A 501(c)(3) no-kill cat and dog shelter located in Sussex County, NJ. Since 1999. It was decided to tear down the entire shelter and rebuild it.

Father John’s Animal House was founded in 1999, by a small and very dedicated group of people that recognized a great need in our community to help homeless and otherwise unwanted pets. The land and facility was acquired through a few large donations and the shelter was immediately able to start placing animals into loving adoptive homes. The land was originally owned by Father John, a retired mem

ber of the clergy, who took exceedingly good care of his livestock. The shelter was named after him to honor his dedication to the welfare of animals. As the years went by, the maintenance of the facility was becoming more and more difficult. A large fund drive and challenge grant funded the project, and the shelter was rebuilt in 2012. State of the art features have been incorporated, including floors that are impervious to liquid soaking in, ventilation systems to reduce airborne pathogens and illness, and sound absorbing panels, which reduce barking dog noise. Room layout was designed for the comfort and care of the animals, including free-roaming cat rooms and indoor kennel runs for the dogs. The shelter now has the capacity to safely and responsibly place over 500 animals each year. Each animal is fully vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving for their adoptive home. Our shelter personnel work hard to match each adoptive family with the perfect animal to become their lifelong pet. Our overall mission is not only to place animals into loving homes but to promote spay and neuter to alleviate the problem of homeless animals and overcrowded shelters. We value the bond people have with animals and strive to give each homeless animal a family that will love and care for it for a lifetime.

We hope everyone is staying cool - just like the temperatures, our adoptions are really heating up now that it's officially summer! 🤩

How many kittens found homes this week? SERENE & SOL (pictured) are two siblings who got to stay together, and their other sibling UMBRA also went home this week! PHLOX (pictured) was the last of his litter to be adopted, and he went home with an alumni kitty (and several other new friends!). GARVEY was also the last of his litter the be adopted, so we're so happy each of those boys found their homes this week! AJAX & JOY's siblings are available for adoption, but those two were foster "fails" and were adopted by their foster family! Similarly, CLANK & RATCHET never had to stay at the shelter - they went right to foster and were adopted by the fosterer's friend, stopping by only for checkups and vaccines!

But it wasn't just kittens going home - our adult cats RAVEN & WHISKEY went home together this week which was perfect because Raven needed a friend in his new home! What a great ending for these two friends! Young RAMONA (pictured) also went home, and she'll also have an alumni kitty friend to play with, too! OREO (pictured) found his forever home - and don't worry, we have a DIFFERENT cat named Oreo currently with us, this guy is still in his forever home!

We also had some special dog adoptions! CLEO & MARLEY (pictured) came to us when their family fell on hard times, but we were so happy that they were both adopted - together! It's not every day there's a double dog adoption, so we're so happy these girls got to stay together! Cutie MAXIE (pictured) also found her loving home this week, and so did our sweet COOKIE (pictured) whose brother is still looking for his home! We were also so excited for our beautiful mama ELSA (pictured) to get her second chance at a forever home this week - but her daughter Anna is still waiting!

This was an incredible week for adoptions! Not only did a dozen animals find their forever families, but some of those pets had been waiting quite some time...

Did you know we currently have over 30 kittens in foster?! They'll be ready for forever homes soon, but there are a few at the shelter now who are ready! Like the rest of CORONA's (pictured) siblings, who watched as she found her forever home this week! LUNA & SALVIA (pictured) weren't from the same litter, but they'll be siblings now in their forever home! Our bonded pair of "teenagers" AUTUMN & PIPER (pictured) were so excited to finally find their home together! We are so happy these sweet girls get to stay together forever! And don't forget about our sweet adult cats for adoption, like DENVER (pictured) who found his loving family this week!

It's the one you've been waiting for - our latest kennel princess VALKYRIE (pictured) finally found her family!! She's been home just under a week and is already going on adventures and snugging on the couch with her people. We are so happy she finally has the home she deserves! And our Pet of the Week, handsome ZEUS (pictured) found his forever home just a day after his feature! And our girl QUINN (pictured) went home with an alumni, adopted from us a few years ago who needed a friend! Puppy JAKE (pictured) found his forever family, and if you think he's cute you should meet his half sister Anna who still needs a home! And our two little cuties NEYSAN (pictured) and RUBIN (pictured) found their homes this week, too!

It's been a few weeks since Handsome Hans was featured as our Pet of the Week on WSUS, yet this gorgeous boy has had no luck in finding a forever home!

Hans absolutely loves his people! He gets so excited when he sees someone, he always wants to run over just to say "hi"! As a German Shepherd, he's very smart as well. He's about 6 1/2 years old and 78 lbs. The only challenge Hans faces is that he's not a fan of other animals, so he'd need to be the only pet in the home - which isn't a problem, because he wants all the attention for himself anyway!

Every now and then, we get an EXTRA special pet who needs an EXTRA special home. Mona is that pet. She has been through so much, we need everyone to spread the word to find the dedicated adopter who will give her a forever home!

You may remember her story from when she was originally with us - a senior from a high-volume city shelter, she was adopted from there but the dogs in the home would chase and scare her. Determined to give her a better life, her owners brought her to us, and while we finally thought she had her forever home a few months ago, unfortunately it didn't work out, so now she's hoping for one more chance

There's countless reasons why Mona needs to get out of the shelter. She's about 13 years old - after previously spending about 6 months here, we don't want any more of her precious time wasted here at the shelter. She'd also prefer to be the only pet in her home - so of course the shelter, where other animals are unavoidable, is stressful for her.

But the number one reason is that: she deserves it. Mona asks for nothing more than human companionship. As soon as you walk into her room (often before that, if she sees you coming!), she'll come running up to you, crying, asking for some love. Sit with her and she'll put her front paws on your shoulder, then hop up onto your shoulder and take a nap! Her main goal in life is being near people, and if that's not available, a nap in the sun in a cozy bed is second best!

Father John's is committed to making sure it's the right fit and you feel comfortable adopting this sweet senior who has been overlooked for so long! We are exited to be at Sparta Day tomorrow! We'll have a few adoptable pets, but don't forget you can stop by the shelter any time during our open hours to meet them, too!

As kittens come to us, they seem to get adopted just as fast! HELIOS (pictured) was born in our care a few months ago, and his siblings are available for adoption now! LAVENDER (pictured) was one of our flower kittens, whose brothers are still looking for homes, like their sister found this week! Even our older kittens, like 6 month old BOOBOO (pictured) and her young mom SEYCHELLES (pictured) found amazing homes this week! Fun-loving VENUS (pictured) found a home where she can chase bugs to her heart's content! And MERCY (pictured) got his second chance with a forever home this week! We knew our Pet of the Week GOBLIN (pictured) would find his home quickly, and we were right! We are so happy for this sweet boy! CUPID (pictured) fell in love with her new family today, and LUNO's (pictured) new family loves him, even with his side of sass!

We had some incredible dog adoptions, with our special boy BEAR (pictured) finding his forever home this week! He's already doing great, and so loved by his new family! And we knew it wouldn't take long for sweet RUE (pictured) to go home! Everyone was so in love with her, we are so happy for this sweet girl! And our big, handsome MILO (pictured) found his loving home this week, where he'll have lots of kids to play with! And For the First Time In Forever, one half of our Frozen girls mama ELSA (pictured) has a loving home and family!

Today is ! Not that we need an excuse to give our cats some extra love, but we wanted to take the time to show off some of our most huggable feline friends!

We have our big boy LUNO, who's about 3 years old and came to us from an overcrowded shelter where he came in as an owner surrender. He's a ham and loves one-on-one attention, but doesn't mind sharing the spotlight with the other cats, too. Our bonded pair AUTUMN & PIPER have been with us for a few weeks now and still need their forever home! They're super snuggly but also love to play! And PHLOX recently came back from foster where he got to know other cats, a dog and a toddler! Phlox is only one of many kittens we have looking for homes right now.

How is it that our beautiful Mia is still here, even after being a Pet of the Week star!

Mia is the sweetest girl you'll ever meet! She's so friendly and loves absolutely everyone! She was brought to us by local animal control when her peoples' home burned down, but even the tough life she's had doesn't get her down!

Mia is a little over 5 1/2 years old and a little over 60 lbs. She previously lived with another dog and cats, but she hasn't been the biggest fan of other dogs since coming to us. We will be at Wantage Day tomorrow (one of many "days" we plan to be at this summer!) where you can learn about our adoption process, and meet a few pets! It looks like it will be just as beautiful as today, a beautiful day for adoptions!

With so many kittens coming to us, they're also finding forever homes! Siblings AARON (pictured), TIMOTHY (pictured) and DENISE (pictured) each found homes! And KEVIN & ANAKIN (pictured) were lucky enough to find their home together! It's often best for kittens to be adopted in pairs, so we're happy these brothers got to stay together! We also said "So Long, LONDON" (pictured) who found her forever home this week, as well as sweet SESAME (pictured) who went home with one of our wonderful volunteers! And YENNIFER (pictured) who was shy and hid here at the shelter walked right into the carrier to go to her forever home!

Our sweet girl SHADOW had been through so much in her young life, so we were excited for her to find her forever home this week! And siblings JOSE (pictured) and PEPE (pictured) each found their homes this week as well! Pepe went home with a volunteer, who fell in love while on her weekly walk and had to add him to the family!

Where are our orange cat lovers at!? We have three lovely gentlemen looking for homes!

Apricot (first pic, lighter orange with white) and Denver (second pic, darker orange with white) both came to us from an overcrowded shelter, where they were part of a TNR program. But they were too friendly to return outside! They're both pretty relaxed, but Apricot is more picky with his cat friends than Denver. Then there's Mercy, the solid orange, who is always making us laugh with his antics!

Keep an eye out because mom may be getting food, and a kitten’s best chance of survival is with mom! What an incredible time we had at Pet Lovers Fest! If you didn't get a chance to go, check out our posts from that day to see the Peanut Butter Eating Contest and photos of all the fun! Events like this help us continue the lifesaving work we do - like for these animals who were adopted this week!

The entire "Twilight" litter of kittens, ALICE (pictured), BLAKE (pictured), EDWARD and JASPER (pictured) met their new families at kitten yoga at Pet Lovers Fest! Shout out to Rooted Yoga NJ for helping them on their journeys to their forever homes! MOLLY JEAN and ZIGGY (pictured) are two more siblings who found their loving homes this week! HOUDINI (pictured) was the star of the Cat Cafe, where we enjoyed treats made by - and he went to his forever home not long after! Our sweet girl MIMZY (pictured) also found the perfect home for her this week!

We were so excited that YVONNE (pictured) finally found the most wonderful forever home this week! We know she's getting so much love already! And our sweet DESIREE (pictured) found her second chance in a forever home this week! LOLA (pictured) also found her forever home this week - she was only with us for a week before finding her family!

Two is always better than one when it comes to kittens - and the same is true for our "older kittens" who are 6 months old, Piper and Autumn!

These sweet sisters are looking for a home together! They were born to a feral mom and someone was able to take them in to help raise them, but wasn't able to keep them long term. They are practically inseparable! They play together, sleep together, and just love each other so much! They're so sweet, we know you will, too.

Who's that handsome boy? It's Bear!

Bear is just under 7 years old, and as you can see, is a very happy boy. He's also a very silly boy - he's always making us laugh! Bear is about 66 lbs of love - just look at that sweet face, he just wants to say hi!

Bear would love an adopter who knows his breed. He does have allergies, which is common for the breed, which we are helping him with. His adopter will need to keep on top of this so he can always be looking and feeling his best!
