So thankful that big bro and Aunt Jo came to town last week to hang out, see some music, spoil his niece and nephew and help on the farm a bit. We built this sweet front porch on our farmstand! Needs a few final touches but definitely an upgrade.

It is one of my favorite times of year on the farm. As we crawl out of our winter hibernation and work our way into spring all things come to life. Seedlings are started in the greenhouse and the rows in the field are getting prepped. Garlic and shallots have emerged and early spring greens are popping out. It is such an exciting time! So much growth. So much renewal. It reminds us that there is always a new start each year and always a better future to look forward to. Can’t wait to grow all of this food for our community. Happy spring!

Hope to see yall tomorrow for our annual Spring Community Volunteer Day!

We will run from 9-1 tomorrow and folks are welcome to come for as long or as little as you’d like.

Bring gloves and a water bottle for sure, and if you happen to have an extra spade shovel, hard rake or wheel barrow we could use extras of those as well.

We will have coffee and donuts in the morning.

Work will include moving mulch and compost, digging new beds, hauling leaves, constructing fences, clearing beds from last seasons debris and more.

Thanks for all your love and support regardless of if you are able to make it or not tomorrow. We love growing food for this community.

One of the things I really love about our work is the continuous opportunity for experimentation and learning. Sure there are routines followed and repetition, but no day is ever quite like the next. New challenges and opportunities present themselves each day and you are always forced to adapt and evolve. We are constantly trying new tools, growing methods and strategies in hopes of increasing efficiency and making the labor a bit less overwhelming.

This year we invested in the Paperpot Planter system from . This is such an interesting system that will hopefully reduce the time it takes to transplant crops into the field by nearly 90%. It should save the farm a significant amount in paid labor hours, open up time for other tasks and also reduce the stress on our bodies that comes with transplanting by hand.

These are some photos of our recent greenhouse seeding into the paperchains. We did spinach this round and as you can see you take the condensed paperchain, spread it out and fill it with high quality seed starting mix, use the dibbler to make holes for your seed, drop the seeds into the holes and cover with a vermiculite/potting soil mix and you’re on your way!

We are already learning a lot as we work though the seeding process with this new equipment. Trying different techniques and experimenting with a few different crops. We can’t wait to get the transplanter out and get these plants into the ground in a few weeks.
