04/24/2024

All throughout May, Lakewood Pet Vet is offering you and your pup the opportunity to detect 7 different types of cancer before clinical signs even start to show—all with a simple blood draw. This non-invasive cancer screening only requires your dog to fast for 4 hours before their exam.

Dogs are susceptible to many of the same cancers that affect people. According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 6 million new cancer diagnoses are made in dogs each year. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, about ¼ of dogs will be diagnosed at some stage in their lives. Our cancer screening is recommended for dogs over the age of 7 and for dogs 4 years of age or older that have a higher cancer risk, such as:

-Labrador retriever
-French bulldog
-Golden retriever
-German shepherd
-Beagle
-Rottweiler
-Boxer
-Pembroke Welsh corgi
-Mastiff
-Great Dane

The screening tests for elevated nucleosomes (a section of DNA that is wrapped around a core of proteins) present in the blood sample. An elevation of nucleosomes suggests excessive cell death and cells under stress, indicating the need for further diagnostics to definitively diagnose the presence of cancer.

Pets today have a much better chance of being successfully treated for cancer than they did before, thanks to advances in early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. If you're interested in what our cancer screening can provide you and your pup, please give us a call, text, or visit us online to schedule your next visit! ☎️: (562)925-2300

Note: Offer open to new & existing clients. Pet MUST have an exam to redeem our 10% OFF Cancer Screening offer. Pet MUST fast (no food or water) 4 hours prior to exam. Rabies vaccine MUST be current and valid with proof of vaccination. Offer begins May 1, 2024 and ends 11:59PM PT on May 31, 2024.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month! 🪱🦟 Though not as common in our area, cases are slowly on the rise every year, and we recently had two cases for the very first time! Check out Lucky’s treatment success story on our pinned post! 📌

Learn about little Lamont’s treatment journey below:

Lamont 🐶 is a 2 year old Boston Terrier who presented to our clinic for experiencing vomiting and diarrhea at home. Lamont was previously diagnosed with heartworm after being adopted out of the country. His labwork from his previous vet clinic confirmed the positive test. We took full body x-rays during his visit to establish a baseline to monitor the disease. 🩻

Lamont was being treated previously with a course of antibiotics. Dr. Lee started Lamont on a series of steroids to help reduce inflammation in the lungs and blood vessels, caused by the worms before and after they die. 💉A sedated melarsomine (an antiparasitic medication) injection series was begun with hospitalization to monitor Lamont’s progress and check for any side effects. With this type of strong medication, it’s important to keep a watchful eye.

On Lamont’s follow up appointment, he took a heartworm microfilaria (baby worms) test to confirm he is heartworm free. It came back negative! 🥳

Lamont was such a trooper throughout his treatment process! Luckily, the heartworm protocol requires no further active treatment but requires monthly heartworm prevention and a recheck of bloodwork in about 7 months to verify there are no more microfilaria. Lamont is free to get back to his happy playful self! 🐕

If you’re interested in testing your fur baby for heartworm, we’re offering 40% OFF Heartworm Snap tests when you purchase our in-house heartworm preventative all month long! Check our pinned post for details! 📌

Lakewood Pet Vet is offering 40% OFF Heartworm Snap tests during April when you purchase our in-house heartworm preventative!

Heartworms are foot-long worms that live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworms are only transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats.

There are very few, if any, early signs your pet has been infected with heartworms. Heartworm testing for cats typically includes blood tests, radiographs (X-rays), and an ultrasound of the heart. Testing for dogs requires a small blood sample for our Heartworm SNAP test and results are ready in 10 minutes!

It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to become infected with heartworm. The American Heartworm Society recommends year-round prevention for dogs and cats in the U.S. Treatment for heartworm is intensive and costly, and currently only dogs can be successfully treated with drugs while the goal for cats is to stabilize and create a long-term care management plan.

Meet Lucky!
Lucky is a 5yr old black labrador retriever mix who presented to our clinic with intense itching. Lucky gets monthly anti-itch medication which requires a comprehensive annual blood panel with a heartworm test to ensure it is safe to stay on that medication. His test came back positive for heartworm 2 days later.

Treatment started by administering a chewable tablet to kill heartworm larvae. Soon after, anti-inflammatory steroids were administered along with a 4-week course of antibiotics while Lucky received chest x-rays and close monitoring. This was followed by 3 sedated injections of antiparasitic medication and hospitalization. A month after the 3rd injection, a follow-up blood test came back negative! After such a long and intensive treatment, Lucky was happy to go back to his playful active self!

Used blankets and towels are always welcome donations for our hospital; we love hand-me-downs! Just about every patient who comes through our doors gets one to keep them warm and cozy while they spend time with us in the treatment area.

With multiple needed in a day come multiple wash cycles, and they tend to get worn down much quicker than normal. 🧼 Donations are accepted in any condition throughout the year. If you have any extras to spare, please feel free to hand them off to our front desk coordinators ❤️ anything is greatly appreciated! 🫂

Lakewood Pet Vet is offering a FREE MICROCHIP WITH YOUR PET’S SPAY OR NEUTER SURGERY during the whole month of March 2024!

Did you know that spaying or neutering your pet can actually help them live longer and healthier lives? The amazing health benefits of spaying or neutering your fur baby include protection against some potentially serious diseases:

Spaying
🐾Prevents serious uterine infections (pyometra), which are potentially life-threatening
Decreases the incidence of breast tumors, which are malignant (cancerous) in about 🐾50% of dogs and 90% of cats
🐾Spaying your pet before the first heat cycle offers the best protection

Neutering
🐾Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
🐾Prevents testicular tumors, which affect nearly 27% of all unneutered dogs (and are rare in cats)
🐾Reduces their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands (known as benign prostatic hyperplasia) which can cause difficulty urinating and defecating if they become large enough

Pets that are spayed or neutered are also much less likely to roam outside and are therefore less likely to be lost, injured in a fight, or suffer trauma from a vehicle. Our FREE MICROCHIP WITH YOUR PET’S SPAY OR NEUTER SURGERY offer is available to give you extra peace of mind on the rare occasion that your pet wanders too far out of sight.

Call us today to schedule your pre-op exam and learn more about the benefits of spaying or neutering your pet during our March promotion! 562-925-2300

Note: Offer open to new & existing clients. Exam must have been completed within ONE year of the offer; new exams are eligible. Rabies vaccine MUST be current and valid with proof of vaccination (in our records or a valid rabies vaccination certificate). Offer ends 11:59PM PT on March 31, 2024.

Happy Valentine's Day! 💘💝

Here's a reminder on how to keep your day fun and safe for you and your pets 👇

🍫 Keep your pets away from chocolates, sweets, pastries, and anything containing xylitol, which is commonly used as a sugar substitute. These foods can cause life-threatening conditions for your pets mainly affecting their pancreas, liver, and blood sugar as quickly as 10-60 minutes after ingestion.

💐 Keep your bouquets outside until you've double-checked if they're pet-safe. Non-pet owners may not know that common flowers like peonies, daisies, daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, and lilies can be toxic to your pets. Remember to remove any leftover thorns from your bouquets, which can cause punctures if bitten, stepped on, or swallowed.

🦴 Show your fur baby some extra love today! Pets are the real masters of unconditional love. 💞 Spoil them with a special treat, gift them a brand-new toy, or spend some extra quality time together lounging around 🛋️💙

Lakewood Pet Vet wishes a Happy Lunar New Year to all those who celebrate! 🧧🧨🐉

Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This event is celebrated by numerous different Asian cultures with various traditions, sometimes on different dates. Commonly known as the Spring Festival in China, Lunar New Year is about a sixteen-day celebration. 🏮

Commonly, family from multiple generations gather to enjoy a large dinner to enjoy delicious and lucky dishes, gift red envelopes (hóngbāo (红包) in Mandarin or lai see (利事) in Cantonese) with money as a symbol of good luck, light fireworks to ring in the new year that can symbolize warding off a legendary monster, and end the festivities with a Lantern Festival which can symbolize letting go of your past self as you enter the new year. 🧧🥮

Wishing you and your family success and good fortune this year of the Dragon! ✨🐉

Hershey has had a very rough start to life 💔 She was scheduled for euthanasia at just 4 months old last week.

This very healthy puppy had a very broken left hind leg; a compound fracture. With a very brave face, Hershey came to our treatment area with her leg dangling, bleeding. Her leg needed to be amputated. 🩻 The previous owner said Hershey was attacked by his other adult dog over a bone that was found while unsupervised. This incident, paired with the recent loss of his wife was overwhelming financially and emotionally; he thought euthanasia was the only option left for Hershey.

Kerry, our vet tech, selflessly took Hershey in as a foster and proceeded with her amputation surgery. After her successful amputation, Hershey is now resting and taking the time to heal, though if it was up to her, she'd already be running, jumping, and playing around! 🐕🎾

A lot of love has been poured into Hershey and her intense surgery/recovery. Kerry has a GoFundMe fundraiser (link in bio!) where you can donate and learn more about Hershey's life and surgery progress. Any amount will be a great help to cover Hershey's splints, bandage changes, surgery, aftercare, food, etc. 🫂🎁

Hershey's spirits are high, relishing every moment of affection and attention she receives. She's hoping to soon meet her forever family! 🏠 Please share and reach out to us if you or someone you know is interested in adopting sweet little Hershey! Hershey has A LOT of life and love to live and give. 🐶🍫❤️

Can you guess what Georgia swallowed? 👀🎀

If you guessed 20 hair ties, you’re correct! ✅

Poor Georgia started experiencing extreme discomfort around her abdomen, and she was brought in to us to be checked out.

X-rays we took confirmed Georgia had swallowed something...but it was hard to tell what the foreign body was! 🩻

We then decided to perform an endoscopy to take a look inside her stomach and remove the foreign body. She was fully put to sleep and positioned for the minimally invasive procedure.

An endoscope, fitted with a camera and tools, was slowly guided down the esophagus into Georgia’s stomach. When the multiple hair ties were found, the tools gripped them and were gently pulled out. 🥼

This is a perfect reminder to double check for common household items that pets love to get into! Common items include: hair ties (like in Georgia's case!) thread and sewing needles, tissue paper, food scraps, socks, household cleaners, cains, medications, and children's toys.

No matter how hard we try, pets are very sneaky and can still get into these items! Locking away common hazardous items and supervised play is very important for this reason, and we're glad we were able to help Georgia feel much better. ❤️

This holiday season, join us in the gift of giving by supporting Grandpaws Foundation mission of helping low-income seniors obtain pet food for their pets! 🐶🐱

Many of the seniors in our community have a heart full of gold and will do anything for their pets, just like you would! The issue many seniors run into is making difficult decisions to provide for themselves or for their pets when relying solely on social security or low pensions as their income. These pets are part of their families, sometimes their only family. ❤️

We will be having a food drive during the month of December to collect food donations for the foundation to support our community! 🫂

Any of the items listed below are encouraged donations: 🐾🎁

Dry Dog Food, Dry Cat Food, Canned Food, Dog Treats, Cat Treats, Dental Treats

Our front desk team will be collecting and placing your donation in our large donation box, and no appointment is needed to drop off your kind donations. 🎁

All the food and treats will go towards low-income seniors for their pet care needs and will make a HUGE difference to those in need!

Take a peek in our microscope! 👀🔬 Did you know these are probably on your face and eyelashes right now!? 😱

Demodex mites live in the hair follicles of almost all mammals, including humans! They are species-specific, meaning they can't be passed between dogs, cats, and humans. With a properly functioning immune system, these guys cause no harm. 🐾 ✅

With an immature immune system (like in puppies, kittens, or immunocompromised pets), these mites multiply quickly and easily. Clinical signs in pets include losing patches of fur, usually beginning around the face. In more extreme cases, hair loss can spread to the whole body and can sometimes cause extreme redness, irritation, and itchiness, resulting in clinical disease. This disease is called demodicosis, or demodectic mange. 🐕🐈

Treatment includes topical or oral medication, and in cases where demodectic mange causes secondary skin infections, treatment may require antibiotics or shampoo therapy. 💊🧼🫧

The great news is treatments are usually successful! In cases where a pet is immunocompromised, the mites nor the infection may respond well to treatment. Successful treatment may take a long time and may require regular skin scrapings to assess the progress of the treatment. 🔬
