Sundance Rescue and Recovery

Sundance Rescue and Recovery We are a Farm Animal Sanctuary that provides forever homes for unwanted, abused, or neglected animals.

We also reach out to the surrounding community to provide assistance for pets and people who are experiencing difficult life transitions. On this site, we live into our belief that educating for environmental activism is Rescue and Recovery ~ of the unwanted animals, of the damaged Earth. Here, you’ll find photos, videos, and links to others who share our mission: heal the Earth and rebalance her for the sake of all life on it.

When we first moved to our farm, there were no fenced in pastures. There were pieces ~ a rusted fence here, strings of barbed wire there ~ but nothing that would work to provide a safe place for our sheep. Yesterday, we finished fencing in our "system"! We have a separated quarantine pasture that can link to the first pasture through a series of gates. That little pasture is connected to a dry lot, common area that leads into the barn. From the dry lot, we have an alleyway that connects into the second and third pastures. With all of these connected spaces and passageways, we can begin rotating pastures to increase the health of our grasses and our animals! I'm loving what we've created, but so far, the sheep aren't impressed. In fact, about half of them won't even look down the alleyway! Apparently, we're into phase two of this building project ~ convincing the sheep that it's a good thing! πŸ˜…πŸ’™

Happy One Year Rescuversary, Sarah!! We don't usually celebrate these anniversaries, but in Sarah's case, we're making an exception. One year ago, we drove home with a very overweight, very confused elder dog who was in tremendous pain. Today, this same 13 year old dog runs with her pack, knows the rules of the house, is no longer overweight, and greets us each morning with a wagging tail! We love you, Sarah! Happy Day!! ❀️

Apparently, it was first things first for Sissy. After he explored just a bit, he went right over to the gate and head-butted Cricket. Then I caught this on video. Let's hope John tightened those bolts well enough! πŸ’™

It's Sissy's Freedom Day! Good morning, everyone! Sissy was calling very early this morning, so we were out right after breakfast and released him from quarantine. He looks quite happy, don't you think? ☺️

Sissy is my newest cuddle bug! He loves having his neck rubbed and his back scratched. He's doing great! Our vet just gave him a clean health check, so he can come out of quarantine in six days.

Three nights here, and Sissy is beginning to learn the routine! Hay for lunch! He (yes, Sissy is a he!) is a real cuddler. We spend time in the morning, afternoon and evening together, and I think he'd stand by me for cuddles for the next 27 days of quarantine if I had nothing else to do! πŸ˜…πŸ©΅

We made it! 30 minutes together, and most of it calm! I'm thinking, though, that we have a new leader of the pack ~ Willa is taking on Bella for top sheep! It's totally surprised me, but it's clearly their call. We've moved slowly, but it's paying off for sure! Tomorrow, another joins us in quarantine ~ Sissy. I will post pictures as soon as I can. For today, though, good work Mary, Cricket, Duchess, Bella, Willa and Bandit! ❀

Cuddle time with our new friends! Less than two weeks here, and they're coming to me for strokes on their ears and along their necks. Bandit has gorgeous brown eyes, and Willa's are brown and green. Their tails wag, and their beautiful eyes slowly close... until I shift in my chair. Then they're jumping back and trotting off. Small steps, little sheep. Small steps. ❀️

Yesterday was shearing day on the farm! The humans had a wonderful day. Katie and Matt, our friends and shearers (Alpaca Barbers) brought their 18 month old daughter (who did a fabulous job!), and the entire experience went really smoothly. We also had good friends visit ~ Cindy and Steve DeRyke ~ which was tons of fun! The pictures below are solely credited to Cindy. She's a marvelous photographer! The sheep's day, though, was not as much fun. For Bandit and Willa, this was their first experience being sheared, and the catch pen came in really handy. They were close enough to each other for comfort, but it gave Katie room enough to shear them both. For the others, the experience wasn't new, but it is always scary. Today, though, is a new day, and while they're all cold because of course winter winds are blowing here, by the weekend when the temps hit 70F, everyone will be a lot more comfortable! Thanks to all our friends for a wonderful afternoon! 🩡

Happy Earth Day, All! And in honor of all trees beautiful ~

"SO....
Catch!" calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
"It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds,
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back." Thank you, Dr. Seuss!

Hello, Everyone! I'd like you to meet Bandit and Willa, Sundance's newest residents! They just arrived and are having all kinds of new experiences ~ they're eating pasture grass, meeting cats, and talking with Duchess, Cricket, and Mary. I'm sure Bella will join the conversation as soon as she's done eating. πŸ˜… Welcome, Bandit and Willa!!πŸ’™

Happy Sunday, everyone! I'd like you to meet Chillie. She's a rescued 7 week old Australian Shepherd -Blue Heeler mix who found herself in neurological distress last night because she ate a mushroom outside that her owners never saw was there. Mushrooms can kill, and they kill fast. Sundance helped save this little girl, but the vet bill was over $1,400 to do so. Please, everyone, spread the word: if you see a mushroom in an area where pets roam or play, pick it up and throw it away! Chillie will recover, but I've known dogs who didn't. πŸ˜”πŸΎβ€οΈ

Wondering what you can do to minimize your plastic use? Here are some ideas about how to think about plastic and how to use it wisely if you have to use it at all.

For most people on the planet, plastic has become inescapable. It’s also harmful to humans and the environment, exposing us to toxins, polluting
