Puppies get sick!

Reba had a stomach bug due to eating silly things in the yard. Puppies eat silly things and get sick. Its part of the puppy fun.

After a full day of not wanting to eat and bathroom issues we were concerned but she was drinking and active just not puppy excited active. We offered a bland meal of cooked chicken mixed with rice and cottage cheese. She ate it, and after a good night sleep was back to normal.

Thankfully she was ok but it was dramatic! Deciding when to head to the vet is a personal decision, but for us as long as she was not lethargic, drinking, and no blood in the bathroom activities we waited.

Thankfully we have a good vet already, but this highlights its important to have a relationship with a local vet who you can call for advice, or visit for urgent care and forbid emergency care.

Tommorrow is Reba's first Thanksgiving and we are grateful for her.

Puppies & Cars!

Puppies and cars are complicated. Some puppies love the car, others hate the car. This love and hate will continue well into adult hood so its important to cultivate the right attitude early.

Like most things in the end its exposure, and positive associations.

Best practice is to be taking the puppy to lots of places including dog friendly businesses such as Friedas, Home Depot, Rural King, ect for socialization so while you are doing this work with the puppy getting in and out of the car with lots of praise and rewards.

Make sure the puppy is comfortable in the car in a safe place. Honestly most of us do not have a crate in the car so that means laps of a passenger, or a seatbelt clip.

Lastly have fun with the puppy and the car. My wife and I enjoy heading to a coffee drive thru to get ourselves coffee and Reba her pup cup. This is a short trip that brings a positive association and can work wonders if you are short on time for car training.

Puppies & Fleas!

In Illinois September-November is prime time flea season. They can strike year round but this is the time of year most infestations happen.

If your puppy has seen the vet they are most likely on a heartworm medication...but it is important to realize not all of those treat for fleas and ticks as well. Always read your labels.

Reba is on a heartworm medication which pulls triple duty keeping her safe from ticks and fleas as well. As that is what makes sense for us.

It is an immense topic and the simple truth is almost every product works at the job it is designed to do. You must pick the criteria that matters most to you and find a product that fits your needs.

If any of you find yourself facing fleas this fall, we do offer a flea bath that should kill the infestation on your dog, and products to help clean your home and repel them. All american made and as all natural as possible.
