, otherwise known as "Dry Eye" is a condition that most commonly affects middle-aged to older dogs. Simply, most of these patients do not have enough tears to lubricate and nourish the cornea. As a result, many dogs develop corneal scarring called hyperpigmentation that can be seen on examination. Corneal scarring often looks like a dark brown film covering the eyes. You can often see tiny blood vessels coursing across the cornea (neovascularization). Concerned about your dog (squinting, redness, discharge, etc.) - schedule an appointment - we are here to help!

At the Vet Vision Center we often get asked, "when should I get my pet's eyes checked? Pets should be examined by a veterinarian if you notice signs of eye discomfort (squinting or tearing), changes in eye color (redness or cloudiness) or changes in vision. Many common eye conditions can be successfully diagnosed and treated by your family veterinarian. However, some cases may benefit from a referral to a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist for further diagnostic testing, medical treatment, or surgery. Veterinary ophthalmologists work closely alongside your family vet to ensure your pet receives the best care. If you are concerned about your pet's eyes, contact your primary care veterinarian or the Vet Vision Center (https://www.vetvisioncenter.vet/appointment-request) at any time!

We often get the question..."How do you test a pet's vision?" Since pets cannot read eye charts and respond...veterinarians need to rely on other tests to assess vision. One such tool we use at the Vet Vision Center is a slit lamp. A slit-lamp is essentially a handheld microscope that is used to evaluate the front portion of the eye on a microscopic level. This instrument allows for optical sectioning of the eye in a similar fashion to what is possible with histopathology, or tissue sectioning of the globe.
