Canine the Great

Canine the Great If you have tried methods to stop the barking and lunging but things are just getting worse, you need more than a plan - you need a coach.

I help dogs and dog parents who are struggling with barking and lunging have relaxed and safe walks together.

Being comfortable in the crate and practicing good crate manners are essential skills for your puppy.

It takes practice and consistency, but it all pays off - especially for summer road trips!

And, that is not only for the car ride. Most hotels require that your puppy or dog be in a crate when you are not in the room with them.

Stay ahead of the game and make life easy for you and your puppy by practicing these skills early.

Cascais is starring in this episode of "puppy waits patiently in the crate after the door is opened until she hears the release word."

And, she rocked it. 🀘

Pupdate: Check out this brave puppy investigating the lake like it's no big deal!!

Just as I predicted and hoped, the next time we came to the lake Cascais was so much more comfortable near the water.

She explored at her pace while I offered support and provided back up and encouragement when she needed it.

She took it from there and learned the water isn't so scary, even though it moves weird and makes some strange noises sometimes.

Good job, Cascais! πŸ’ͺπŸ•

What are your dog training goals this week?

One of mine is to take a trip to the lake with Cascais to give her another opportunity to explore the water and build her confidence!

Stay tuned because I think we are going to witness a brave and confident dog emerging from puppyhood. πŸ’ͺπŸ•

Cascais is learning all about the sight, sounds, and smells of the lake today!

You can see she is a little nervous to approach the water's edge, but if I am patient and give her the time, space and support she needs to approach and retreat on her own, she will build confidence around new places and things.

Right after this we had a little play session to cap that experience off with an exclamation point and help her associate the water with good feelings.

Sometimes training doesn't look like training at all, but experiences like these are so important for young puppies.

Cascais felt safe and supported in this moment, so she decided she could be brave and check out the moving water.

I didn't lure her toward it or throw treats near it. I simply sat with her while she processed the scene and explored.

We will go back again soon and explore the lake and I bet she will feel even more brave the next time we are there.

Help your puppy feel safe so she can be brave! It is easier than you think. :)

Summer days and the simple pleasure of a nice shady spot in the grass from which to watch the world go by...

Cascais is learning to be comfortable and confident out in the world. Some of the best training often doesn't look like training at all!

Giving puppies the time and space to explore at their own pace helps them build a library of positive experiences from which to draw throughout their life.

When it comes to socialization, you cant go too slow, but you can definitely go too fast! Take it easy and stop often to sniff and play. It will all pay off for you and your puppy as they grow up!

Puppy, meet your world!

From about 8 to 16 weeks of age, your puppy is experiencing a critical time in their development.

As puppies get older, they become more cautious when faced with new experiences, so getting out in the world as early as possible is really important.

Socialization is about so much more than just introducing your puppy to other dogs or people.

The ultimate goal of socialization is to get your puppy comfortable with all of the things they are likely to experience throughout their life.

Make time to seek out new and different experiences with your puppy. Allow them to explore at their own pace and support them throughout.

Every new and positive experience your puppy has will help them grow into a confident companion.

Is your puppy over the top? Restless? Always into something she shouldn't be?

Is she getting what she needs every day?

You already know that puppies need food & water, exercise, and sleep. But, maybe you didn't know that there are many ways to increase the quality of how those basic needs are delivered, resulting in a happier, easier-to-live-with companion. Relatively - she is a puppy, after all!

First, put all of those daily necessities into a routine, and include plenty of potty breaks (every 30 minutes at first) in the schedule.

Then, increase the quality and complexity of your puppy's food delivery and exercise through enrichment feeders, training sessions, and fun, interactive games that you play together.

Walks are great, and playing fetch is fun, but those are just two activities you can engage in with your puppy. Switch it up and get creative, and your puppy will feel happy, satisfied, and ready to settle down for a nap.

Now that she is ready to settle, provide your puppy with a quiet and cozy place to rest. She needs up to 18 hours of sleep every day!

Improving the quality of just a few things in her routine, like encouraging her to use her nose and brain when eating, will help your puppy be less bored, help her get more quality rest, and make a world of difference in how she behaves every day.

**Satisfied puppies are easy to love.**

Building confidence in your puppy is an essential part of raising a well-adjusted dog. But how do you do that when he is a little bit (or a lot) cautious when out in the world or even at home?

Consider this:

When your puppy first comes to live with you, his whole world turns upside down in an instant! He is all of a sudden separated from his brothers, sisters, momma dog, and human family that have been with him since the moment he was born.

He needs to learn to feel safe in his new home with you, and he needs to know that you've got his back so he can be comfortable when he is out in the world exploring and when he is left at home alone in the future.

It won't happen overnight, but your puppy will naturally become more independent as he develops a secure relationship with you.

To help develop that relationship, be present and engaged when you play with him. Play some tug together or do some sneaky training by giving him a tasty treat every time he looks up into your eyes (this will turn into the "watch me" cue as he gets older!). Interact with him - don't be a boring, passive playmate - be fun and engaging!

Explore new objects and locations, but don't push him into situations when he is cautious. Give him the time to explore, and gently encourage him with some praise and interaction.

Rescue him from situations where he is afraid. Don't leave him to "face his fears" without backup. If you're out exploring together and your small puppy puts his paws up on you when a larger dog rushes over to him, lift him into your arms so that he feels safe and knows you will always protect him.

Don't force him to be alone at first. Being comfortable alone is a skill that you can teach him - at his pace.

When you help your puppy feel safe, it will empower him over time to be brave!
