#TipsfromtheTrainerTuesday
Having an amazing recall for your dog is super important because it can prevent dangerous and life-threatening situations! Here are a couple tips for how to introduce recall training!
What you’ll need!
1. Get a 15ft or 20ft long line
2. Have tons of high value treats or toys on hand
3. A person and a pet
Tips:
1. Establish a word that will only be used for their recall (Ex: “HERE” or “COME”)
2. Make sure you have their attention in the beginning phases until they are ready for distractions before calling them!
3. Say the word from step 1 and then be the pups biggest cheerleader! You can clap your hands, make whistling noises, or wave treats around to make sure the pet sees them. Do positives acts in order to have the pup want to come towards you.
4. If they are not coming towards you, use the long line to help reel them in like a fish!
5. Be careful to not repeat your recall word more than once! We want the dog to learn how to come on the first call. If you repeat the command they will start to ignore you!
6. Reward heavily with treats, toys or attention once they get to you!
