Q1: "What should I do to be prepared for bringing my puppy home?"
1. Buy the dog food that puppy has been eating.
2. Get the puppy crate ready - this is pup's den and security place as well as a training aid for house training.
I recommend getting a crate that will fit an adult dog (60 #) but be sure to put the divider (or spacers) in to cut the area down to just as large as pup can lay down and stretch out in and almost reach the sides - and can stand up and turn around in without touching the sides or top. My puppies are used to keeping their sleeping area clean so they do not want to soil this area.
3. Decide EXACTLY where pup's potty area/material is and put the "target" potty there. My puppies are targeting artificial turf over a tray (you can fill the try with Alfalfa pellets to control smell - available at Farm supply stores). They are also used to being let out of their play area to potty on bare concrete every 2 hours during the day.
