Father John’s Animal House was founded in 1999, by a small and very dedicated group of people that recognized a great need in our community to help homeless and otherwise unwanted pets. The land and facility was acquired through a few large donations and the shelter was immediately able to start placing animals into loving adoptive homes. The land was originally owned by Father John, a retired mem

ber of the clergy, who took exceedingly good care of his livestock. The shelter was named after him to honor his dedication to the welfare of animals. As the years went by, the maintenance of the facility was becoming more and more difficult. A large fund drive and challenge grant funded the project, and the shelter was rebuilt in 2012. State of the art features have been incorporated, including floors that are impervious to liquid soaking in, ventilation systems to reduce airborne pathogens and illness, and sound absorbing panels, which reduce barking dog noise. Room layout was designed for the comfort and care of the animals, including free-roaming cat rooms and indoor kennel runs for the dogs. The shelter now has the capacity to safely and responsibly place over 500 animals each year. Each animal is fully vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving for their adoptive home. Our shelter personnel work hard to match each adoptive family with the perfect animal to become their lifelong pet. Our overall mission is not only to place animals into loving homes but to promote spay and neuter to alleviate the problem of homeless animals and overcrowded shelters. We value the bond people have with animals and strive to give each homeless animal a family that will love and care for it for a lifetime.

Meet Sadie!! This sweet senior girl was adopted as a puppy back in 2013 and has found her way back to us - through no fault of her own! ❤️🐾🐶

Now around 12 years old and 54lbs, Sadie may be a little thin, but we’re helping her get back to a healthy weight. Don’t let her age fool you, she still has the energy to play, go on adventures, and flash that silly, lovable face that’s impossible not to smile at! 🤗

Sadie is super friendly, loves meeting new people and other dogs, and would be so happy to find a cozy home to spend her golden years in.

It was a week full of happy tails and endings!

Sweet momma Disney made the long journey from Virginia with her two puppies, and now all three have loving homes, her pups zoomed out first, and it was only a matter of time before Disney found a place to land! Our big boy Hans, the lovable German Shepherd, was thrilled to head home, and we know Chev is already filling her new family's days with fun and laughter. Social butterfly Vivian won everyone over and is sure to thrive, and wrinkly-faced Kado trotted out with that unforgettable bulldog grin. We’re also celebrating the adoptions of playful pups Pablo and Pauline, who are now growing up surrounded by love. Here's to a week of new beginnings for our dogs! 🐶🦴🐕‍🦺

It was a purr-fect week for our feline friends as well! A whole crew of kittens found their forever homes - Reed, Mimi, Cash, Gregory, Petal, Pistil, Sepal, David, Jonny, Castor, Thunder, Robin, Siobhan, and Lucien are off to start their new adventures with families who already adore them. We also celebrated some extra special adult cat adoptions: Henry, who came to us after living in a home with 97 other cats, is finally getting the quiet love he deserves. Wisteria and Garlen, from a home with 40 cats, are starting fresh in cozy new places. And after patiently waiting, sweet Gouda, a shelter favorite, finally went home. We’re so happy for each and every one of them! 🐾 🐱🧶

Thanks to everyone who opened their homes to these wonderful pets! 🏡

Oh, to be a cat with no Monday scaries…😴💭🛌🐱

Cipher has mastered the art of lounging on a windowsill, soaking in the sun without a care in the world. However, behind those sleepy eyes is a shy boy who’s been through a lot!

Cipher and his friend Rune came to us after their owner passed away. We don’t know much about his past, but we do know Cipher is still unsure about all of the changes in his new chapter!

Cipher is still learning to trust, but we believe with time, patience, and a gentle heart, he’ll come out of his shell! 🤍🥹🐾

Meet Pepe!! 🐾❤️🐕‍🦺 Yes, he’s a purebred Chow Chow - and a handsome one at that! This 4.5yr old, 50lb sweetheart came to us all the way from Virginia after his owner passed away.

He’s now looking for a second chance at love. True to his breed, Pepe is a bit independent, but he’s also very sweet! He’s done well with other dogs, he even lived with one in his previous home.
