A 501(c)(3) no-kill cat and dog shelter located in Sussex County, NJ. Since 1999. It was decided to tear down the entire shelter and rebuild it.

Father John’s Animal House was founded in 1999, by a small and very dedicated group of people that recognized a great need in our community to help homeless and otherwise unwanted pets. The land and facility was acquired through a few large donations and the shelter was immediately able to start placing animals into loving adoptive homes. The land was originally owned by Father John, a retired mem

ber of the clergy, who took exceedingly good care of his livestock. The shelter was named after him to honor his dedication to the welfare of animals. As the years went by, the maintenance of the facility was becoming more and more difficult. A large fund drive and challenge grant funded the project, and the shelter was rebuilt in 2012. State of the art features have been incorporated, including floors that are impervious to liquid soaking in, ventilation systems to reduce airborne pathogens and illness, and sound absorbing panels, which reduce barking dog noise. Room layout was designed for the comfort and care of the animals, including free-roaming cat rooms and indoor kennel runs for the dogs. The shelter now has the capacity to safely and responsibly place over 500 animals each year. Each animal is fully vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving for their adoptive home. Our shelter personnel work hard to match each adoptive family with the perfect animal to become their lifelong pet. Our overall mission is not only to place animals into loving homes but to promote spay and neuter to alleviate the problem of homeless animals and overcrowded shelters. We value the bond people have with animals and strive to give each homeless animal a family that will love and care for it for a lifetime.

It’s time for our weekly adoption post! ❤️🐾

We knew we were headed into a week of successful adoptions when our girls Aggie and Allie were adopted at the same time! Aggie and Allie came to us together as strays from Virginia and we are so happy they left the shelter at the same time 🥹

Elvis was adopted next! Elvis was also a stray that came to us after suffering a major leg injury. His injury resulted in his leg having to be amputated, yet he still remained one of the happiest dogs at Father John’s 🫶🏻

The rest of the week was full of cat adoptions 😻 Peanut found her forever home first! Peanut came to us a stray. Although she’s spent some time living outside, she quickly adjusted to inside life. We are so happy she’ll have an endless supply of cuddles!

Peanut was followed by the cutest bonded pair, Anni-Frid and Sunset! They are the most compatible kittens and we’re excited that they will continue to grow up together!

To no surprise, Cass went home next! Cass is one handsome and outgoing boy. He’ll make the perfect cuddly buddy this winter 🤍

Pennywise went home next! She is one of our famous clown kittens and we don’t doubt that she’ll make the silliest addition to her new family 🤩

Amor and Bebe came to us as no fault of their own. They ever brought to the shelter after their owner left the country and didn’t return. Our hearts feel full knowing they have found a home together 🐈‍⬛

Lastly, Damien and Elvira were adopted by their loving foster family. These two were local strays that came to us bottle feeders. They may be tiny, but they have big personalities! 😊

We’re back with another Thankful Thursday! This time we’re giving a huge shoutout to Dr. Hewitt ❤️🐾

Dr. Hewitt examines every animal that comes to the shelter, manages their preventative health care, and treats any illnesses/injuries. We truly admire how much she loves and cares for every animal she meets! 🥹

Meet Eileen! Eileen came to us from an overcrowded shelter in Virginia at just 12 weeks old. She’s now 7 months old and has been growing up with us at Father John’s. With her beautiful eyes and playful personality, we are so surprised she’s still here!

Eileen thrives on social interaction from people and playtime with other dogs. She’d make a great companion to a family or to anyone looking for a young pup to join their daily walks! ❤️🐾

✨Transformation Tuesday✨

Meet Baby! This sweet girl arrived at the shelter extremely thin and malnourished (see last two pictures). With a proper feeding plan and a little love, she has started to gain the healthy weight she’s been needing!

We are so amazed at the transformation she’s had in just a few weeks. We can’t wait to watch Baby continue to flourish in a loving home! 🥹

Despite being our longest resident, he remains so affectionate, friendly, and hopeful he’ll find his forever home. 🥹 You can’t help but laugh at his silly personality and big pittie smile!
