Now's your chance: two new Introduction to K9 Nose Work® classes are starting in Lakeport in September. The first will be on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. starting on 9/18. Or if you prefer an evening class, the second will be on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. starting on 9/19. Each class lasts for six weeks and costs $150. A new Introduction to K9 Nose Work® class will start in Lakeport on Wednesday, September 18, at 9:30 a.m. This is the first of four 6-week classes in the full Foundation Sequence:

Introduction to K9 Nose Work®: 9/18 to 10/23
Intermediate K9 Nose Work®: Exteriors & Vehicles: 11/6 to 12/18
Intro to Odor 1: 1/15/25 to 2/19/25
Intro to Odor 2: 3/5/25 to 4/9/25

These are small classes with a maximum of six dogs per class, and preference will be given to those who intend to complete the full four-class sequence. There will be six-week, standalone, introductory classes offered for those who prefer to just dip their toes (noses!) into scent work.

Our K9 Nose Work® field trip for May 2024 is in the books! It was a cold and rainy day but nine intrepid teams came out to play anyway and had a blast searching a large workshop; a building with offices and a lunch room; a variety of vehicles including a tractor, a water tender, and a flatbed truck; and an outdoor storage area with an unusual collection of huge tires and metal things we don't usually get to search. Thank you to Clear Lake Redi-Mix for yet another fascinating set of searches! We truly appreciate you.

I'm starting a new series of K9 Nose Work® classes in Hopland on Sunday mornings in April. There are four, six-week classes in the full series: Introduction to K9 Nose Work®; Intermediate K9 Nose Work®: Exteriors and Vehicles; Introduction to Odor 1; and Introduction to Odor 2. Here's your chance to get started with no waiting! Two spaces have become available in the Introduction to K9 Nose Work® class starting on Wednesday, February 28, at 9:30 a.m. at the Clear Lake Grange in Lakeport. This is the first class in the four-class K9 Nose Work® Foundation Sequence. There are no prerequisites and dog-reactive dogs are welcome as the dogs never come in contact with each other. All you need is a dog with a nose and the desire to see just what your best friend can do with their very own superpower!

In Dr. Nathan Hall's newest publication, he shows that contrary to expectations, Pugs significantly outperformed German Shepherds in odor detection tasks. Greyhounds showed a general failure to participate. Overall, the results highlight the importance of direct behavioral measurement of assumed behavioral breed differences.
