Pupdate: Check out this brave puppy investigating the lake like it's no big deal!!
Just as I predicted and hoped, the next time we came to the lake Cascais was so much more comfortable near the water.
She explored at her pace while I offered support and provided back up and encouragement when she needed it.
She took it from there and learned the water isn't so scary, even though it moves weird and makes some strange noises sometimes.
Good job, Cascais! πͺπ

Help your puppy feel safe so they can be brave.
Cascais is learning all about the sight, sounds, and smells of the lake today!
You can see she is a little nervous to approach the water's edge, but if I am patient and give her the time, space and support she needs to approach and retreat on her own, she will build confidence around new places and things.
Right after this we had a little play session to cap that experience off with an exclamation point and help her associate the water with good feelings.
Sometimes training doesn't look like training at all, but experiences like these are so important for young puppies.
Cascais felt safe and supported in this moment, so she decided she could be brave and check out the moving water.
I didn't lure her toward it or throw treats near it. I simply sat with her while she processed the scene and explored.
We will go back again soon and explore the lake and I bet she will feel even more brave the next time we are there.
Help your puppy feel safe so she can be brave! It is easier than you think. :)
