Hilary Briggs
Hilary is originally from Indianapolis, but has been living in the Lafayette area since June of 2011. She graduated from Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She attended Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for two years before deciding to explore other careers with animals, particularly in relation to animal behavior. She received her certification in Canine Massage Therapy through the Brandenburg Massage Therapy Canine Massage Therapy Training & Certification Program. She has worked at a couple local kennels with off-leash dog play programs as well as a local veterinary clinic since moving to the Lafayette area; she also worked for a veterinary hospital in Indianapolis throughout her undergraduate career. All totaled, she has worked with animals in some capacity for 10 years, but has had a passion for animals her entire life. She is owned by a feisty Jack Russell Terrier named Penelope and a goofy Yorkshire Terrier named Howie. Patrick Holland
Patrick has been working with animals for the past 6 years and in that time has learned a great deal about behavior and how to effectively implement force-free training techniques. Patrick graduated from the Animal Behavior College with a Certificate of Achievement in Dog Training in 2012; he then went on to earn his Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) certification through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) in 2015. He also graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences with a concentration in Companion Animal Behavior in 2014. Patrick worked at a local kennel with off-leash dog play and was an independent contractor for another private pet sitting business. Patrick is owned by a mixed breed pooch named Miley and a senior Border Collie named Bear. Patrick and Hilary met while working at a local kennel with an off-leash dog play program. They started as coworkers then quickly became friends. They realized that they both had a passion for animal behavior and educating others on how force-free methods could positively influence animal care. While both Patrick and Hilary had individually dreamed of having their own pet care businesses, they realized together that their dream could be achieved, thus Pawsitive Pets, LLC was born!

🎆 Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips from Pawsitive Pets🐾

The Fourth of July is a time of celebration, but it can be a stressful and dangerous time for our furry friends. Here are some essential tips to ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable during the festivities:

1. Keep Pets Indoors: Fireworks can be terrifying for pets. Keep them inside in a safe, quiet room to reduce stress and prevent them from running away.

2. Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy area with their favorite bed, toys, and maybe some calming music or white noise to drown out the sounds of fireworks.

3. Update Identification: Make sure your pets have up-to-date ID tags and microchip information, just in case they do manage to escape.

4. Avoid Fireworks Exposure: Never use fireworks around pets, and keep them away from areas where fireworks are being set off. The loud noises and bright lights can cause panic and injury.

5. Mind the BBQ: Keep pets away from the grill and any human food that might be harmful, such as chocolate, alcohol, and foods containing bones.

6. Hydration is Key: Ensure your pets have plenty of fresh water, especially if they are spending time outside during the day.

7. Exercise Early: Give your pets plenty of exercise earlier in the day before the festivities begin. A tired pet is less likely to become anxious.

8. Comforting Gear: Consider using anxiety wraps or calming collars to help reduce your pet’s stress levels.

9. Know the Signs of Stress: Watch for signs of anxiety, such as excessive panting, drooling, pacing, or hiding. If your pet seems unusually stressed, consult your veterinarian for advice.

10. Stay Home: If possible, stay home with your pets during the fireworks. Your presence can be a great comfort to them.

A Letter from Co-Founder Hilary

I am writing today with news of upcoming changes at Pawsitive Pets, LLC. After nine years of business ownership, I have made the difficult decision to exit Pawsitive Pets at the end of June. This is not a decision I have made lightly, and it has come with many mixed emotions due to my love for the work we do. Ultimately I know it is the best decision for me as the stresses and responsibilities of business ownership have become more than I can continue to bear. I have been incredibly fortunate to have met so many amazing people (clients and employees alike) and wonderful pets who I will dearly miss seeing and caring for as I move on to my next adventure.

While I know this may be difficult news for some to hear, the good news is that not much will change in my absence! Co-Founder Patrick's brother, Carl, will be purchasing my half of the ownership of the business, making Pawsitive Pets a family-owned business as well as remaining a minority-owned business. Carl has been with the company since 2016 and has been a behavior consultant since 2019. In that time he has helped hundreds of clients, provided thousands of lessons, and has been an integral part of our staff development.

Carl has been training with us on administrative aspects for much of this year so that he is well versed in how we run things. To aid in a smooth transition, our management team of Katie & Julie will continue to oversee our daily operations. This means that Pawsitive Pets will continue to provide the same dedicated care and training that our clients have become accustomed to receiving. We don't anticipate any changes in our programs.

I have also been training one of our current employees (who also happens to be Patrick's wife), Babbi, to take over my role as canine massage therapist for the past several months so there will be no disruption to our regular massage clients' services. Babbi has been with Pawsitive Pets for 1 year and will be enrolling in a canine massage therapy certification program to continue to build her education and skill.

I am so grateful for the multitude of opportunities this role has afforded me over the years, and I will continue to treasure the fond memories and new friendships that have come from my time with Pawsitive Pets. While I will miss seeing my favorite furry friends every day, I have full confidence in the level of care and training they will continue to receive from our stellar employees. In fact, I will continue to remain a client and recommend Pawsitive Pets' services to everyone I meet.

I don't like saying goodbyes, so for now let's just say, "see you later!"

Everyone meet Bella! 🐾 Bella is a 6 year old weimaraner who has been working with us since she was a puppy. Through continued walks and training to up keep her skills, Bella has become an ambassador to our ability. We often utilize public places, like The Eleventh House, to work on training in more difficult environments. Bella does a great job in the video of remaining calm and relaxed while out and about!

The warm weather we had today has us excited about being able to do more outdoor training lessons in local parks, downtown Lafayette, and Purdue's campus! ☀️ In the video, Winston, a dog who has previously shown fear and over arousal in public, is seen working on his composure downtown with Patrick during a training lesson. 🐾

Meet Lauren & Milton! 🐾❤️ Lauren, one of our trainers at Pawsitive Pets, has been working on cooperative medical behaviors with Great Dane Milton, and this video shows them working on vaccination prep. Milton has a well established chin behavior, and they’ve been practicing “pinch” and “poke” to emulate a vaccine being given at the vet. We’re so proud of Milton’s progress!

Winston is practicing his manors when guests arrive in his home! 🏠 In this video, Patrick and demo helper, Emily, are seen reinforcing alternative behaviors, such as autosit and checking in, that we want in place of unwanted ones, such as crowding the door and jumping on guests. Way to go, Winston! 🐾🎉

As a company, Pawsitive Pets prides ourselves in continuing our staff's education in many ways, including having them shadow and work hands-on with the trainers to further their understanding and techniques.
