Crew does a happy dance for his new favorite ball!
I'm very proud of Rawlings for being able to hold a stay with all of my goofy distractions. Great job buddy!
Down stays are an extremely useful behavior for everyday life that can be used in any situation. Phoebe is one of our weekly students. Through consistent training, she has developed a phenomenal down stay even around one of her most loved toys, tennis balls!
How?
Dogs will do whatever they find most rewarding, we teach them the behavior of laying down and “staying” grants them the best rewards!
Say hi to Georgie!
Today we shaped a new behavior with Georgie, “paws up.” As with any behavior learned through shaping we reward success in the smallest amounts towards the final goal. In this demonstration, we start by first rewarding a look, we then increase the criteria till we get a sniff, increase again till we get a paw, until you get two paws, and jackpot. Once the dog is offering this behavior you can start adding a que to it. This skill is useful in developing rear end awareness, which can lead to a multitude of other skills.
Way to go Georgie!
Does your dog like to play tug?
Play with them ‼️
Tug is a great way to teach a “drop it” and “take it” and help reinforce “leave it”.
You see me entice Maple with it, encourage her to play with it, notice this toy is not left out to chew, it is only out when we are playing with it.
If your dog gets over zealous it’s time to stop, the play is very reinforcing so remember to use it when your dog is displaying the correct behaviors. Ask them to do something before they get what they want, then reward them with a little play.
Crate Games
A little demonstration of making crate work fun with Frank the Cockapoo, rewarding inside the kennel, building duration with calm behavior when the door is closed and the crate cover is down.
You see him think and offer an unwanted behavior (jumping on the kennel) 🚫
In response to this event I removed myself from the situation, this is viewed as a negative punishment to an unwanted behavior. Since he likes me a lot, the removal of myself is the negative (taking something away), since we are trying to lessen the chance he offers this behavior it is known as “punishment”
In positive reinforcement we add something the dog likes (treat, toy, praise) to strengthen a behavior and make it more likely to be repeated.
Remember to reward the right behavior! Ignore or susbstitue an alternate behavior to unwanted behaviors. Whatever you do, make it fun for your dog. 😊
