Happy Independence Day!!

We hope you have a fun and peaceful day of celebrating and wish that your pets are calm and not too upset with the fireworks 💥

Please enjoy the city organized events and leave your dogs at home.

Make sure they’re wearing collars with ID tags and that your yard and doors are securely closed.

Close the blinds and turn on some music at a good volume that drowns out most of the bangs.

If you have some prescription calming meds for your dogs from us, don’t forget to give them in good time.
Trazodone about 2hrs prior to dark
Sileo about 30-60min prior to dark

Walk or let your dogs out to go potty well before it gets dark. Sunset today is just after 8pm.

If you are grilling- please DONT give your pets food from the grill. We see lots of upset tummies on the days following holidays. Let your guests know this also. Make sure dogs don’t get into the trash either.

Finally it’s going to be a hot one!! Dogs can get heat stroke from being outside in the middle of the day, burned paws from the hot pavement, hot sand at the beach. Be mindful of them playing outside in the sun - give plenty of access to fresh water. Leave them at home indoors instead of risking their safety.

So with all that said- Happy 4th of July from all of us at Baker Ranch Animal Hospital 🇺🇸

Microchipped pets are up to twice as likely to be reunited with their owners when they're lost or stolen.

On the night of July 4th - more pets go missing than on any other date - this is because loud noises can frighten pets and they may try to escape their home/ yard or slip the leash if outside.

Microchipping will soon become essential for any pet traveling back into the USA - due to new travel laws starting August 1st, 2024.

For best results, you need to keep your details up-to-date.

You can usually update your details online, the same way you first registered them. For some databases, updating your details might cost a small fee.

You must update your details when you change...
- Address,
- Phone number,
- Email,
Or when you change any other of your details.
If you've just acquired your pet, whether from a shelter or a breeder, ensure the microchip is updated to reflect you as the owner. Most reputable organizations will be happy to assist you with that.

Is your pet not microchipped yet? Contact us via the link in bio or below to schedule your appointment!

Wait, Watch, Win” guides the community on what to do if they find an underaged kitten. OC Animal Care has a managed intake and will accept any animal that is sick or injured. For the underaged kittens, we first attempt to educate the community and divert whenever possible with kitten kits or by asking the finders to allow those underaged kittens to stay with their mom until they are 8 weeks old or 2 pounds as long as it is a safe environment to do so. Tips and Tricks for Oral Health for your Pets:
1. Choose the Right Time: Pick a time when your dog is calm and relaxed, such as after a walk or a meal.

2. Gather Your Supplies: A toothbrush designed for dogs (finger brushes can be a good option for beginners, both the human and the canine participants), and dog-specific toothpaste (never use human toothpaste as it can be toxic to dogs).

3. Introduce the Toothpaste: Let your dog taste the toothpaste first to get used to the flavor. Praise them for licking it off your finger to create a positive association.

4. Familiarize Your Dog with the Brushing Motion: Gently rub your finger or a soft cloth over your dog's teeth and gums. Gradually introduce the toothbrush, allowing your dog to sniff and lick it.

5. Start Brushing: Apply a small amount of toothpaste on the brush. Gently lift your dog's lips and start with the front teeth, gradually moving to the back. Use circular motions, focusing on the gum line where plaque accumulates. Brushing the outside is most important, but you can brush both the outside and inside surfaces of the teeth, if your dog allows. Gradually try to get all the way to those back teeth where we see the most dental disease.

6. Be Gentle and Patient: Keep the first few sessions short and sweet, gradually increasing the time and coverage as your dog gets comfortable. Speak in a calm and reassuring voice throughout the process. Don’t force it if your dog resists; try again later. Even if they only lick the toothpaste off of the toothbrush the first few attempts, this is a win.

7. Finish with a Reward: Always end the session positively with a treat or their favorite game. This reinforces good behavior and makes future brushing sessions easier.

8. Make it a Routine: Aim for daily brushing, but even a few times a week can significantly benefit your dog’s dental health.

Regular professional cleanings typically involve an initial exam followed by a separate appointment for the procedure, ensuring a thorough assessment and safe anesthesia administration. Dental X-rays play a critical role during dental procedures, allowing vets to assess the teeth, crowns, roots, and underlying issues beneath the gums.

Sometimes, tooth extractions may be necessary to treat painful dental issues and prevent further harm. Anesthesia is critical for a safe and thorough dental cleaning, ensuring detailed examinations and the pet's safety during the procedure. Veterinarians conduct thorough pre-surgical evaluations, including lab work and physical examinations, to minimize any risks associated with anesthesia. Importantly, age is not a barrier to dental cleaning, and older dogs often require more frequent dental care.

*While anesthesia-free dental procedures are available, they are generally not recommended due to their limitations in providing a comprehensive dental examination and the stress they can cause to pets.

Following their Dental Procedure
As you know, your pet underwent a dental procedure, and it is important to keep their mouth clean during the recovery process. However, if your dog had any oral surgery, to ensure your pet's safety and comfort, please do not brush their teeth or give them dental treats for at least one week. Letting the gums rest will help them heal faster and prevent infection. After the initial week has passed, you can resume your dog’s normal dental routine.

Regular cleaning of the teeth, a thorough inspection under anesthesia, polishing the teeth, and possibly radiographs of the teeth will allow a veterinarian to keep your pet's mouth in the best possible health. Anesthesia is important to allow the margin of the teeth under the gums to be appropriately cleaned and all surfaces, including inside and back teeth, to be well visualized. The mouth is washed with an antiseptic. Then, the tartar and plaque are removed with ultrasonic scaling. Next, the surface of the teeth is polished to prevent rough edges, giving a place for new tartar to stick in the future. Finally, a sealant is applied to protect exposed roots. If there are damaged or loosened teeth found, your dentist might recommend removal. This can occur at the time of the cleaning or in the near future. (If the pet owner wants to pursue salvaging the tooth, crowns and root canals are available for pets at dental specialists). Your pet will go home later the same day after it is completely awake.

Dental disease starts with dental plaque, the film created when the sugars of the food are changed to a gelatinous goo by bacteria in the mouth. This quickly hardens into the mineral deposit called tartar. Tartar can harbor more bacteria than f***s and, if left, will pass bacteria into the bloodstream.
The bacteria can lodge on the valves of the heart, spread to the kidneys and liver, and generally cause infection in many different areas of the body. Furthermore, tartar can detach the teeth from their sockets by breaking down the ligaments attaching the tooth. This is called periodontal disease.
It leads to pain, exposes the roots of the teeth, and causes puffy swollen gums and a strong unpleasant odor

Checking In with the Dogtor 🩺👩‍⚕️
Your veterinarian will check your pet’s mouth at every visit. The vet checks for tartar buildup, gingivitis, tooth fractures, mouth masses, and unusual odors. These are indicators of your dog's oral health.

Identifying dental issues in dogs is crucial for their overall health and comfort. Signs of a healthy dog mouth include clean white teeth, calm pink gums, and mild breath.

Here's a list of signs that may indicate your dog is experiencing dental problems:
•Bad Breath: Persistent bad breath can be a sign of gum disease or tooth decay.
•Difficulty Eating: If your dog is reluctant to eat, chews on one side of the mouth, or drops food, it may indicate dental pain.
•Pawing at the Mouth: Dogs may paw at their mouth or rub their face against surfaces if they experience dental discomfort.
•Red, Swollen, or Bleeding Gums: These are classic signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease.
•Yellow or Brown Tartar Buildup: Visible tartar accumulation on the teeth near the gum line indicates poor dental health.
•Loose or Missing Teeth: Teeth that are loose, missing, or falling out can indicate advanced dental disease.
•Excessive Drooling: Increased salivation, especially if it's blood-tinged, can be a sign of oral pain or problems.
•Swelling Around the Mouth: Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth or under the eyes can indicate dental or gum issues.
•Changes in Eating Habits: If your dog suddenly loses interest in hard food or treats, or is eating slower than usual, it could be due to tooth pain. Vocalizing discomfort during eating is a clear sign of oral pain.
•Change in Chew Toy Habits: A sudden disinterest in chew toys can indicate mouth pain.
•Bumps or Lumps in the Mouth: Any unusual growths in the mouth should be checked by a veterinarian.
•Excessive Licking: Licking lips or air frequently can be a sign of oral discomfort.
•Nasal Discharge and Sneezing: Advanced dental issues can sometimes lead to nasal discharge or sneezing.

No Obvious Symptoms at all: It is important to remember that the majority of pets with dental disease do not show any outward symptoms that you will notice at home until the disease is severe. This is why having those annual checkups for your furry friends is so important.😁

The Importance of Dog Dental Care at Home
🦷🪥🐶🐱
Did you know dogs are susceptible to dental problems like cavities, fractures, cracks, and enamel erosion? Just like humans, dogs benefit significantly from regular dental care, and ideally, brushing your dog’s teeth should be a daily routine. Consistent brushing not only keeps dental diseases at bay but also contributes to overall health.
To ease this process, select a dog toothpaste in a flavor that your pet loves and opt for a comfortable toothbrush, like a finger brush designed for dogs. Remember, human toothpaste is a 🚫no-go for your furry friends – canine toothpaste is specially formulated to be safe and effective for them.

While dental treats like Denta sticks and Greenies can be beneficial for maintaining oral health, they can not replace the effectiveness of regular brushing. They should complement, not substitute, your brushing routine.
Similarly, while dental care toys can help reduce plaque buildup, they are not a standalone solution for oral hygiene.

Since the early 1900s, the life span of pets have increased. This is partly due to increasing awareness of how important healthy teeth are to the overall health of cats and dogs.
Every animal should have an examination of its mouth at its yearly physical exam. Dental tartar, fractured teeth, oral masses and cancers, and infections can all be present with little obvious clues to the owner. The pet may or may not show a change in how it eats or chews its food, and usually can't give signs of pain.
This month we will be giving some insight to how important dental health is, how we make it affordable, and ways on how you can help your pets dental health at home.

Dr Barry’s pup Jenga is a short haired labrador mix and needs a jacket in the winter weather ❄️ 🌨️🐕‍🦺
Traveling to the mountains or out of state?
Here are some tips to make sure your fur babies have a blast in the snow
•Wash off paws after walking over salt
•Towels to dry off after playing outside
•Check for ice clumps in the paws after playing in the snow - these can cause pain and irritation.
•Older dogs may be more stiff or sore after playing outside in the cold temperatures. Give them time to warm up and rest after play. •Don’t be tempted to give them human pain meds which can be toxic to dogs
•Build a snowman or snow dog with treats for eyes and mouth

Here are some pictures from last years snowfall ❤️
