This poor guy was miserable for weeks, we thought he had hot spots and he was itching like crazy.
When a week of antibiotics and topical treatments didn't work and it was getting worse a blood test showed it was hypothyroidism. Who knew dogs could have hypothyroidism and that it would look like an autoimmune.. thankfully my vet knew!

Special thanks to Dr. Sherri Hicks, who had the forsite to do the thyroid test. Only 3 days into the medication and the rash is gone and all the sores are healing.

This also explains why despite my best efforts, switching him to a lower calorie senior food, and trying to get him moving more, he was continuing to gain weight. He should weigh about 65 lbs and he has been hovering vetween 79-82. We used to hike 5 to 10 miles. And I have a hard time getting him to do a mile these days. He was pooping out and now I know why. Time to hit the trails as the weather cools. Happy dog happy dog mom.

It's been heartbreaking the past year thinking he was declining so fast. I wanted him for 15 years. And I was afraid I was gonna lose him at ten. On more than one occasion people have commented on his weight, and I was trying!
He was getting almost half the recommended serving and still gaining. That should have been a sign there, but I chalked it up to old age, poor guy.

I look forward to his energy coming back and having him around for many years to come.

As we were leaving the vet a little girl commented "Is she having puppies?" To which I kindly replied, "No, honey, HE is just a little old and fat but we are gonna fix that."
