Spring is officially here, even with the random Louisiana cold front. As it warms up in the coming weeks, and we spend more time outdoors with our pets, it’s important to be mindful of local wildlife. 🦨
Skunks, in particular, can be a little more active this time of year, and you may be wondering what to do if your pet gets skunked! 💨
Skunks may only spray as a last resort after trying to warn off a potential threat with foot stamping, hissing, or tail-raising.
☝️ Fun fact: Skunks can spray up to 10 feet and can release their spray up to 6 times in a row! 😲
If your pet does get sprayed, DO NOT get them wet!🚫
Water can seal the skunk oil into their fur and make the smell last for weeks — or even months!
Instead, make a paste with baking soda and your pet's shampoo or dish soap. Apply this mixture liberally onto your dry pet and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing off. This method is effective in neutralizing that odor! 🤢🧴
After you've neutralized the odor, keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of irritation or discomfort, and contact us if you have any concerns about their health.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the clinic, not a creature was stirring, not even for one minute.
The holiday cheer is spread with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there.
Lonnie the cat, with his fur soft and bright, was curled up in a corner, snug for the night.
The dogs in their kennels, the cats in their lairs, they all rested soundly, with not a single care.
From all of us here, both furry and bright,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Being involved with the Bissell Pet Foundation, we have had the opportunity to treat many cases that we don’t typically get to see. Each animal is unique and holds a special place in our hearts.
This week, Dr. Kristen's case is Red.
He was picked up by animal control emaciated, unable to walk, and extremely weak. His red blood cell count was very low, and we initially thought it was do intestinal parasites called Hookworms. He was treated for intestinal parasites and received a blood transfusion. Unfortunately, he did not improve. We sent off bloodwork for a PCR test to infectious causes that could be evaluated in his DNA changes.
He was diagnosed with Babesia gibsoni, which is an organism that invades his red blood cells. This is typically spread amongst pit bull terriers and through blood contamination (bite wounds) and, uncommonly, ticks.
His body’s immune system began attacking its red blood cells due to the parasites within. He became very anemic and even neurological due to the parasites within the central nervous system.
After extensive diagnostics to rule out causes for his anemia, we found the underlying diagnosis for his clinical signs. Once he started his treatment, he started showing improvement in huge strides. He went from being underweight and overall weak to running and gaining weight rapidly.
Red is now up in Michigan with the Bissell Pet Foundation finding his perfect home!
Thank you, Mrs. Cathy and the Bissell Pet Foundation for the opportunity to provide the best care to your rescued pets!
