Kenya’s bloodwork came back…and it’s not the update that anyone was expecting.
Would you believe us if we told you that her bloodwork’s came back PERFECT? Not only was her physical exam perfect (aside from bleeding from her eyes and ears), but her panel came back clean. Now, on paper, Kenya seems like the epitome of a healthy turtle. But in person, she bleeds from her eyes, ears, skin, and shell. She’s not uncomfortable, not in pain, and is very very alert and active. While it’s amazing that her labs came back perfect, we still don’t have any answers. Our phenomenal exotic specialists have been discussing and studying Kenya’s case for over a week. From here, we continue with testing and performing in-house trial and error with her daily life. Kenya only bleeds when introduced to water. West African Mud Turtles are semi-aquatic, so we’ve had her dry docked, with daily wet docks to prevent organ atrophy. Moving forward, she’s entirely wet docked and we have to document and monitor the changes in her water, caused by her anomaly of a body. We must stay in daily contact with her specialist team during this.
We’ve ruled out a bleeding disorder, and anything that could be shown in blood. Now, we keep testing and documenting. This weekend, we’re taking a trip to a satellite location of The Turtle Conservancy, to discuss Kenya.
🙏 We are so thankful for the support of our community during this mystery case.
