Hey Girls! and Dudes! I heard that some people think I have totally changed my program.

Hardly. A lifetime with horses and dedicating myself to learn all I can in the life I have yet to work with horses, has educated me to a higher level of understanding.

I will never know it all. No one on earth has ALL the knowledge. But I know each horse is a teacher. Every mentor is a student. Every student is a teacher. Once you figure that out, you will see that I have not changed my program. I have evolved. I have grown.

As I understood it from Jim Hicks: observe, add or subtract, and refine.

I wish that for you too, in your life, and with your horses. 🐴

Question:🤔

Can I have a show of hands of people who can ride their horse forwards, backwards, left, and right, with just their reins?

No leg cues.
No seat cues.
No energy.
No body language at all.

AFTER a horse is educated to softly follow the feel of the rope/rein is when I'll add other cues.

Why?

Most horses are educated with pressure and release, and respond (or react) off of driving pressure (swinging ropes, sticks, whips, and flags).
This often causes anxiety, anger, assumptions, resistance, hyperactivity, displacement behavior, disconnect, and confusion.

The most important thing for a horse to understand is the purpose of the lead rope/rein. To accept and respond to the guidance and support it offers 100%.

Pictured: confidence in contact feels reassuring to this mare.

Knowing how to communicate what you want clearly, without putting the horse in a position where he thinks he might not survive, is what true horsemanship is.

Horses require a lot.

A lot of time, energy, money, space, care, know how and more. It is not something that just anyone can do because of that.

So it is good to stop and remember what drove us to take all of “it” on to begin with.

That is what will keep us going when a lot feels like too much.
