While parvovirus can be a threat to dogs in Florida year-round due to the warm and humid climate, the late spring and summer months are generally when outbreaks are most frequent.
This increased incidence during spring and summer is often attributed to several factors:
- Puppies are born in the spring, making them particularly vulnerable to the virus eight to ten weeks later, which falls into the summer months.
- Dogs tend to be outside more, increasing their interaction with other animals and potentially exposing them to contaminated f***s in places like parks, beaches, and kennels.
- It's important to remember that parvovirus is highly contagious and can survive in the environment for months, sometimes even longer in shaded, damp areas. Therefore, even outside of these peak months, vaccination and good hygiene practices are crucial to protect dogs from infection.
