My son, Michael, is a 24-year old adult with autism. For many years, I have been researching opportunities for him after 21: continued education, work/supported employment programs, life skills training, being a member of the community, sports and recreation programs, etc. I have attended many parent meetings, seminars, and conferences. I have volunteered at schools and other similar organizations. I have served on boards and committees in the hopes of providing support and solutions for these individuals and their families.
Most of these are wonderful organizations, but there are so many individuals that need our help and require many services after they leave school. The support is growing, but it is not enough to assist all of these individuals and their families: jobs, residences, home support, community involvement, etc.
For the last few years, I have continued to ask myself what options my son has after leaving school. I have talked with many parents of those with disabilities - those with children still in school and those with children (adults) who have graduated. We are all asking the same questions and have been for some time. Conditions are improving but not fast enough. In order to ensure that he has a path, a purpose, I was going to have to help him find his way.
I began looking into micro-businesses and how it is sometimes a good fit for an individual with a disability. I researched different industries taking into account both my strengths and the strengths and interests that Michael possessed. Michael has always been interested in food/eating/meal prep so a few years ago, he and I were both excited when he started a job rotation in the culinary program at this school. I was hopeful that might lead to a position at a restaurant. But as anyone working in a restaurant knows, you are on your feet for many hours each day and he didn’t have the stamina.
Back to the micro-businesses - What business could I create that would both suit us? I’ve loved to bake since I was young and became interested in nutrition and healthy eating when I was in high school. Michael has always been interested in what food is being prepared in the kitchen especially for holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. Michael also likes dogs! So I began to research pet (mostly dog) bakeries, recipes, etc. and what’s healthy and not healthy for dogs to eat. Creating a dog bakery seemed like the perfect solution. We named it, “Natural Dog Treats and Bakery, LLC.”
Our first several batches were baked prior to Valentine’s Day and we enjoyed making heart-shaped treats for our furry friends. Soon we will start making our shamrock-shaped treats. And of course, we always have bone-shaped treats!
Our original recipe, Peanut Butter and Oats, has been a big hit! We are developing new recipes and soon will have those available. Let us know if you have any suggestions.
Right now, we are selling to our friends and families through word of mouth. Our website is www.naturaldogbakery.com You can order dog treats on our website or by emailing us at [email protected]. I have also created a page, “Natural Dog Treats and Bakery, LLC”. We would appreciate your support both by purchasing our dog treats (they make great gifts) as well as referrals and passing along our contact information. Thank you! - Nancy Cannon
