Tuesday’s with Dr. Tasha:

Is your pet feeling itchy? Have you noticed them scratching more than usual? The warmer months of spring and summer are prime time for seasonal allergies for people and pets. It’s common to see dogs scratching more than usual this time of year.

What is canine atopic dermatitis? Also referred to as an “environmental allergy” it develops because of a genetic defect in the immune system. This defect causes an abnormal response in the body to various environmental triggers like pollen and plants. The skin can also be affected, making it more permeable to these environmental allergens

While people typically inhale allergens and develop symptoms like runny noses, our dogs tend to absorb allergens through their skin, which results in a cascade of events that cause itching and inflamed skin. Clinical signs of allergies in dogs can include itchy paws, ears (or recurrent ears infections), armpits and abdomen. Depending on the specific allergen, the itching may be seasonal, and usually begins around 1-3 years of age. In addition to excessive scratching, if your dog is licking or chewing their paws that could also be a sign of allergies or other conditions like bacterial or yeast infections, parasites, food allergies, contact reactions, claw disease or even neurologic sensations from orthopedic problems.

Short term treatment for atopic dermatitis includes controlling the itch as well as preventing or managing any secondary infections that may occur from a defective skin barrier. These therapies can include an array of topical and oral medications.

A visit to your veterinarian can help determine the underlying cause of your dogs symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Tuesday with Dr. Tasha:

The 4th of July is fast approaching and with it brings good food, good company and fireworks. Fireworks that may frighten your pet. The good news is there is a few easy things you can do to help your pet this Independence day!

- put your pet in an enclosed, safe place that they can't escape from.(ex. Kennels, garages, a room in your home).

- Ensure your pet has identification in case they do escape. If you have them outside have a secure leash or harness on them.

- If your pet has severe anxiety during this time of year, talk to your vet about medications that can help.

Have a wonderful week!

Tuesdays with Dr. Tasha:

Summer is in full swing and for a pet owners that means their pets enjoy spending time outside and traveling with them for camping or vacations. Today I’m going to share some tips, tricks and reminders about summer pet safety.

- on hot days limit exercise and outside time for pets. The times of day to avoid the heat are early morning and late evening.

- provide shade and plenty of fresh water for outside pets

- avoid leaving your pet in a parked car without air flow or air conditioning

- watch out for hot pavement and cement, instead walk on grass with your pets. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too hot for your hand to touch it’s too hot for their paws.

- if your pet likes to swim in the summer, look for fresh flowing water and be mindful of stagnant water.

- when vacationing, have reflective leashes and collars with pet and owner identification. Bring plenty of your pet’s personal food and medications in case plans change or an emergency arises.

- if traveling, research requirements for pet vaccinations and preventatives. It’s best to have your pet up date and their records with you.

- if you begin to notice that your pet is not traveling well, talk to your vet about ways to help them cope.

As always, if your have questions or concerns about your pet during the summer, call your veterinary office.

Happy Tuesday!
