Do you ever wonder what happens to your pet when you drop them off for surgery? We know it can be a stressful time because of that we would like to give you a quick glance into a surgery day and what to expect. Most of our surgery patients will already have blood work done prior to surgery day. Here is what happens after you sign surgical consent forms....
First we will make sure the patient's vitals are normal. This includes temperature,pulse, respiratory rate,and gum color. The doctor will then do a physical exam.
Next we will administer a pre surgical medication to provide a layer of pain relief as well as decrease anxiety.
Once the patient has relaxed they will have an IV catheter placed.
While Waiting for surgery most patients will be placed in a sweater, PJs,ECT. This will assure that they maintain a safe body temperature prior to anesthesia.
Once it is their turn for surgery each pet will be induced for surgery and have an intratracheal tube placed to maintain a safe airway and deliver anesthesia during the procedure.
While under anesthesia every pet receives IV fluids, temperature support including warm water blankets and warm air blankets, and a constant monitoring technician recording vitals and adjusting anesthesia as needed for the veterinarian.
After surgery it's time for recovery! Recovery is just as important as surgery safety. While your pet recovers they will be monitored closely and once they are ready the endotracheal tube can be removed.
Finally comes the best part! It's time to go home. Most patients will be offered food and walked once recovered. Once you arrive to pick up your pet a technician will go over discharge instructions. We appreciate your trust and allowing us to care for your family members! We hope this gives you an idea of what to expect if your pet needs surgery. (The dog used as a model was in for a routine spay and recovered wonderfully. She belongs to one of our summer interns and permission to post was given ❤️)

Is your pet on a prescription diet? Many times we feel bad leaving them out at treat time! We carry treats that are approved for many of the RX diets. We are now carrying a new option available for dogs through hills that are soft baked treats approved for multiple Rx diets including c/d, biome, I/d, k/d, l/d, and w/d. We also carry hypoallergenic treats from both Hills and Royal Canin as well as treats for dogs AND cats on Royal Canin urinary S/O. If your pet is our patient and you have questions about what treats may be right for their RX diet please give us a call.

Between the heat, humidity, and storms sometimes summer can be a hard time to make sure your pup gets exercise. Did you know enrichment toys like puzzles, kongs, lick mats and, snuffle mats can be just as effective as a walk or game of fetch? Mental stimulation tires your pup just as much. Enrichment toys can also be a great way to change up meal time especially for dogs who tend to eat fast. You can replace feeding in a boring old bowl and turn their dinner into an entertaining show 😉

Welcome Nelly Korda and Shipley!!! Their mom fostered an entire litter, but just couldn't part with these two. We can't blame them. They are so cute and their favorite activities include par kor ninja shenanigans and playing with their dog brother Brawley.
