Here's an update on Blue Belle, who would probably be unrecognizable to anyone who knew her three years ago. She's a sweet and tolerant girl now who has won over the rest of the pack—myself included.

So...I took in another dog this week. Or shall I say...my son took in another dog that someone must have dumped near his house. "Trip" was scared, hungry and apparently waiting for whoever dropped him off to come back and get him.

It's an age old story that never ceases to p**s me off. I simply can't imagine how someone could be so cold and heartless. That being said...Trip's arrival reminds me that I need to double down on my efforts to find homes for my most adoptable dogs.

It's been an uphill battle over the last couple of years. I've had two failed adoptions and more "if only I could" messages than I can count...and it has left me discouraged. My reaction has always been "they're probably better off here anyway."

But I know that's not necessarily true. I may be meeting their basic needs such as food, water and exercise...but we all know that dogs need more than that in order to thrive. They need to be loved—and there's only so much of that I can spread around here.

I've been promised some help moving forward...which will be essential. There are many days when it's all I can do to keep up with the basic responsibilities here—so any assistance I can get with the other important tasks will be vital.

You can help by sharing my posts when you see them—and if you're in the position to do so—any financial assistance is also greatly appreciated. There's still time to make a donation that you can claim on your 2023 tax return, and we are an accredited 501 (c) 3 non-profit.

Thanks to everyone who has supported The LAST Resort since 2021...I know I'm way behind on sending out individual thank you notes....but I'm sure you'll forgive me having said what I just did.

Just wanted to express my sincere thanks to everyone for all the well wishes about Pogo. On the happier side of things: it's always a proud moment when your pig grows up and moves into his own place.

I awoke this morning with a heavy heart and one less dog bowl to fill after having to say goodbye to Pogo yesterday. It has been agonizing to watch his slow decline over the last 18 months—because he fought so very hard to stay alive right until the end.

I tried to convince myself several times over the last few weeks to end his struggle—but Pogo and I had a pact. The same pact I have with all my seniors: if they’re eating…and if they’re able to stand on their own outside to defecate…and if they’re looking for me and the other dogs—then I will go to great lengths to help them through another day.

Sadly, Pogo was unable to keep his part of that agreement this weekend, which left me no choice but to intervene. I have no way of knowing how old Pogo was…I’m guessing he was close to 15.

He was only with me for a year and half…but I will take solace in knowing he lived comfortably in his final months where previously his life had been harsh. Maybe that’s why he fought so hard to stick around.

I lost Badger today. His health declined rapidly over the weekend to the point where I had made the decision to get him to the vet early this morning to humanely end his suffering. But Badger took that choice away from me when he passed away shortly after dawn.

I saved him from being unjustly euthanized 18 months ago—but I could not save him from the ravages of old age. I take comfort in knowing that he was given a year and a half of life he wouldn’t have had otherwise….and that he left this world on his terms—not mine or anyone else.

Rest In Peace Badger. I only knew you for a short period of time—but I will remember you as the lovable, gentle giant that you were for the rest of my days.

I promised myself I would do a better job this year of finding homes for my adoptable dogs. The time has come to make good on that commitment.

I suppose all my dogs could be considered “adoptable”—my goal is to focus on the ones that I think would be happier in less hectic environments.

And you can rest assured that if I’m posting about them—then they meet all the criteria as it relates to not being a “problem dog.” I’ve accepted the fact that I’m stuck with the ones that would present challenges to a different owner.

I have a couple of senior dogs that I’ll post about in a few days, but I’m going to start with a group of youngsters that includes Phoebe, Thelma, Abby, Brody & Gilda.

If you’re looking for a high energy dog to accompany you on outings and expeditions…then Phoebe would be a perfect fit. She is approximately three years old…spayed and very healthy. Gets along well with other dogs…and I believe would fare well with cats. She’s not aggressive in any way….just a little hyperactive. But I have no doubt that she would quickly adapt to any new situation.

Thelma is at the top of the list of dogs who I think would be happier in a quieter home . She has accepted her place in the pack since her arrival….but I can tell she doesn’t like being an underling to the more dominant dogs that she has to co-exist with. I’m guessing that she’s around four to five years old…and you can see a little of Rottweiler coloring in her fur…but she’s a medium sized dog that weighs around 40 pounds.

Abby looks like she might have come from the same litter as Phoebe…but they came to me at different times from different locations so I know that they’re not related. And while Phoebe is confident and assertive…Abby is a little timid and shy. She would do better in a situation where she was the only dog or possibly paired up with a male. She too is not aggressive, spayed and very healthy.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Brody is “Service Dog Smart.” It will break my heart to see any of them go…but particularly Brody. He’s a black lab that tries so hard to please me—and I’ve made great progress in training him with only a minimal amount of effort. The way I see it…whoever would end up adopting him should consider themselves lucky to be given the gift of a wonderful dog. He’s an intact male about two years old..also in very good health. There are times when I wish he was my only dog…and I know that I’m just being selfish if I stand in the way of him realizing his full potential with a loving family.

Gilda came to me as a special needs dog along with her sibling Gene. She’s a German shepherd that I’m guessing is between two and three years old. Both of them were basically feral when they were rescued by Fort Worth Animal Services in 2021. But while Gene still requires intensive care…Gilda is reaching a point of maturity and acclimation where I would feel comfortable in her being adopted. She is very playful and gets along well with all of my other dogs. She too is spayed—and other than the deformity of her tail—is in overall good health.

You can contact me here on FB or on the LAST Resort website at www.lastresorttx.com if you want to know more. There will be a small adoption fee, and I will help with the travel arrangements for anyone living outside of my immediate area. Thanks for reading this…please share it with anyone that you think might have an interest.
