Sydney Airport has a dedicated bathroom for pets, an example of how modern airports are responding to the needs of travelers with pets. This "Pet Relief Area" is an area specifically designed for pets to attend to their needs before or after a flight without having to leave the airport.

Our hearts break for the people, pets and wildlife whose lives are turned upside down and even lost in the Los Angeles Fires.

If you are in that area, but not in an area now threatened, and can foster a dog or cat who has been separated from his or her humans, or has nowhere to go, please monitor your local shelter and rescue organizations pages and websites to see what you can do to help them get through this.

A trusted resource to donate to for the fur babies of the CA fires.

My heart and thoughts are with the people and animals impacted by the California wildfires. The animal welfare community in California is strong and resilient. The state disaster plan considers that animals are an important part of families and communities. BPF’s Animal Incident Management™ team Executive Director Eric Thompson is monitoring the situation and collaborating with other national organizations on the next steps. When California requests support, we will be ready.

Partners, friends and donors have contacted me asking what they can do to help. Pasadena Humane is fielding the immediate response. They have taken in over 300 animals from the disaster zone and their veterinary clinic is running 24/7. The biggest need right now is to support them with monetary donations so they can continue their response. When you make your donation, let them know that is for disaster response. In-kind donations, unless specifically requested, are difficult to manage during a disaster of any kind.

Emotional support
Dogs can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and ease loneliness. Petting a dog can trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and stress reduction.

Physical health
Petting a dog can lower blood pressure and heart rate, making you feel more relaxed. Dogs can also help people recover from a range of health problems.

Companionship
Dogs can provide comfort and security, making them invaluable companions during distress, loneliness, or sadness.

Therapy
Therapy dogs can help people in many settings, including nursing homes, hospices, prisons, and hospitals.

Sense of energy
Dogs have a great ability to sense someone's energy. You might notice your dog snuggling with you more when you're sick or upset.

Some say that animals' energy fields are much larger than humans'.
