Some great information to know about the bird flu cases going on!

Avian influenza (H5N1) cases have been detected in cats in California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, linked to contaminated poultry and dairy products. Cats are particularly vulnerable, with severe illness and even fatalities reported. Dogs are also at risk, though they tend to experience milder symptoms.

Tips to Protect Your Pets:
✔️ Avoid feeding raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, or eggs.
✔️ Keep cats indoors and away from wild birds, poultry, and livestock.
✔️ Contact us immediately if your cat shows signs like lethargy, fever, respiratory issues, or neurologic symptoms. Our phone number is 541-209-6960.

To learn more about symptoms, prevention, and what to do if H5N1 is suspected, visit the AVMA website: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-health/avian-influenza/avian-influenza-h5n1-cats

‼️ Attention all pet owners ‼️
We are starting to see Birch Sugar on labels in replacement of Xylitol- these are the same thing and are toxic to pets!

What is Xylitol/Birch Sugar??
-Xylitol can be found in oral care products, pharmaceuticals, and as a food additive. Product examples include sugar-free gum, candies, breath mints, baked goods, peanut butter, pudding snacks, and cough syrup; chewable or gummy vitamins, supplements or over-the-counter medications; mouthwash, and toothpaste.

Here is more information on Xylitol and why it’s toxic to your pets!

Are you keeping your pets safe this winter? Here are some things to remember.

1. Avoid using rock salt and other salt-based deicers on walkways around your home- not only are they toxic if eaten directly off the ground or licked off paws once inside, but these deicers are also very drying to your dog’s paw pads and delicate skin between their toes. Sometimes deicers even include ethylene glycol (antifreeze), which is poisonous to pets

2. Look for pet-safe deicers to use around your home.

3. Use booties if your pet will tolerate them.

4. After returning from a walk, wash or wipe your dog’s paws with warm water, a cloth or grooming wipes.

5. Protective balms are available for your dog’s paws to add protection.

Going on vacation? Make sure you have your pets covered with a travel checklist!

~Emergency information: Provide your pet sitter with information like: What to do in case of emergency, emergency contact numbers, the location of your pet's carrier, payment information for emergency care, leave a letter of permission to treat for pet sitters, and most importantly contacting your local hospitals to set up care instructions in case of an emergency while out of town!

~Pet sitter or boarding: If you can't leave your pet at home alone, you can consider hiring a pet sitter or boarding them. When choosing a pet sitter, it's important to find a reputable one.

~Identification: Ensure your pet has a collar and ID tags, and consider microchipping them.

~Vaccinations: Make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations, and ask your veterinarian about any additional vaccinations that may be needed for your destination.

~Medications: Before leaving town, make sure to call in all your pets medications and have them ready prior to leaving town to set your pet up for success. Skipping medication dosing can be dangerous or lead to other health problems.

~First aid kit: Prepare a pet-friendly first aid kit.

~Care instructions: Make sure to prepare a instruction list for your pets daily care and needs.
