patient all that she’s got.
Thank you for the doctors guiding the way
And for signing our checks for our bi-weekly pay
But it’s much more than that, they show up every day
Always diving head first into the fray
Thank you for all you do - there are a million more things to say
And we can see the Lord working through each of you in wonderful ways
What an honor it is to do this work
To trek through the woods to the cow laying in the dirt
To bandage a paw that’s bleeding and hurt
Without us, those critters would be so much worse.
Lord, We know you are with us especially when
We let go of a loved one, a family member, a friend
And we hug their owners and promise they will see them again.
Thank you for our sister clinic now and the sister clinic to come,
Just think, next year we’ll have more stories and fun
To show us we’re blessed in every way
Because we keep growing, and it’s a really good thing
Please hold us all close as we end another year
And help us always remember the reason we’re all here.
Thank you for this clinic, for this family we hold dear,
Merry Christmas to All and Happy New Year.
