Bluebird Canyon Farms is a 15 acre biodynamic urban farm located near the coast within the San Joachim Hills. In addition to supplying fresh produce and clean, value added products to our community the Farm’s highest purpose is to provide hands-on training to diverse groups offering opportunities to learn, plan, develop, operate, and sustain urban agricultural projects. Our educational philosophy

is to share the experience and knowledge of our associates allowing others to learn by doing. The Farm contains both conventional and non-conventional agricultural elements, and was developed according to permaculture design principals. The Site features terraced row crop beds for seasonal heirloom vegetable production, Orchards, Aquaculture/Aquaponic facilities, a poultry Aviary, a research Apiary, biodynamic horticultural supplement production facilities, micro-green and fodder production systems, an all-season greenhouse, a medicinal and culinary herb potager, and myco-culture production systems, and an experimental kitchen known as the “Food Lab”. There are also a number of sophisticated water and energy conservation features built into the site including water harvesting and rainfall-runoff management systems as well as a solar electric infrastructure. The farm has an active ecological restoration project on-going to repair erosion damaged hillsides and restore “coastal sage scrub” plant communities impacted by invasive non-native plant species introduced to the site prior to the redevelopment effort begun in 2010. The Farm hosts the Bluebird Canyon Collective, a cooperative guild of artisans and craftsmen who support projects throughout the area including various regenerative landscaping and ecological restoration projects within the State of California.

Each course will include:
Science & history
Fermentation strategy, technique & procedures
Flavor & recipe design
Health benefits
Kombucha tasting and grazing board of fermented foods
Something to take home! Either a ferment started in class or a fermentation kit to start fermenting at home. Wednesday’s 2-4pm
Course 1: Lacto-fermentation of Nightshades - Oct. 9th
Course 2: Kombucha & Kefir - Oct 23rd
Course 3: Creative Krauts- Nov 6th
Course 4: Fermented Condiments - Nov 13th
Christy Critter
Herbalist, Fermentress & Kitchen Witch
Owner & Founder Blessed Being
Christy began her exploration of ingredients and cooking at the farmers market. Connecting with farmers and small food makers while experiencing the abundance of the seasons has been the core of her inspiration to create. The farmers market is also where she discovered kombucha, which was the catalyst that encouraged her to dive into the world of fermentation, nutrition, and herbalism.
Her creation of Blessed Booch in 2015 quickly evolved beyond kombucha into Blessed Being, a culmination of her life’s journey, focused on nourishing the WHOLE being while connecting and harmonizing with nature. Blessed Being is an apothecary of elixirs, medicinal foods, and botanical skin care.
Christy has apprenticed at The Gaia School of Healing with both Sage Mauer & Marysia Miernowska, as well as Sage Country Herbs with Shana Lipner.

What a beautiful and thoughtful event to organize. Wished we all could go!

Tree of Life will again be hosting the Seri People who will be displaying and selling their artful wares on Saturday, June 15, 2024, 9am to 4pm.

The Seri, whose indigenous name is Comcáac, live on a remote stretch of the Sonoran coast along the eastern shores of the Gulf of California, adjacent to the largest gulf island, Isla Tiburón. They have inhabited these ancestral lands for centuries and encountered many of the same 16th-century explorers who ventured westward across the Gulf into “las Californias,” including Francisco Coronado and Padre Eusebio Kino. Amazingly, there are records, both prehistoric and historic, of the Seri also crossing the Sea of Cortez in their reed canoes (balsas) to visit the eastern shores of Baja California.

The Comcáac language is known as an isolate, related to no other language in the world. The language is alive and well, and is today being taught in the schools. Most of the Seri are bilingual, speaking Cmiique iitom, as well as Spanish. Currently, the Seri comprise a community of around 1000 souls. Their homeland is known as a region “where the desert meets the sea.” Their intimate knowledge of both land and ocean is wonderful and unique.

The Seri are famous for their museum quality artwork; baskets, ironwood carvings, necklaces of shell and bone, and imaginative dolls. Their baskets are made from a single desert species, limberbush (Jatropha cuneata), the materials sourced, processed and woven by each artist. Some large baskets can be many months in the making.

We have opened the Seri marketplace almost every year (missing a couple during the pandemic) for around 15 years and we are fortunate to have them come again in 2024. With all the travel complications including obtaining cultural visas as indigenous artisans, their ride, their accommodations here, and their extraordinary effort to make the long journey, we never know which marketplace might be part of their last visit to Tree of Life.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a day of cultural exchange and to purchase some really fine indigenous art, while helping Tree of Life revive and preserve the memory of old California.

Soil health is perhaps the most important aspect of a thriving regenerative agricultural operation and microbial biomass levels in the soil may be the single most important indicator of soil health. Soil microbes play a vital role in feeding & protecting plants & improving soil structure.

In January 2024 a microbial biomass (“MB”) augmentation study was initiated at Bluebird Canyon Farms to provide guidance to our soil husbandry practices.

The study involved collecting soil samples from one of our cropping terraces prior to and after the application of amendments. Amendments included a dilute molasses solution vs adding our compost tea known as Flux. Samples were analyzed using an optical instrument that correlates the relationship between light attenuation through the sample and the properties of that sample.

Baseline soil samples were collected on January 18, 2024, at six locations. Amendments were applied to those same locations the following day. Three (3) locations received 10-gallons of a dilute molasses solution (~17 g/l) with the remaining three (3) locations receiving 10-gallons of Flux.

Soil samples were collected and analyzed 47 days later. Results which are tabulated below show MB levels increasing across five of six samples ranging from 100% to 352%. One sample showed a declining MB level, and we believe this sample may have been corrupted. Both Flux and the dilute molasses solution performed equally well. These studies will be continued over the next several weeks to refine our soil husbandry processes.
