The "wait" command is important for safety. It stops the movement forward. "Wait" can be used for many different circumstances. At the door, getting let out of the car, or when there is a danger the pup is moving towards.

🐾 You want your pup moving and bending with you, watching your feet, and keeping to the pace of your walk.
🦴 Here we practice getting the pup to pick his feet up, move right and left, as well as turn all while keeping pace. A dog that is moving with you is watching your feet and paying attention to your body movements instead of getting distracted and reactive to things around him. 🐶

Moving into your dog and having them give to your body pressure is a great technique to keep your dog under control. This takes practice and time to get just right, but your pup will realize that you are going to gain his/her attention through spacial pressure if they do not listen to your voice, nor pay attention to your body movements.
In this moment Teddy charged left as mary went right. This means that Teddy is no paying attention. Mary used her body to push Teddy back into his place, which is by her side, and then continued moving forward. This let's Teddy know that even if he moves away from where he is supposed to be he will be put back in his spot and will never gain ground unless it is Mary's idea.

Leash walking is not about the leash at all! It is more about telling your dog where you want his feet and teaching them to watch your feet.
A dog out in front is not controlling its impulse to move its body forward without you. This tells you that your dog is not paying attention to you, or where your feet are moving.
When a dog is at your side you have more control. From here you are able to step into their space as soon as they are moving too fast and teach them to slow down and match your pace.
This can help you control your dog bettter during times of high stress or excitement.
