You've probably heard we're in for a 🔥major heat wave🔥 this week in Marin (and all around California) so make sure you're prepared to beat the heat, pets included! Dogs and cats can't sweat like humans, so they can be very susceptible to heat stroke when the temperature soars.
Walk your dog during the cooler morning and evening hours to avoid overheating or burns to their paws. Asphalt, concrete, sand, and even packed dirt can get hot enough to burn paw pads. If it's too hot for you to hold your hand against a surface, it's too hot for your dog!
Make sure your pets have access to water all day long.💧 If you take your dog with you when you leave the house, bring along a bowl and water for them to drink - don't make them wait until you return home!
And speaking of taking your pup along with you: 🚫NEVER leave a dog in a hot car🚫 - not even in the shade, not even with the windows down, and not even for a very quick errand. A car's internal temperature can become deadly in a matter of minutes in this weather.
If you notice your pets showing signs of heat stroke such as excessive panting, heavy salivating, and extreme lethargy, get them to a cool spot in your home and offer plenty of water. You can also immerse them slowly in a bath of cool water (NOT ice cold water, which can cause shock) to lower their body temperature, and contact your veterinarian.
Last but not least: We're also in a Red Flag Warning, meaning fire conditions are critical, so make sure your go bag - for both people AND pets - is at the ready! Subscribe to local emergency alerts like Nixle and use apps like PulsePoint or WatchDuty to keep tabs on local fires and other emergencies.
Whew! We know that's a lot, but we want everyone to stay safe in this weather, people and pets alike. ❤
