Sensitive clinical pictures nested- viewer discretion advised

Cartel, a 1 year old domestic shorthair, presented to Dr. Emily and our team with a re**al prolapse for the first time in March. He returned multiple times for recurrence. He was placed on deworming medication and gastro-intestinal supportive medication. Cartel was neutered and ended up having a colopexy completed in May to stop the recurring re**al prolapse.

A re**al prolapse forms secondary to the animal straining; either to defecate or urinate. This can be seen both in young dogs and cats. Most commonly, we see this occur alongside colitis, diarrhea, and/or intestinal parasites. We can perform an intestinal parasite screening to assess for parasites.

Treatment involves sedation and properly replacing the pr*****ed tissue. We want to make sure the tissue is healthy prior to replacing. The pr*****ed tissue is usually very red and swollen, leading to the application of dextrose to decrease the swelling. The tissue needs to be kept clean, sterile lubricant applied topically, and the tissue replaced gently. Once the tissue is properly replaced, a purse string suture is placed to keep the tissue inside the body and prevent acute recurrence. The sutures are left in place for about five to seven days. The patient will be on deworming medication if parasites are the cause, as well as a soft, low-residue diet until sutures are removed. Recurrence can happen, especially if underlying causes are not addressed. When recurrence happens, colopexy is recommended, as in Cartel's case.

Thanks to Dr. Emily and our team, Cartel is doing well, with no recurrence since his procedure!

👋 Hey Acadiana!

🐾 The Daily Advertiser is hosting The Best of Acadiana Community's Choice Awards, and nominations are now open! 🐾

🐶🐱❤️Head on over to their website (https://yourchoiceawards.com/lafayette/) and give our clinic all the love!❤️🐱🐶

How it works:
Each year, The Best of Acadiana Community’s Choice Awards recognizes more than 480 businesses and organizations, and we couldn’t do it without community members like you! The awards program starts with public nominations, and from the top five nominees in each category, the voting round selects the finalists and winners.

To nominate our clinic:
• Navigate to your desired Section and Category (Pets) in the ballot.

• In the Nomination Field, begin typing "Lafayette Veterinary Care Center". If it appears on the list, select it. If it does not, complete the name.

• On your first visit, complete the registration and click "NOMINATE."

• Continue to nominate in other categories if you wish. Nominations are recorded as they are entered, and there is no final SUBMIT button.

• On future visits, log in to the ballot using the already-entered function and nominate again up to once a day.

Nominations close on June 24, 2024, and the top five nominees by user submissions in each category move on to voting in August, where winners and finalists are selected.

Thank you for your love and support! We are grateful to serve such great pets and their families here in and around Acadiana!

Recently, Dr. Garrott had the pleasure of meeting Pepper, a middle-aged Australian Shepherd having bloody urine.

Though this was his first time seeing Pepper, she had been treated for multiple urinary tract infections previously, and the symptoms had always returned.

When urinary tract infections aren’t resolving, there is often an underlying problem that allows the bladder to continue to become susceptible to inflammation and infection.
Dr. Garrott decided to use ultrasound and digital x-ray to take a closer look at the bladder. An unusually large amount of radiopaque stones were identified as the culprit. Pepper was taken to surgery, the stones were removed successfully, and her symptoms began to resolve.

Bladder stones, or uroliths, are formed when the density of crystalline minerals is too high in the bladder. They can be caused by a number of reasons depending on the stone type and are commonly breed-associated.
Veterinary prescribed diets and other medications have been used to prevent stones once they have been removed and their type has been identified. Although there have been many advancements in their treatments, bladder stones can be both frustrating and dangerous. If the stones pass into the urethra, they can block the urethra where the pet is unable to urinate. They can also return after surgery if proper preventative measures aren’t taken.

Common signs to watch out for to see if your pet is suffering from a urinary tract infection and potentially bladder stones are: frequent urination, straining to urinate, bloody urine, having accidents while they sleep, and licking in the ge***al regions.

If you think your pet is having urinary issues, please give us a call to allow for a complete urinary workup.

🐾The Playground @ LVCC's June Pawsitive Puppy Play Date is scheduled!🐾

Join us on Monday, June 24th, from 8am to 3pm!

What will the day look like? 🤔
Socialization is key and oh so important to us! Each pup will get their own personal experience of daycare and socialization with our experienced team. 🥰

💟 Their day will start with playing with our pink daycare group.

The pink group consists of our supervising technicians and other dogs that are:
🐶 similar in size (small-medium)
❤️ gentle in temperament
🐕 Adult dogs who have been socialized and are well acclimated in the daycare environment to provide a pawsitive example for puppies learning to play

(These special adult pals have patience to redirect a puppy when that puppy has pushed past acceptable social boundaries. For example, if a puppy is playing too rough, these special pals are gentle enough to tell the puppy to "give space" in a pawsitive way to teach the puppy that this rough play is not acceptable).

In the afternoon, we will have a special play group for only puppies where they can expand that energy and learn a few manners from our daycare technician supervising the group.
Our supervising technician will use pawsitive reinforcement to practice the command "sit" and work on the command "come" when called during playtime.

There are a limited number of spots available, so be sure to sign up immediately with our Playground team!

We can't wait to see our team work with your sweet baby and see them learn alongside our pals! We hope to see you there! 💕

🐶🐱Did you know, here at Lafayette Veterinary Care Center, we offer senior wellness testing for all of our older pals!🐱🐶

Senior wellness testing is a series of tests performed to detect any early or hidden diseases in our geriatric patients.

This test can be performed when our canine or feline pals reach 8 years of age, and can be combined with an annual wellness or completed separately.

If you're intesterested in completing this testing for your pet, please don't hesitate to let our team know! Your pet will need to arrive fasted and spend the day with us (Monday-Friday) in order to perform diagnostics.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns!

💜🐾Please join us in congratulating the Playground Pooch of June, Junebug Theriot!🐾💜

On a hot day, Junebug is the swimming pool’s #1 fan! She enjoys doing her cardio on the play equipment by zooming up and down the stairs.

Fun fact: Junebug doesn’t like to eat her lunch from a bowl. She prefers it on a plate, or even better, straight off the floor!

She enjoys playing chase with other pups, but when she doesn’t have a playmate, she likes to herd and run circles around her friends. This lovely lady has a never-ending energy source. When everyone else is tired out, she’s just getting started!
Junebug is such a polite and fun addition to pink group, and we love having her at the playground!

Caution: sensitive clinical picture nested- viewer discretion advised

Hope presented to Dr. Kristen and our clinic as a malnourished, abused stray rescued by the Bissell Pet Foundation.

The topic regarding part of Hope’s care was the prevention of refeeding syndrome. This was first described during WWII and has since been well documented in human medicine.
Refeeding syndrome is a potentially fatal outcome from metabolic derangements that occur if a severely malnourished patient is refed too quickly.

During refeeding, the depleted body isn’t equipped for the carbohydrates that are present in the diet, and this can affect insulin release. This can result in severe electrolyte derangements with the risk of causing peripheral edema, hemolytic anemia, cardiac failure, neurological dysfunction, and respiratory failure.

The successful management and refeeding of a patient with a history of prolonged starvation involves fluid therapy, monitoring of electrolytes, conservative nutritional therapy, and support of cardiac and respiratory function.

Although it is tempting to feed these patients as much as they want to eat, refeeding syndrome is a life-threatening condition that must be avoided for the patient’s survival.

It’s been a year now, Hope has been adopted by one of our nurses and is living her best life. This case will forever hold a special place in Dr. Kristen's and our hearts. We are thankful for a wonderful team who can provide such great care for both pets and owners through tough cases as such.

Are you interested in taking in a rescue, but don't know where to start? Let our awesome team of Veterinary Doctors guide you in getting that special pal back on the right track of health and wellness, safely and efficiently!

05/24/2024

Meet Maggie, our case for this week's Hospital Heroes!

Maggie, a patient of Dr. Zac's, is a diabetic pup who was diagnosed with diabetes in 2023.

Diabetes in both cats and dogs can sometimes go unnoticed until yearly bloodwork is completed at their checkup. Other times, symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, constant drinking, and constant accidental urination or defecation may occur.

Maggie was a tough diabetic to manage and often varied in her glucose levels from visit to visit, making it challenging for Dr. Zac to dose her insulin.

That is, until, in October of 2023, Dr. Zac and our team placed a continuous glucose monitor called the Freestyle Libre on her. This allowed Dr. Zac and our team to get two weeks of constant glucose readings from Maggie- AT HOME, PAIN FREE, AND WITH NO NEEDLE STICKS!

This monitor is simply stuck on the side of Maggie's chest with adhesive until time for removal, giving her owner the ability to scan it at any time with a reader, or with an app on her phone, to know what Maggie's insulin levels are.

With the help of continuous glucose monitors, we can more effectively fine tune insulin doses. Maggie now feels so much better and has been able to spend more time at home, happy and healthy, instead of coming in frequently for needle sticks to check her glucose levels.

We are grateful for Dr. Zac and our team providing such advanced and supportive care to clients such as Maggie.

Are you concerned about your pet or have any questions regarding symptoms they may be displaying? Give our clinic a call so we can get your best pal in for a visit and help keep them happy and healthy!
