If you stand directly behind a horse, these are the muscles that you will see.
Biceps Femoris (white) - The largest and most lateral of the hamstrings. Has multiple heads and impacts multiple joints.
Semitendinosus (light green) - The middle hamstring, sandwiched between the others.
Semimembranosus (dark green) - The most medial hamstring.

Commonly occurring in the semitendinosus and semimembranosus, fibrotic myopathy is the name for muscle scarring. Fibrotic myopathy is caused by acute trauma or chronic strain, usually when the hamstring muscles are hyperextended. Trauma may be the result of a horse slipping in the field or getting caught in a fence. Strain of the hamstrings is most common in Quarter Horses that are competing in the western disciplines. Repeated sliding stops and quick cutting maneuvers can cause tearing and the build up of scar tissue.
Many horses that suffer from fibrotic myopathy are left with permanent scarring and a characteristic lameness called "goose stepping". Goose stepping is often considered a mechanical lameness, causing abnormal movement but not pain. In the early stages of injury, bodywork can be a great way to reduce the amount of scar tissue that builds up. With proper treatment by a veterinarian and regular bodywork sessions, some horses with fibrotic myopathy can heal without lasting symptoms.
