Nearly six decades ago, voters passed the first countywide millage dedicated to support . The wisdom of that choice can be found in the incredible parks, programs and recreational facilities that we enjoy today and the countless memories that have been created within them over the years.

In this election, voters cast their ballots in favor of a wonderful new chapter of investments that will preserve that legacy and build upon it with great parks, trails, natural areas and things to do throughout the year located within reach of all residents. We are grateful for the confidence they have placed in us and will be working very hard to ensure their tax dollars are wisely spent and have a lasting impact that will benefit future generations.

Election Day is TOMORROW! ✅When you head to the polls, we ask that you please consider the information below about the millage request as you make your final decision.

Our proposal seeks voter approval to replace the current property tax of 0.35 mills that supports Oakland County Parks with a tax levy of 0.65 mills authorized for a 20-year period ending in 2043, generating an additional $24 million annually for a total budget of $52 million.

Funding will go toward:
• Major capital improvement projects, preventing facilities from becoming aged, outdated, underutilized and costly to operate.
• Park revitalization and development partnerships with local communities to expand recreational opportunities closer to population centers and ensure all residents benefit from our services.
• Maintenance and improvement of regional trailways and the development of water trails on major rivers.
• Increased preservation and protection of threatened high quality natural areas and natural resource stewardship needs like invasive species management, wetlands restoration, tree planting and native plant distributions and nature-based educational programs for students.

Park entry fees will also be eliminated for all OCP parks if the proposal is approved (excluding pay-per-play attractions like waterparks, golf, camping, off-roading, etc.)

The average value home in Oakland County has a sales value of $270,000 and a taxable value of $135,000. This homeowner is currently paying $48 a year to support Oakland County Parks. They would pay an additional $40 a year if the proposal is approved, with a total final cost of $88 a year.

Have you been to Eugene S. Nowicki Park? It's just off of Adams Road in City of Rochester Hills- Government has so much potential. Mayor Bryan Barnett recently went out to explore the undeveloped space.

That's why would love to partner with the city to bring this green space to life. Park revitalization and development partnerships with local communities can expand recreational opportunities closer to population centers and ensure residents of all regions benefit from our services.

This is one of the projects OCP would be able to take on if the millage proposal is passed this Election Day. To read more about the proposal, click here: https://bit.ly/2024_Millage.

One of the most common questions we get about the millage proposal is "Why are you asking for a 20-year millage?"

The answer is because that length of time would allow the parks system to seek bonding for larger projects.

Pontiac Oaks County Park – once known as Hawthorne Park – was always meant to be something special. With water access, nature trails, restrooms, a pavilion and a playscape, it just needed a little extra love to bring it to life.

That’s where stepped in. With our help, Pontiac Oaks has turned into a thriving outdoor space for families. Oakland County Commissioner Angela Powell and Oakland County Parks Commissioner Shanell Weatherspoon visited the park on a beautiful morning to see improvements and investments made over the past few years.

There are more places in that need love, though. If the Oakland County Parks Millage Proposal is passed Nov. 5, funding could be provided to municipalities that want to improve the park spaces for their own residents. Because great parks aren’t just for a privileged few – they’re for all.

The ballot proposal asks for authorization to replace OCP’s current 0.35 millage set to expire in 2029 with a new 0.65 millage that would expire in 2043. If approved, the net 0.30 increased rate will generate approximately $24 million annually. The impact of the net rate increase for the owner of a home with the county’s average residential taxable value would be $40 a year.

During the COVID-19 pandemic – when residents were isolated indoors with few options for fun and fresh air – Oakland County Parks offered free entry to all of its day use parks. That’s because we knew the community needed us more than ever, and many had fallen on hard times amid the international health crisis.

And now, though we’ve been relieved of the dangers of the pandemic, not all have recovered from the financial hardships. We believe visiting a park shouldn’t be cost prohibitive to any guest, because we all deserve great parks where we can relax, play and enjoy the beauty of nature.

That’s why with voter support, Oakland County Parks hopes to offer free entry to its parks going forward. If the Millage Proposal on the ballot is passed, annual vehicle permits or day passes wouldn’t be necessary, allowing visitors the chance to enjoy Oakland County Parks at no cost. Here, Oakland County Parks Manager of Operations Jim Dunleavy explains why the leadership of OCP is so eager to be able to eliminate entry fees.

Just in time for summer, the City of Madison Heights was able to finish renovations to the basketball courts at Civic Center Park in the heart of the city. On a beautiful day, Madison Heights City Manager Melissa March heads out to see how residents are enjoying the new digs. 🏀

The project was made possible with funds from our Community Park and Trail Grant Program. More initiatives like this would be possible if communities choose to support next month.

Following several weeks of routine monitoring, E. coli levels remain high near the Orion Oaks Dog Dock. Samples retrieved from other locations around Lake Sixteen indicate the dog dock area is experiencing consistently higher E. coli levels than other parts of the lake.

OCP staff is expanding sampling efforts. Sampling will increase in the coming weeks and additional locations will be added to help identify any potential sources of the excess E. coli. Staff will follow standard Illicit Discharge Elimination Procedures (IDEP) to locate any suspicious connections to the lake.

We remain committed to the health and safety of all people and pets who visit the park, and to the environment. Protecting water quality throughout Oakland County and the parks system is a priority for OCP and we will work diligently to identify and remediate this issue into the future.

The dog swim dock at Orion Oaks County Park will be closed effective Tuesday, May 7 due to high levels of E. Coli.

Oakland County Parks has been conducting bi-weekly E. Coli testing at the dog swim dock to monitor water quality. OCP is using the same testing standards, with a local lab, that are acceptable for humans.

High E. Coli counts can indicated f***l contamination, posing a risk to both humans and dogs.

The dog dock will reopen once the water tests have improved and show the water is safe for canine swimming.

For your safety:

Ensuring the health and safety of our park visitors and their four-legged friends is a top priority.

Since April 2, has been conducting bi-weekly E. coli testing at the dog dock to monitor water quality. We are coordinating the testing with a local lab to ensure quality and accurate results. OCP is using the same testing standards that are acceptable for humans.

E. coli is a bacteria that is naturally found in the lower intestines of most warm-blooded animals. High E. coli counts can indicate f***l contamination, posing a risk of illness to both humans and dogs.

Routine water testing during fall 2023 revealed high E. coli levels, so this spring parks staff is proactively checking E. coli levels to protect dogs swimming at the dog dock. If E. coli levels exceed safe levels, we will immediately close the dock and re-open it only after receiving an acceptable and safe result.

For the latest updates, including closures, please visit OaklandCountyParks.com or our page.

Thank you for working with us to ensure the heath and safety of our guests and their pets.
